I have been hunting UK car forums and classified for months now looking for what it is a basic fun car that will give me low key transport whilst in UK and double up as a track car. I keep coming back to E36 M3 BMWs

They are common, cheap and plenty with decent mods....and i figure practical enough. This is a typical example of what you can get

Anyone have any idea how decent the things are to be punted at speed

Yeh has to be rwd and reliable for the flogging its going to cop. I buy it, my mate uses it and garages it. When me or any other friends are in town its going to be our Snetterton, Brands Hatch, Oulton Park, Spa, Magny Cours etc car. So std and reliable and still fun to punt is what is required. There is a chance that it may even make it all the way to the place in Germany for some communal love :P

I was considering an E36 M3 as a daily before I bought the clubbie, but I couldn't afford one with low k's on it, and it wasn;t very practical. I love them, but I know a few people think they're quite front heavy...

E36 is hard to go past. Bolt on front brake upgrade, and if she's a fit one, it'll be all rosy :P

I've driven them, and reckon they're a good thing considering the daily livability.

To allay your "leg out of bed" fears... maybe some kind of aftermarket rev limiter should be on the cards? What do you reckon Bam Bam limiter guy?

Good choice and hard to go by for coin like that :P

Great handling car and, in factory form, fairly neutral from a balance point of view (easy to control the oversteer). Bad points include the fact that if they are abused like the way you treat the gtst :) they will break things and parts stamped with the BMW logo aren't cheap :P

Come on mate give SMAUG some credit - he's done a LOT more than just that.

He's blown the engine, gearbox (x2), clutch plates, front diff, rear diff, a turbo, 2 rear shocks and a tyre on the track (not all at once thank god :P )

if you could blow 2 gearboxs at once then i would give you gtr drivers so much credit.

ooo what about this M5 - and you can comfortable put the irish birds in the back :)

Old Porkas would be the sort of thing i bring home...not buy as a track car to thrash as they are not that quick, hopeless in the suspension dept and expensive for parts. E36 is good in that i can throw some meaty 16" semis in the boot for hammering around on,

The budget is about 6k max. Anymore and i risk doing too much damage to a decent enough car. I am buying a Cossie while i am there to brign back as a private import, and really if i am going to spend more then 6k then i am better of jsut repairing the stuff that breaks on teh Cossie at the track

    • Yeah I also looked at Plazmaman, but, it ended up alot  cheaper getting black ones through EFI when you also added in the delivery cost
    • Nice shot! They look super clean. The roof rack delete on the black one is interesting. Would like to see more pictures from different angles. It's subtle but could make quite a difference to how the car looks in profile.
