Bike helmets are differnent to car helmets? Aside from some of the open wheeler helmets with small eye slots (to stop other cars poking your eyes out) can someone explain.

My Nav wears a Stilo and finds it heavy - would go peltor if to buy again. I have been wearing a Shoei Jet 101. glass open face and cost about $350.

Will maybe test full face for this year.

We wont be using HANS, because we would have to put the HANS bars in our roll cage - not this year.

Back a few years we had a deal with Nolan. They were sponsoring Alex Criville with an X-Lite. to E22 it was 1100 and something grams - trick, comfy, and lite. When Ron Angel got them tested for AS 1698(?), they required extra wire in the bucket which made them up near Arai, Shoei AGV etc.

I think you will find unless you import an fia approved european standard helmet, most of the AS helmets are similar in weight.

There's no way you can convince me a cheap crap helmet is as safe as a high quality one and neither is the fit or quality of the lining.

Putting aside the issue of trim materials and comfort as thats very subjective. My mate worked for Standards Australia in the test lab for about 3 years back in the late 90s. From a safety aspect and their ability to absorb energy you would be amazed that whilst all conforming, their price does not accurately represent their performance.

The fact that some of the cheaper helmets are also heavier is a good point and a genuine concern in a big accident. But feel free not to believe me when i state that some cheaper helmets are 'safer' then more expensive helmets, including the very expensive helmets. They all pass the AS requirements, but dont think cheap means just passes and expensive means walks in.

For what its worth, i have a 2 dollar head :D

Also, the talk that i have heard about motorcyle helmets being excluded from car events has been a supp reg thing, just like some dont allow open face helmets. I know some objections about trail bike helmets is to do with the fact that they are more likely to have sustained damage from impact in a fall on dirt.

Mick,,,any helmet that is of the standard or higher and is un-damaged is all that you require as a driver. No scrutineer can knock you back.

Roy I don't doubt what your saying for one moment,,,but I'll stick with my choice of quality over cheap crap.

Oh and just for the record I don't have the biggest head around here,,,tests have proven that Duncan's head size surpasses mine by a long shot.

Neil.

I gave into peer pressure and got the current Bell RS3 and I know my head isn't worth that much. One question though, I got a medium size but will I need to get a bigger helmet once I think I am a super driver and my head grows?

So without starting a new topic, I've got a few track days coming up and rather than hiring a helmet I thought buy one.

So what I found out (from the dude at revoultion racegear) that for just general track days, hire karts, and test n tune days at willowbank etc a fiberglass helmet is fine.

What he was saying is to make sure #1 it has the aust standard (which yeah might be diff to cams approval, but not all tracks are cams) then the next thing he said to make sure it has is the Snells approval.

So from what you guys know, is that what I should be looking for? It was about $200, and a motorbike shop had something similar for $260ish mark.

I ride a bike well at least i did until a lady u-turned...OVER DOUBLE LINES... into me and flipped me over her bonnet. now i was lucky enough to have the cops a few cars back who saw everything and fined her on the spot but that's another story. ANYWAY the price i placed on my head wasn't an amazing amount but the helmet did it's job.

Make: KBC

Model: VR-1X

Paid: i think RRP is like 300 odd

now people said to me is that all you place on your head. after speaking to many people before i purchased it they said the main difference seems to be feel and weight etc. mine fitted perfectly with removable inserts. basically work out what you want it for. if you wont be wearing it for very long periods of time then it should be fine. my mate has a $1200 and it was nice but don't know if i would pay that much extra. basically you need to try all different types of brands as all will fit you differently.

that's my $2 worth looking at the length of that post lol.

best of luck mate.

    • Here's the chart for fuel pressure vs. current draw, assuming your base fuel pressure is 3 bar and you run like 0.5bar boost on WOT, you should only momentarily hit 9amps here and there. (Ignore my prev post, I cannot read a chart these days it seems)
    • Those comp test results are not hideous. Whether they are accurate or not (ie, when that comp tester says 140 psi, is the real pressure120, 140 or 160?) is unknown to us. The state of the battery used to crank it over is unknown, etc etc. Many people around here would say that the absolute values and the spread are perfectly fine to just add boost and keep going. I personally would be happier with a narrower spread than that, but even the diff between 125 and 145 is not terrible. That one cylinder at 125 though, has probably copped some damage relative to the others. You should inspect the valves seeing as you've got it open. Do you know how to measure installed ring gaps? That, and an inspection of the rings themselves, is how you will determine whether they need to be replaced. If you're not good to do these things, take the block and the pistons and rings to a shop that is, and ask them for the go/no-go on them. Do the bores need a hone at all? If so, you might well be justified in getting some different pistons in order to get away from the ring supply problem. Whether you're happy to spend a lot more money right now, on more gear, rather than less money, but an amount that looks stupid given that you will only get a handful of rings in exchange for that money, is for you to decide.

    • Ok so i would love some advice here please, i purchased an R33 a few months back and its had a few mods done to the engine, its an RB25det running a Master ECU, 1200cc injectors, bigger turbo, oil cooler, oil filter relocation kit, Spool H-beam rods, acl/ross pistons. When i removed the motor from the vehicle (as its getting a respray) i thought i would compression test it and these are the following results. Cylinder 1-145psi, Cylinder 2-143psi, Cylinder 3-125psi, Cylinder 4-145psi, Cylinder 5-140psi, Cylinder 6-135psi this test was done with the motor on the ground and powering up the starter motor. I dropped the sump and found broken oil squirters on cylinder 3,5 and 6. I was told my rings are probably worn so i stripped the motor completely to get a new set of rings for it. The trouble is no one has these rings anywhere and they have to be custom made by Ross over in the states and will cost about $600+$200 delivery. My question is how can i tell if my rings are at fault and if they are still ok and is this price ok for a set of rings?
