Hi all,

I am going to be purchasing a Skyline within a couple of weeks and i don't want to spend more than 10k. I had my sights on the R32 Gtst (Rb20det) as its the lighter option (compared to the R33) but then iv'e been seeing a few R33 gtst's (Rb25det) for around the same price. I wasn't a huge fan of the r33 purely for the look as i love the look of the r32. However my head is telling me to get the 33 as its got more power for pretty much the same price. This will be used as a daily driver and will be modified as I want to enter the drift seen (legally). I was wondering what your thoughts are and what some good options are etc. As i said my limit is around 10k. Any genuine suggestions are greatley appreciated as i'm new to this site :P

I dont see why you would want a daily as a drift car?

Why not go for cheap option of a stock 32 GTSt and buy a R31? Either one can be cheaply modified for basic drift and one can be a daily.

End up little more then 10K but not much at all and you have no worries of crashing or blowing anything on your daily at the track.

The 33 would definitely be the better buy. Newer car, bigger engine, better brakes, a little more weight, but it's got the extra power to pull it and larger brakes to stop it. They're the same price, why not?

You say you like the look of the 32 more, do you like it a LOT more to get it over the 33?

Best to check out a few cars. See which ones are in the best condition and decide on that.

Test drive both, then decide.

Well I want it to be a daily but i also wouldn't mind gettin into the drift scene with it and then eventually if it got to the point where it was a hassle as a daily then id consider turning into a track car but thats further down the track..yeah im aware it would be more than 10k but thats my limit for the purchase of the car..more than happy to throw dollars into it after that :P

Yeah i think thats the best thing to do (test drive both) so i no which one i like for sure as opposed to choosing just for looks...

thanks for you reply, yeah i have been checking a few r33's out that have caught my eye and my head says to get the 33 (less k's, bigger engine, more performance, newer car etc) so i think i will get the 33:)

r32 = great chassis, great handling, torqueless motor, loves the revs and sounds the best outta all the rb's

r33 = comfier chassis, better seats and interior, heavier, torquier motor probably cost more to run...

all depends what ur after :P

I've looked over your thread 3X

I can't add anything to the wise advice above, except for the following...

i) it seems you're new to Skylines (according to your thread) so take someone with you who isn't... No use getting gushy and emotional at the inspection and test drive; so if your mate (with engineering experience) can do his/her work with a cool head, you can go about looking for rust, oil seepage, electrics, sludge, prior damage etc.

And that's even before you turn the key!!

ii) whilst your seat and wheel tell you 100s of messages as you drive, have a look at the R33 whilst you're in the R32. And have a look at the R32 whilst you're in the R33. What do you feel?

Sure I know what I'd buy - but I ain't telling you just yet. Come back after your inspection and good luck. To compliment you, you're on the right track...

So persevere. You might get the right car at the right time!!

I do agree with Bumblebee, the 32 chassis does feel somewhat stiffer than the 33...im not just saying this from a biased perspective-i have driven both 33's and 32's with a range of suspension setups and you do notice the 33 is somewhat saggier if only just a bit. This could be more of a feedback from the lever geometry concerning the the control arms, however im just giving the general feeling i experienced.

As for picking your car, sit in both and find out which is a better place to be. Which would you be more happy to be stuck in a traffic jam in? At the end of the day its up to you, chose the car which pleases your taste more.

go the r32, alot easier n cheeper to drift, then one day put a rb25det in it or bigger :D

cheers dude, funnily enough, i have been thinking that exact same thing (putting the rb25) in the r32..i think that is what im going to do..have been discussing with mates over here (Auckland) and got alot of good advice from them as everyones import crazy here as cars are "cheap as chups" lol :D was thinkin maybe even rb26 down the track too...either way theres just something about the r32 that i cant say no to :woot:

    • Even more fun, leave all the ADAS stuff plugged in, but in different locations, hopefully avoid any codes!   And honestly, all these new cars with their weird electronics. Pull all the electronics out Duncan, and just shove an aftermarket ECU and if needed a trans controller in, along with a PDM. Make it run basic but race car styled!
    • To follow up a question from earlier too since I had the front bar off again (fking!) This is what is between the bumper and the drivers side wheel And this is the navigator side, only one thing but its a biggy! So basically....no putting coolers in the wheel arches without a lot of moving other stuff. Assuming I move to properly race prepping this car I'll take that job on and see how the computers respond to removing a whole bunch of ADAS modules
    • So I prepped the car for another track day on Wednesday (will be interesting to see coolant temps post flushing out and the larger reservoir, with a forecast of 3-14 being 20o cooler than last time I took it out). Couple of things to mention; since I am just driving the car and not taking a support vehicle, I took the rear seats out and just loaded the back up Team Trackday style. Look at all that space! To cover off removing the rear seat....it is weird (note the hybrid is probably different because it wouldn't have folding rear seats) Basically, you remove the lower seat base, very similar to a r series but it is a clip that pulls forward to release the base rather than it being bolted down. Easy Then, you need to remove the side section of the rear seat on each side. There is a 14mm head nut at the bottom of the side piece, the it slides upwards off a hook at the top to release; you also need to unhook the seatbelt from the loop at the top. Then the centre piece is weird. You need to release/fold the seats forward with the tab in the boot on each side From there, there are 2,x12mm headed bolts holding the rear of each seat to the folding bracket, under the trim between the rear seat and the boot (4x christmas tree clips there, they suck). The seat is out but you can see where the bolts attach to the bracket
    • As discussed in the previous post, the bushes in the 110 needed replacing. I took this opportunity to replace the castor bushes, the front lower control arm, lower the car and get the alignment dialled in with new tyres. I took it down to Alignment Motorsports on the GC to get this work done and also get more out of the Shockworks as I felt like I wasn't getting the full use out of them.  To cut a very long story short, it ended up being the case the passenger side castor arm wouldn't accept the brand new bush as the sleeve had worn badly enough to the point you could push the new bush in by hand and completely through. Trying a pair of TRD bushes didn't fix the issue either (I had originally gone with Hardrace bushes). We needed to urgently source another castor arm, and thankfully this was sourced and the guys at the shop worked on my car until 7pm on a Saturday to get everything done. The car rides a lot nicer now with the suspension dialled in properly. Lowered the car a little as well to suit the lower profile front tyres, and just bring the car down generally. Eternally thankful for the guys down at the shop to get the car sorted, we both pulled big favours from our contacts to get it done on the Saturday.  Also plugged in the new Stedi foglights into the S15, and even from a quick test in the garage I'm keen to see how they look out on the road. I had some concerns about the length of the LED body and whether it'd fit in the foglight housing but it's fine.  I've got a small window coming up next month where I'll likely get a little paint work done on the 110 to remove the rear wing, add a boot wing and roof wing, get the side skirt fixed up and colour match the little panel on the tail lights so that I can install some badges that I've kept in storage. I'm also tempted to put in a new pair of headlights on the 110.  Until then, here's some more pictures from Easter this year. 
    • I would put a fuel pressure gauge between the filter and the fuel rail, see if it's maintaining good fuel pressure at idle going up to the point when it stalls. Do you see any strange behavior in commanded fuel leading up to the point when it stalls? You might have to start going through the service manual and doing a long list of sensor tests if it's not the fuel system for whatever reason.
