5.5L of Nulon 10w40 fully synth shit went in. ~4L comes out. After 4000km. What shit. Last oil I used was 8100 5w40, and the entire 5L came back out when I dropped it. This oil breaks down and burns very easily, won't be using it again after I get through what I put back in (like I said previously, got 10L cheap so couldn't turn it down). It also stank a bit more than it should.

Will be keen to try out the 8100 10w40 stuff next.

wow that's an awful lot to burn and you definitely don't normally burn oil?

Definitely not. Never noticed it out the exhaust (on or off boost), have fark all blowby (absolutely nothing came out of the catch can) and as I said with the previous oil drop, the whole 5L came out whereas this one was a lot less :(

Might honestly just be the oil, which wouldn't bother me too much. Would rather the oil be ghey than have bigger problems.

Been using Nulon 10W-40 since I bought the car 2 years ago with no probs....serviced roughly every 5000km +/- few hundred Ks.

However, I recently switched to Motul X-Max 10W-40 cos its only like $7 extra from Autobarn (for 5 litres) compared to the Nulon (6 litres worth).

I haven't noticed any difference apart from peace of mind knowing that the stuff in the car is "a quality brand" and is guaranteed to be 100% synthetic POA/ester based

holy degrease batman, put some of the $15 gulf western into my new corolla daily

i haven't even put 2 tanks through it and its gone black :)

i'm pretty impressed with it, i've been wanting a car of my own to try it on for ages

haha, I'm hoping that might have been why my shithouse Nulon went black after 4000km - did a better cleaning job than 8100.

Sadly, I think I'm wrong.

So this $15 GW business, might do my noisy lifter some favours if I could be arsed changing the oil twice in a fortnight

i think all the gw oils are good at degreasing is what i was trying to say

i'd go the synx 3000 for a skyline (20w50 is too thick for me)

Hey Guys,

So what do you think about Mobil 1 Gold??? I tried castrol edge, and dropped it after a few hundred k's cause the car felt sluggish, as soon as the Mobil went in the car started sweetly and the difference seems obvious, event the turbo sounded more crisp...

Stays the same clear gold right upto the next oil change and never goes down on the stick...Does this mean its a good oil or are my oil rings just sealing off really well??

detergents aren't working if the oil doesn't come out black right?

yes and no. Black oil doesn't always mean detergents are working....can also mean burnt oil. I'd also say that just because the oil comes out a bit lighter colour, doesn't necessarily mean that detergents aren't working. Might just mean it was nice n clean inside and you didn't get the oil hot enough to gunk up any further.

That's correct, there are a lot of ways to read the colour of an oil. Logic needs to be applied.

A guy I used to know put some oil in his car before getting dyno tuned...his tuner checked the oil afterwards, found it was black and incorrectly assumed it was a shitty oil. Couple of problems here:

- Dyno tuning and other intensive engine work (racetracks etc.) can burn an oil no matter how good it is. This is important to keep track of, as extreme driving behaviour can shorten appropriate service intervals in street cars.

- Previous oil may not have had as much detergent in it, leaving plenty of build up for the new oil to drain out.

detergents aren't working if the oil doesn't come out black right?

As the other's said, if after 5-10k the oil comes out golden it has lasted well but not cleaned the engine at all, if it comes out black it has either broken down, cleaned well, or both (I'd guess usually both). You can gt some idea by smell bit it's a bit subjective, though you do know if it smells burnt to all hell it's broken down badly.

You still using sougi birds? What will be your choice when your stockpile runs out? I'd be looking towards xcess or xmax. Is that synx 3000 stuff detergent heavy? Maybe that's the cheaper way to go these days.

Yeah I'm still on Sougi...I have a personal stash leftover, but I'll probably make the switch to Syn-X after that...only because I can use it in my car for free haha. I have thousands of litres of it. But it is a decent oil nonetheless. If I wasn't a distributor I'd probably consider Motul too.

for best all round performance on the street 8100 xcess is the shit imo.. I use 5-40,

Mobil one or gold is decent enough too so is penrite syn.

I didnt like castrol

Burnt oil will be black and thin/runny, if your oil drains out fast it is probably burnt or just not good oil..Good oil should be darker than when you put it in of course, but it shouldn't be black unless your engine is tired and it should drain slow towards the end.

i want to know has anyone tried Fuchs oils and what are they like, can get 20l drums of full synthetic for about 150$ just want to use it in my work ute mainly

    • Apologies for the long post, but needed somewhere to lay out the entire timeline of events and actions taken:   I've got an 89 GTR with a R34 RB in it. It's been running great all year, driven probably 500KM in the last month. It's not my daily driver, just a weekend fun car.    Build info: R34 RB26 - HKS 2.7 stroker kit, HKS adjustable cam gears, HKS turbo upgrades, Trust intercooler, R34 factory DENSO 440cc injectors, JUN chipped/tuned R32 ECU. All of this work was performed in Japan back in 2019.    Thursday 10/2/25 - It's a nice day and decided I'll drive it to work, I start it up in the garage and I notice it took a few extra cranks and sounded a bit funny. I figure maybe it was just because it was a pretty chilly morning. I pull it out into the driveway to warm up a bit before leaving. As I leave the driveway, it feels very off and sounds like a misfire. I pull it back in the garage to deal with after work and take the daily to work. I was able to diagnose it as a cylinder 5 misfire with the old spark plug test (unplugging each plug until a sound change with the engine running). I take off the whole ignition system, ignitor, plugs, spark. *Important note, it is still on the R32 ignition system with the separate ignitor system. I test each system with a multi-meter and nothing presents as a smoking gun. I put it all back together and it starts up no issue. I go ahead and order the PRP R35 ignition conversion kit. It should arrive today (10/13/25)   Friday 10/3/25 - Another nice day, car starts up great and drives great all day. Very pleased that everything seems to be OK   Sunday 10/5/25 - Decided I'll take it to play some golf, load up and drive to the course about 25 minutes away. Drives wonderful the whole way there, I pull in the parking lot and the engine completely comes to a stop. I do not recall if it sputtered at all, but just remember all of the sudden the engine was off. I roll it into a parking spot, try to crank it back on and nothing.  It'll crank and crank and not even try to start. End up getting it towed back to my house and push it up into the garage.    Items I have checked: Fuel in the tank Fuel Pump relay Fuel pump fuse  Spark Plugs & gap Coil packs Ignitor    I know the cylinders are getting fuel as the plugs smell like fuel after a start attempt. I tried spraying starter fluid into the manifold and cranking and not even a sputter.    I decided to do the live CAS test (removing the the CAS, ignition on and spinning the CAS stalk to see if the injectors pulse and spark is active). All of the injectors were pulsing and I have spark at the plug. The half-moon end of the CAS did seem very loose, I'm not sure how much play is supposed to be there, but it was more than I expected. There was no in/out play of the shaft, just the tip end that is pinned on had quite a bit of play.    CAS Play video   When I put the CAS back in, I stupidly did not re-time the engine. I know I need to do that tonight, however, I do not think it will start given it seemingly was not the issue. My plan is to do the PRP R35 coil kit and retime the engine at the same time.    I plan on ordering the Haltech Nexus Plug-in ECU once they are available again, but ideally would like to get this sorted before firing the parts cannon at it and potentially adding more variables.    Anything glaring that I am missing here, I'm a bit at a loss?
    • Get it on a dyno. Get something logging Consult. Run it up and find out what is causing it.
    • Looking for a plenum for rb25 de+t neo  Not looking to push much power maybe 300kw at the wheels, is there much difference in flow for Freddy “Greddy style” compared to original Greddy or options like Proflow or Otaku garage?    I won’t be porting the de Neo head for now as I think it’ll be fine 280-300rwkw but appreciate the help and any experiences anyone has between them and any advice. Thanks  Looking at this plenum for now below
