"Hot early pace at Targa

Wednesday, 29 April 2009

Queenslander Tony Quinn has set the early pace in the modern car section of Targa Tasmania, holding a narrow lead at the end of the opening day, which included nine testing stages in the state’s north.

Quinn, driving the latest Nissan GTR, is six seconds clear of Tasmanian hope Jason White, in his striking Lamborghini. Eight-time winner, Jim Richards, is third, a further two seconds back."

Breaking News: Richards out after TS23 accident

Friday, 01 May 2009

Eight time Targa Tasmania winner, Jim Richards, has retired from Targa Tasmania after an off-road excursion on TS23. The Porsche 911 GT2 suffered a holed radiator and broken suspension after hitting a bank.

This is the first time that Jim has failed to finish any Targa Tasmania stage that he has started.

Kevin Weeks now has a seven second lead over Tony Quinn, with Jason White a further two seconds back.

Any NEW`s on STEVE JONES ?,as he have been taken to hospital ,hope he`s ok .

my on the scene reporter tells me its just precautionary, sore back and getting xrays. almost certainly hs is OK.

car on the other hand is a bunch of loosely tied together spare parts now.

Alford is out, small off

Russ is out, snapped tailshaft (but coming back tomorrow to keep running up the back).

Leemhuis is running 14th on road but with a 20min penalty for late in last night. big oops.

So that really leaves Tony Quinn flying the flag for the GTRs, he is doing well and won Rally Tas in it last time out. Hope he keeps it on the road, he has a bit of a history :P

However...it is perfectly clear that the r35 was built to a price and is not the beautifully over-engineered car that the r32 was. These guys are all having trouble with the car going into limp mode all the time (normally after VDC cuts in at over 100klm/h), damaged engine acc belts, broken boxes, turbo wheels coming off. And it seems launch control just breaks things. And hard to clear error codes galore. If you've got one stick to road driving.

Nissan is tryin to make a 2 tonne machine go fast and something has to give. I think the electronic gremlins might be there to safeguard the car from self destruction. The original 32 was built as a race car first and then road car, and the R35 is a road car first, shoed horned to be a race car.

" The battle for modern section honours at Targa Tasmania has developed in to a two horse race between the Lamborghini of Kevin Weeks and the Nissan GTR of Tony Quinn cleared out from the field, with only the final leg from Strahan to Hobart remaining."

GO...Tony Quinn.....

I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings......but ALL cars are built to a price

Some can afford the price of entry, others bitch about it :)

Gee mate you need to calm down a bit. I dont see why you feel the urge to shoot down anyone that doesnt agree with your opinion that the R35 is the be all and end all of performance cars. You do seem to have a bit of a chip on your shoulder and come across as though you belittle anyone who doesn't have the budget for an R35 especially with comments that you have posted refering to older model GTR's as crappy imports from salt road city etc.

I dont see where Duncan was bitching about the price at all.

I dont think you could argue that the R32 was built and designed about around the group A rule book to fist and foremost win the grpA championship. While the R35 is built first and foremost as a road car all be it an extremely fast one. At this stage it seems that Duncans comments are a fairly reasonable observation.

    • Ok guys thank you very much. GCG highflow it is then 🙂
    • forgot to mention that when it does this it does not kill the engine, but I have not kept the pedal down long enough to let it, as I see no reason to beat up on it as its got to be something simple, small and dumb causing this.  And as soon as I let off pedal, the engine returns to its normal super smooth operation and rpms re-stabilize quickly, once below 4k.
    • neither stumble or cut really seem to be an appropriate term....hard to explain its like a rev limiter but at 4k, but it violently shakes engine and entire vehicle as the rpms will not rise over 4k, even with slow acceleration. as soon as it hits 4k, it sounds like entire spark is lost entirely. plugs were 1.1 which I used as such, but later put in new plugs gapped down to .8 changed back after issue arose when I replaced the coils, still does it with either plug gap...damn and it was all running so good.
    • Oh how times have changed! I actually lean it out relative to my water/methanol injector duty cycle. The methanol adds a lot of fueling and you can then lean it out even more due to reduced knock.
    • Yeah my thoughts are the same, a well thought out WMI setup, would be slightly ahead of just straight E85 and you're also chemically intercooling the charged air, dropping it even further. This is why you need to add so much more fuel as soon as you spray. I remember someone taking me through their set up before (Dennis, has a R33, lives around Cabramatta - no idea if he's still around on this forum). He would target AFR 10:1 on 98, then as WMI ramped on, AFR would lean back up to 11:1. Amazingly, he did this all through his PowerFC, a relay to cut power to his EBC solenoid if there was not enough line pressure on his WMI kit. And of course, if there wasn't any boost made above gate pressure, you wouldn't be accessing the load cells with heaps of timing for WMI. One downside to that rudimentary setup, once the WMI came on, the EBC would unleash the dragon, and of course all the timing. Tyres would fry lol.
