been thinking about oil cooler ( among lots of other mods ) . What are the good oil cooler kits for r33 gts -t . just for light track days, off street drag. would not want to pay more than $400 for whole kit including plate, connections and braided hoses ( 10 - 15 layers ) any suggestions. thanks.gif

Save yourself the headache and go get a Permacool relocation kit & thermostat & and quality B&M core. Same price-"ish" but 300% the quality!

on your budget I'd be looking at a second hand trust kit. you might score one for $400 but may need to spend another $100 as they are usually around $500 or so second hand. excellent kits. I've used probably half a dozen of them now on my own cars.

You should never ever have to teflon tape oil cooler fittings. If the fittings were good enough quality you dont need them.

Ask any decent fitting company, Earls, Aeroquip, Mocal.. if you ask the question they yell back at you.. NO! Keep that AWAY from oil systems. lol.

Im assuming its the bsp/jic/npt end of the fittings that leak, as thread tape wont fix the an fittings, as its not the thread that seals. Sure earls may say not to use teflon tape, but they sell the liquid equivalent. It is actually better to use a sealant on tapered thread fittings, as they arent meant to be excessively tightenedor damage to the female union can result.

i dont use the o ring fittings. well i modify them. they are a pain in the ass. best thing to do is to put the fitting in the lathe and machine off the o ring lips and use a copper washer with locktie. never had any leaks after.

added bonus is when you want to undo them,just the hose end undoes and not the whole fitting.

thread tape is a big no no. ive seen so many bb turbos fail from a stray piece of thead tape blocking the oil feed in the turbo..

if it is the kind that just squashes a o ring with no recess for it then just use a washer..

also you should check that the fittings that screw into the filter/adapter block dont go i to far and restrict the oil flow. i always have to take 3-4mm off the total length of the thread.

I picked mine off eBay, but American Autos have it, eBay has it new, a few sponsors on Nissan Silvia have them as well. They're great value and you know it won't leak. Just one problem, they don't have holes fit sensors.

Have you guys ever tried the hydraulic washers with a rubber o-ring inbuilt?

I had a issue with a leaking fitting with a copper washer and used one of these and it fixed the problem straight away :)

Don't know how true it is but when I asked the guy at the hydraulics joint what pressure they were rated at he said the ally fitting I had would break before the washer seal!

I got one of the light weight 19 row blue oil cooler kits, and oil keeps leaking from it.

I have tried to replace the o rings with some good quality wurth ones which made no difference.

I then got hold of some locktight paste stuff (hydrolic thread sealant) which is suppossed to hold 1000psi once cured AND IT STILL LEAKS.

Does anyone have any ideas on how i can stop this from leaking? should i just use thread tape?

Its leaking on the fittings that screw onto the sandwitch plate on the block.

Has anyone had this issue before? how did you fix it.

I hate oil leaks more then anything else, leaking 300v chrono is driving me INSANE!!!!

i just throw the sandwich plates away and use a decent earls one with tapered thread AN fitting..... no leaks, no friggin around with thread tape which can fray and dislodge... ultimately block an oil gallery.

I fitted a greddy cooler kit to an s13 yesturday and it leaked from the plug that holds the thermostat. it was missing an o-ring, so much for buying a jap brand cooler to avoid problems!

    • Hi, SteveL Thank you very much for your reply, you seem to be the only person on the net who has come up with a definitive answer for which I am grateful. The "Leak" was more by way of wet bubbles when the pedal was depressed hard by a buddy while trying to gey a decent pedal when bleeding the system having fitted the rebuilt BM50 back in the car, which now makes perfect sense. A bit of a shame having just rebuilt my BM50, I did not touch the proportioning valve side of things, the BM50 was leaking from the primary piston seal and fluid was running down the the Brake booster hence the need to rebuild, I had never noticed any fluid leaking from that hole previously it only started when I refitted it to the car. The brake lines in the photo are "Kunifer" which is a Copper/Nickel alloy brake pipe, but are only the ones I use to bench bleed Master cylinders, they are perfectly legal to use on vehicles here in the UK, however the lines on the car are PVF coated steel. Thanks again for clearing this up for me, a purchase of a new BMC appears to be on the cards, I have been looking at various options in case my BM50 was not repairable and have looked at the HFM BM57 which I understand is manufactured in Australia.  
    • Well the install is officially done. Filled with fluid and bled it today, but didn't get a chance to take it on a test drive. I'll throw some final pics of the lines and whatnot but you can definitely install a DMAX rack in an R33 with pretty minor mods. I think the only other thing I had to do that isn't documented here is grind a bit of the larger banjo fitting to get it to clear since the banjos are grouped much tighter on the DMAX rack. Also the dust boots from a R33 do not fit either fyi, so if you end up doing this install for whatever reason you'll need to grab those too. One caveat with buying the S15 dust boots however is that the clamps are too small to fit on the R33 inner tie rod since they're much thicker so keep the old clamps around. The boots also twist a bit when adjusting toe but it's not a big deal. No issues or leaks so far, steering feels good and it looks like there's a bit more lock now than I had before. Getting an alignment on Saturday so I'll see how it feels then but seems like it'll be good to go       
    • I don't get in here much anymore but I can help you with this.   The hole is a vent (air relief) for the brake proportioning valve, which is built into the master cylinder.    The bad news is that if brake fluid is leaking from that hole then it's getting past the proportioning valve seals.   The really bad news is that no spare parts are available for the proportioning valve either from Nissan or after market.     It's a bit of a PITA getting the proportioning valve out of the master cylinder body anyway but, fortunately, leaks from that area are rare in my experience. BTW, if those are copper (as such) brake lines you should get rid of them.    Bundy (steel) tube is a far better choice (and legal  in Australia - if that's where you are).
