Hi to all i am new to the forum and own a R32 gtr and have heard lots of different advice from various performance mechanics in the know about how strong a gtr box is.

I am putting a plea out to all the real experienced owners of angry skylines to please give me some real life advice as to what sort of power they are running through these gearboxes and what they can handle if driven with some sort of decency.

My car is running a 12.4sec quarter mile and i was told that from here on any lower times with these boxes is just luck of the draw, i have a heavy duty organic clutch and consider myself a decent driver not a rev dumper of big power as some might do.

Can these boxes hold out comfortable in the mid to low elevens which is the target i am happy to achieve and will this gearbox be up to the task, any experienced advice will be most appreciated thanks to all that read and pass on any info for me.

Cheers Dave.

Hey,

I've got an R32 GTR with 270 4wkw putting it to the ground through 255 tyres on all corners and my box is holding up fine, I think that sort of power is good for an 11 pass...not sure as I havent put her down the strip yet. Putting a high quality oil like redline in your box might help prolong wear and smoothen the shifts a bit and like you said, don't do any high rev dumps.

Cheers!

On standard cermamic turbos,1 bar making 260rwkw . I have done over 200 11sec passes...mostly all in the 11.5-11.6 range. That launching the car hard on powerfc pro launch control set at 7200rpm. Used redline shockproof oil (red) and os tripple plate clutch.Didnt have one problem with the box, for 2years...drove it on the street/drag. Still in the car now, but hasnt run in 5years..mock up box for my drag car.

The only thing that is an issue in my r32 GTR box is when I shift from 5th down to 4th it will crunch/grind a little. Car is basically stock atm 208rwkw but will be pushing 300+ next week so if she blows Ill let you no. :nyaanyaa:

Thanks guys for all your replys, it is good to know that with low elevens my quarter mile target i should be ok with the standard box, has any one else achieved an awesome quarter mile time through the factory gearbox that would be an interesting bit of knowledge to obtain to see what limits some people have been able to go with the factory box.

Cheers,

Dave.

Holy Cow really 10 sec GTRs on standard boxes thats incredible dont mean not to believe but any one who belongs to the forum who has done this with the standard box please stand up and tell us haha.

My mate did a 10sec pass in mine standard gtr box. Most 10sec gtrs here in NZ are running factory gtr boxs. Most of them arnt street legal because of import laws.

i didnt really believe it either.. ive heard and read about.. dont actually know anyone who runs 10s with stock box.. but if u do.. damn impressive.. i think durability is all about how u launch and shift.. if arent too hard on the box then it should last... i guess

Generally when you get over 300-330rwkw then things start to stress a bit more than the gearbox sometimes is willing to take on.

Also original condition of the box does play a fair part in it aswell.

Stock turbo'd GTR's tend to never have issues.

Its once you head towards 340/360rwkw and thumping launches with some traction that things tend to no be so happy, and 3rd gear is common

    • Put a fuel pressure gauge on it. Replace the turbos. Probably completely separate issues.
    • What copper washer do you guys use on the bleeder bolts? The existing one I have I had no idea where to find it in a local store, I did buy some online but that are only 1mm thick whereas my old one is 2mm+ thick and when I put the new washer out and squeeze the top radiator hose I can hear a bit of air but not with the old one. Does this matter? The new one doesn't leak, but the inner diameter is a bit loose whereas the old one threads on the bolt.
    • Howdy all, after being out a few weeks ago on a spirited drive in my GTR I have 2 issues that oddly have appeared at the same time. Whilst accelerating quickly through the gears all of a sudden i’ve lost power at the top of third gear (below redline around 6000rpm) for no obvious reason.    From that point onwards the car has been running rich on idle, won’t really rev under load without a ton of black smoke and the odd backfire, and dying as a pull up to a set of lights unless I keep the revs up around 1500rpm. In addition when shutting down the car that same night (I was 10 minutes from home) I noticed one of the turbos was significantly noisy on wind down when shutting off the engine. After letting the car cool down overnight it starts up fine, although once it gets to temp the revs start to creep up and down, the exhaust is darker than it should be and it also sounds like it’s running rich (fat note) I’ve put a new set of plugs in it - no change, the old plugs all seemed OK with two of them being somewhat richer/fueled up than the other 3 with 1 being borderline. I’ve smoked tested the intake system via the front of the Turbos, found a split vacuum hose going to the factory boost gauge sender, which I have since replaced.  Also found another leak on the gasket coming off the rear turbo outlet, have also replaced this. After fixing both of these leaks - still have the running rich issue. I’ve also tried another pair of AFM’s - no change here After pulling off the front turbo intake pipes, there is obvious shaft play in the front turbo, which now hisses loudly on light revvs although I can’t see why this would make the car run funny even under idle. I’m curious to know why it’s running rich before I potentially replace/rebuild turbos. The car is completely stock <50,000kms  other than an exhaust. Oil and coolant are all clear. I haven’t bothered with coil packs as it looks like they won’t be the issue due to condition of the plugs. Any help appreciated as I cry myself to sleep!
    • No probs at all. I used to love trying to dig up obscure info for those in need where possible going back 20+ years on SAU.  I did have another look and couldn't come up with any closer match. I'm leaning towards those skirts in your first pic are custom fitments, cut down/extended or from another car entirely and modded to fit an R34 sedan. I would've thought someone in Japan had them and taken a photo at some stage over the last 2 decades but there's nothing. Someone out there must know surely.
