My car has been broken into & stripped while at the mechanics!!

Recommended Posts

Recently I had a full re-spray done to my car and in the process I fitted a GTR bonnet. Anyway there was still some suspension work to be done so I dropped the car off Monday morning back to the place (in Sunshine) for work to be completed.

As it turns out the car was left outside in their yard at the back and it has been broken into. Gone is the GTR bonnet, the GTR bonnet latch and they even took the aftermarket positive terminal on the battery!

It seems they knew exactly what they wanted and knew they needed the latch as well.

Not very happy at the moment as its cost me a lot of $ so far and I have been without the car for a long time which is now going to drag on for even longer :)

shivam faaaa , not that anything but that my heart stopped when i saw the post. what in the are these guys doing leaving cars outside?!!! sorry to hear man , real sorry to hear as you know why.:P:)

Hey? Why's the mechanic liable if your car was broken into on the street? Does that mean you could sue your brother if the car was parked outside his house while you were on holidays?

I know it sucks, but I would have thought you will have to claim on ur insurance

It says it was left out the back of thier yard.

Man I'm sorry to hear that. If it's on thier propery surley ther is some duty of care, get it checked out. I had my old 33 at a panel shop and they pushed the thing in and out of the shop EVERY night becasue they were woried about the wheels so I'd be looking at the shop if I were you. My 2c.

Oh FARK man, i'm feelin really bad for you! :P All that hard work and waiting, especially when everything came out so good.

The mechanic is definately liable, as the car was kept in his care overnight, and should have insurance to cover such problems. Definately sounds suspect, it would be pretty dificult getting a bonnet over the fence, i would consider another mechanic once car is fixed again.

Why would you allow him to store your car outside?

At my mechanic it is stored inside, factory is alarmed and he has anti-ram post infront of the entrance. When he is tight for room he puts a car on the hoist and parks another one under it.

Look for signs of robbery. ie: Hole in fence, wires bent on top of fence, etc. See if you can determine wether it was an inside job.

Take legal action if he refuses responsability, first contact Victorian consumer affairs on 1300 558 181.

GOOD LUCK, and really hope it works out in your favour.

sounds like an order for a GTST if u ask me... they took the latch and the bonnet... some ones had a bingle or someone is turning their GTST into a GTR look a like... and no i dont know anyone in scumshine.

thanks guys. This is (next to our whole cars getting stolen) one of our worst nightmares.

SKYLINEGTR- yeh man I know, I know. After all the trouble we went through.

Nark - yeh I had that thought as well. Seems like it was stolen to order.

Al - I dunno if i'll see you this weekend might have to wait till Wed (pay day) till I sort this out.

OK just got back from the mechanics again & the story so far is that he is trying to get replacement parts & will pay for everything. I wrote up an agreement which says this to the letter and he has signed it and it has been witnessed by a 3rd party.

Only problem is that it seems near impossible to find a GTR bonnet and the latch.

    • Am I correct in assuming that the R35's are getting the classic skyline haircut off the odometer?  Quick search on carsales, there are 33 08 and 09 GTR's for sale, only 2 of them have more then 100,000km's on them (116,075 and 110,000 respectively).  And somehow there are about 25 for sale with around 60,000kms? Looks like the classic skyline haircut to me =/
    • @Stringycheese  Have you only gone to the one blue slip workshop?  There will be a heap of them where ever you live, good odds that the next place you go to will pass the car.  Unfortunately (or fortunately?) every blue slip / engineering workshop will be different and will be happy passing or failing different things - despite working from the same set of rules. It's kinda like 2 lawyers arguing over a piece of legislation, each saying their interpretation is correct. Might seem strange that this happens when it comes to getting a modified car passed, but this is very much a thing. A big part of the game is finding an engineer / workshop that is on the same page as you.
    • Bah. I daily mine. ~60km per work day, 10-12 thousand km per year. What's the point of having a dirty old Datto and leaving it in the shed. It needs to be driven and enjoyed while the govco allows us to do so. It will only be a few years before we're forbidden to even start up internal combustion engines.
    • Judging by that spring perch and the normal looking spring on it - not a coilover. Well.... it is a coilover, just a stock format coilover, rather than what everyone calls a coilover.
    • Yes it is. We get stock from Nismo directly. I'm happy to take photos/video of it as proof before I ship it with timestamps or whathaveyou.
