I thought the latest on HFCS was that it's pretty much the same difference as any other sugar, and the 'sugars are evil thing' was also overblown hyperbole

Whilst I think the media likes to jump on certain band wagons without much thought ("fats make you fat"), they're throwing out the baby with the water.

Inherently, everything can be bad, provided the dose is sufficient. Water is required to sustain life... drink 10 litres in one go; just make sure to leave a note for the funeral.

The issue with HFCS, is that it is a highly refined by-product. It's cheap to produce, as the chemicals used to derive the substance are also cheap. Because it is basically entirely pure refined fructose, your liver processes it quite differently, to say, fructose from an apple. This can lead to fatty liver disease.

Now, in regards to "the dose is the poison" line of thinking, we can see some silver lining. Here in Australia, HFCS is not anywhere near as prevalent in the food industry due to our sweetening coming from more natural sources, and the fact that we don't have a corn-growing industry with a supply which FAR outweighs the demand. This is why in the USA for example, HFCS is in everything. And here in lies the problem for markets such as the US: By consuming excess amounts of HFCS, you have a greater chance of reaching toxic levels quicker.

The off shoot to this, is that 1 gram of HFCS, is a hell of a lot worse than 1 gram of raw sugar. The threshold for what your body can handle is much lower with HFCS. So you can see why replacing 40 grams of sugar in a bottle of coke to 40+ grams of HFCS can lead to drastic problems. And, from what I have read and understand, unlike artificial sweeteners (which have a greater magnitude of perceived sweetness), HFCS has the same if not lower magnitude than regular sugar. So, aside from what the general consensus is, I still firmly believe that HFCS is a boat load worse than standard sugar.

You see it every where in the food industry.. Soon as something starts becoming more refined and more refined... it steadily gets worse. Think olive oil. The difference in nutritional quality between refined and cold pressed extra virgin is surprisingly high!

But, once again, it all comes down to how much is consumed. Personally, I freaking LOVE KFC chicken. Regardless of the fact that it's loaded with trans fat (which are clinically proven to be toxic to the human body), I know that by only having it every now and then, I can mitigate/lessen the effects it produces. The same can be said of those who consume HFCS.

If you're interested in some reads, I'm pretty sure I've got some pages saved that I can share :)

Need to lose 1.5kg to get into the under 80kg class at work.

I've got to next Thursday otherwise I'll be in the over 80kg class competing against 120 kg guys.

After a warm up I've got 1hr to my best 4 reps on deads, squats, bench and military press.

Should be fun.

I like to squat, but I dont think ill ever be one of those guys that squat super heavy weights. I tried squat in an oly shoe during the week and I like it. Feel a little more stable and its easier to hit legal depth. Hopefully it translates into strength gains after a while.

Might also look at getting a belt soon I think.

got told tonight that someone has slipped on some chalk dust at the gym and hurt themselves, so I can no longer use it, going to see the manager about using liquid chalk tomorrow, but failing that I guess I'll have to become home gym master race. FML

yeah I reckon it's a bullshit pretense to ban it - the floor of the weights room is smooth rubber matting, but even so.

The only places I've ever seen it accumulate are next to the power rack pins, at the head of the benches and right next to the leg of the curl rack.

If they maintained the gym properly, and vacuumed that area, it wouldn't be an issue

I agree - I think the actual story is that someone is either feeding them a line, or they're lying so that they don't have to clean it up. If they don't allow me to at least try liquid chalk, I'll be cancelling my membership.

For anyone who buys whey from BN...

About a month ago they switched suppliers for their whey concentrate. The verdict? It's fkin awesome. Mixes much better; just well as the WPI now and no waiting for the foam to settle like with the previous WPC. Taste is a bit different, not better not worse (at least for the chocolate flavor). Definitely recommend it over WPI for the $50 saving.

Only weird thing is they sent me 10 x 1kg packs instead of 2 x 5kg. Each one has a scoop in it too lol

Really liking the BN website right now. They have a no bullshit supplements guide on there that is very transparent with regard to selling you supps; tells you which ones are supported by studies, which ones aren't, which will benefit a particular individual and which of their own products someone would be wasting their money on. Complete opposite of the GNC approach.

I think they do the 1kg bags now so you can get different flavours but still have the same overall price. Not a bad idea really.

The wpi foams a little with thw current supplier but it settles super quick. They definitely are a good supp supplier and I doubt ill ever switch from them.

    • Yea - I mean I've seen my fuel pump which is decades old and uh, while I'm not saying this with real knowledge... but I sure get the ick at using anything in the fuel system that produced the state of that pump. Many years ago I went through multiple pumps (and strainers) before I dropped the tank to clean it out with extreme violence. I'm talking the car would do maybe 50km before coming to a halt, which resulted in me cleaning out the filter with some brake cleaner and going on my way. None of my stuff ever looked like what came out of your fuel tank. I don't think I'd be happy with it unless every single component was replaced (or at least checked/cleaned/confirmed to be clean here).
    • I'm not going to recommend an EBC pad. I don't like them. Just about anything else would suit me better. I've been using Intima pads for a while now.
    • Agreed, and in particular the earth strap that should go from the subframe to the chassis but it often broken or left off. There is a section in the R32 workshop manual you can follow for troubleshooting if you don't see anything suspicious, and depending where you are (there is no location on your user profile) you should be able to get your hands on a second hand replacement unit still if needed
    • Yeah they mention as a R34 for 2.5 Turbo...but then again thos "small" were also for R34 by that different site. But i look into it and that 310mm EBC is for R34 GTT. And by those you linked the specs are the same 🙂    EDIT: I found these on one site here: DBA 4000 series T3 DBA42304S They are 310mm...and it says are for R34GTT...are there good? EDIT2: ok they have pads too.  What "color" should i get for street use? I dont want/need some noisy ones...(and if they are not that dusty that is good too)
