I've had the sleeper before. 1984 Nissan Bluebird TRX, stock white with factory bodykit and alloys.

But it had a 195rwkw race prepped CA18DET with forgies, MicroTech, black FMIC behind the grill, Garrett T04 ball bearing and 3" mufflered exhaust. Was good enough to 12's in street trim but looked just like any other Bluebird on the road.

Miss that car.

sorry just had to and see below to see my reson.

1.fully built rb30dett (upgraded twins 800+hp) + datsun 110 1200

reson rwd and light

2. 460 cube v8 (yes it will fit if they fit small blocks in them why not a big block) if fit then twin turboes and efi setup + 1970's escort coupe (not rs2000 or 1800).

3.26btt (as in mad mikes rx7) + mx5

please i may seem crazy to you but i don't care what you say about that.

toyota aristo 2jz standard so no dicking around with costly engine conversions, that way you can spend that money on turbo, fuel pump, new injectors and a free flowing exhaust easy 400 horsepower with known toyota reliability and if their not into jap cars all they'll see is another a to b toyota but you'll know better

Aristos are my ultimate sleeper, bit on the heavy side though, but pretty lux in side as a tradeoff :(

Only thing I like to add would be some kind of RWD or AWD conversion (400kw+ on FWD?! :P) and I would change that crappy looking front bar & put the stock one back on.

Also the car is automatic so you can use it for all your daily traffic jam routines fairly easily :happy:

Merc 300e with any RB/LS/JZ motor. Keep it auto. Rip fat skids.

and being a merc, the chassis, gearbox, diff will take 11ty billion kW and not break!

those things rip pretty good skids with the stock motor lol

there are 2 simple rules i would stick to when making a sleeper, no matter what the car.

1: keep it looking as stock as possible. if possible get the biggest factory wheel and put the best tyre on it you can so you don't have to make it stand out by having big wheels. also if need be put base model bumpers, etc on it to hide it even more.

2: mufflers and lots of them also use a dummy exhaust tip if you can. if you can use mufflers to hide some lumpy engine then it adds to the sleeper aspect. if you roll up next to a shitbox at the lights and you can hear a lumpy v8 with twin 3" exhausts that you can hear from 50m away even though it's just idling then it gives it away. if you roll up to the lights next to some factory poo brown datsun with a tissue box and quilted blanket on the parcelshelf sitting on stock steel rims with chrome hubcaps only to have it leave you for dead as you take off a little bit spiritedly then you are going to be shocked.

mechanic mate of mine had a 1977 poo brown galant wagon. stock as the day it left the showroom. he was planing on putting the sr20 out of his sigma into it and leave it stock, including the roof racks, beaded seat cover, etc. this idea ended after he put the 15" wheels off the sigma one day at work. drove 2km home and pulled them straight off. said he'd nearly died about 10 times on the way home (and this was with the stock 1.6L or whatever they were and it was auto) and there was no way he would want to drive it with over 200hp.

funny story though, my mate is 30, little bit scruffy (since he's a mechanic and always covered in grease) and he was in the main street once, and he was waiting for a car to reverse out so he could take the park (he was coming to see me on his lunch break), and some bogan pulled up behind him, beeps the horn and yells "hurry up ya old fart". my mate took off his seatbelt, opens the door and steps out. the guy behind him straight away says "oh... sorry mate". he found it hilarious.

This is a good subject. I have owned one sleeper was a suzuki sierra black bullbar jacked up on 31's with a sr20 in it out of a 200sx had the vvti etc friggin screamed only it was all over the road. A friend has a 1uz Cressida manual white flogged my 32 i was shocked the sound from it gives it away its pretty loud. He is selling it for 5 grand has coilovers, brides, 18's, 1uz mated to manual box etc would be a bargain!

if i were to do the datsun 1200 i would find a chopped up sr20/ca18 wersion as not upset the enthusiests when the firewall foes back half a meter

a bigger engine goes into a escort than 7.5 twin turb so no briging it up that it wont fit

Friggin awesome thread!! Love the v8 volvos, they're so cheap to buy! Also never thought I'd see a volvo anywhere near an r1, but that's the good thing about the sleeper.

I reckon a legnum is the way to go. Not exactly pretty, they look like a volvo mated with a merc estate and the resulting spawn rear-ended a lancer. But they're fairly quick, very rare, damn cheap and of the half dozen I've ever seen, none of them drove like a douche. All a good recipe to keep below the radar.

The Legnum is definitely the way to go, except that cops are starting to know what they are. They are still rare though, and most people don't know what they are or what they're capable of. Legnums commonly get mistaken for some special type of Magna or Verada. Add to that the fact that they are cheap and the manual models are fairly reliable (with the exception of the damn lifters and interior clock), you've got a contender for the best sleeper on Australian roads.

    • I hadn't thought about the variable power steering assist. Presumably, it will always be the same level of assist as you get in an S14. The R32/3/4 are either helliishly heavy (at low speeds) if the solenoid is not powered at all, or hellishly too light (at high speed) if it is powered all the time. I presume that it is PWM controlled on those cars. I hadn't thought about the S cars not having variable assist. ugh. What crappy plebby cars they must be!  
    • Hmm yeah that is a good point. It looks like it'll just bolt in with no real issue besides maybe the bushings being different. My other concern was that 2 pin plug that I assume is used in some way to control the rack solenoid depending on the speed signal from the ecu. The DMAX rack doesn't even have that plug though so, don't think it'll matter. Might just order the rack and see how it goes. Will update this when I figure something out
    • I'd say it's a fair bet that the feed and return fluid lines will be in different enough spots that you would need to come up with a way to cut the originals short and adapt with new hard line adaption or braided teflon hoses or somesuch. But really, you have the car, you have the photos of the DMAX rack - you should be able to go out there and see for yourself whether they're in the same or different spots.
    • I've been doing some looking around and honestly was just considering throwing a new rack at it. I saw that the dmax silvia rack bolts up into the 33 with the silvia bushings but not sure if the high pressure lines will sit in the correct spot. I believe other version of the 33 rack are the same/similar to the racks that can be opened up without as much fuss so I assume the dmax rack would fit but any ideas?
    • I've never played with one, but I would expect that you are correct. That slot looks like it is intended to be used to unscrew the end, and the flats on the body would be better than grabbing it around the round bit with a pipe wrench. So, yeah, probably unscrews. You'll probably have to make a tool to drive in that slot.
