Are you referring to me ^^^

if so i didnt quote any power figures/ model or boost pressures !

and why would i lie, was just saying thats what i had and what happened when i changed.

And the turbo wasnt genuine t04 it was special hybrid built from Bill at ATS which is still currently on my car ! ( just used as reference for size )

Sure am.

Well without providing any information/results, then whats the point of making such a statement?

I'd like to see pressure numbers before/after cooler please.

Also temps pre and post cooler please after 15mins.

I suspect you've not even tested it, happy to be proven wrong here.

Ash he didn't say TO4Z, just T04, he could be running some GTS-R dinosaur turbo or something lol

mmm guess i shouldnt assume people have stopped using 1970's technology :whistling:

My bad :D

Indeed, could be any turbo, who knows. No numbers or anything provided when we all know R34 SMIC start getting maxed around 220-240rwkw from pressure drop and/or heat soak.

all i was saying is, all i changed was the 34smic to a greedy front mount and my car is now laggy, didnt know i needed a dyno to tel me that !

hence me being curious about the person that is now finding restrictions with the xr6 cooler an why i asked for results of what he finds.

Well no. You said, and i quote

how did use come to the conclusion the cooler is holding it up /snip/

Curious as i used to run 34 smic on my ceffy and r33 with t04 and never had problem, an they half the size.

You've said your setup was perfect without giving us one iota of information about it.

One would assume you have the information to back this up.

So my question stands.

1. What testing did you do to prove this?

while im here i'll chuck in a 2nd.

2. What setup were you using exactly?

Just because it made some numbers on a dyno doesnt tell anyone a thing.

there must be another issue. we often upgrade and customers love how much "free'r" the car feels. The 34 cooler can hardly do 4 pulls on a dyno without heat soaking and wont do more than one lap before becoming useless.

dude numbers aside, i was just saying my car became a lag monster, i/ me driving it was the proof, i still drive the shitbox everyday, if i hadnt cut the front bar out i would put the 34 cooler back on.

Never said anything was perfect just said the the fmic sucked, maybe not for intake temps like your saying, hence why i asked other guy to post results from xr6 cooler as this is what i was going to use on my 33 as an upgrade to the 34smic.

I didnt come in here to start argument or defend my self i was actually asking and just saying what i have felt/done first hand, not read or heard !

well, the threads gone to shite again,

for a bit of history. i was running 350rwhp with xforce exhaust, 550cc injectors, highflow, 600*300 fmic, blah blah blah @ 16psi. changed the xforce to a super drager as the xforce was a bit droney and redynoed at 330rwhp @ 14psi. removed 600*300 fmic and fitted xr6 intercooler and now at 15psi only making 290rwhp. fmic fault i would say. a falcon will make more power than mine as it is a 4 litre and needs less boost to make more power. pushing 15 psi through these just doesn't work unfortunately.

FYI, i am currently running RB25 with hks 2530 and typhoon FMIC tuned 17psi tapering off to 12psi at redline = 225rwkw, standard airbox & quiet exhaust. Same setup with with xr6 intercooler only made 210rwkw i think. Typhoon ain't that much bigger than xr6 but obviously made a difference and was almost a straight swap. Seems to work fine for me, I don't think I could make much more with that turbo anyway, without making the intake & exhaust much more 'illegal'.

my 2 cents

when i changed from std smic to 34smic the car pulled sooo much better, only to be lost when fmic.

Also i dont need to sit on the dyno all day an i dont do track work its a daily so really when is a 600x300 fmic on a daily practical

Well now that everyone has had their say still be good to see the results when he changes from xr6 cooler.

My next question then could i lose some of my lag by down sizing the intercooler pipes ?

if so whats the smallest before this becomes a pressure drop issue ?

i also read sometime back that having smaller pipes 1 side of the core and larger the other helps response ?

can anyone shed some light on this

There is another problem because yes upgrading to a front mount you will feel a lil bit of lag but it is not enough of a difference that you should really notice and be fussed with, If you saying its a lag monster and what not then you probably do have a problem maybe something as simple as a boost leak because 99percent of people who put a fmic dont complian and say thed rather go back.

Also see how well your car does in peak summer compared to the fmic those stock coolers are just shit.

Smaller pipes will help but will impede flow, better would be to shorten the piping which is just too long with the return flow coolers.

  • 1 year later...

Will i just had an XR6 Turbo IC fitted to my R33.

Have a Power FC, RB20DET wastegate actuator, fuel pump and turbo back exhaust.

Pulled 178RWKW.

Only minor trimming or the bumper and no cutting of the reo bar required.

pics to follow...

    • Hi, is the HKS  Tower Bar still available ? negotiable ? 🤔
    • From there, it is really just test and assemble. Plug the adapter cables from the unit into the back of the screen, then the other side to the car harness. Don't forget all the other plugs too! Run the cables behind the unit and screw it back into place (4 screws) and you should now have 3 cables to run from the top screen to the android unit. I ran them along the DS of the other AV units in the gap between their backets and the console, and used some corrugated tubing on the sharp edges of the bracket so the wires were safe. Plug the centre console and lower screen in temporarily and turn the car to ACC, the AV should fire up as normal. Hold the back button for 3 sec and Android should appear on the top screen. You need to set the input to Aux for audio (more on that later). I put the unit under the AC duct in the centre console, with the wifi antenna on top of the AC duct near the shifter, the bluetooth antenna on the AC duct under the centre console The GPS unit on top of the DS to AC duct; they all seem to work OK there are are out of the way. Neat cable routing is a pain. For the drive recorder I mounted it near the rear view mirror and run the cable in the headlining, across the a pillar and then down the inside of the a pillar seal to the DS lower dash. From there it goes across and to one USB input for the unit. The second USB input is attached to the ECUtec OBD dongle and the 3rd goes to the USB bulkhead connected I added in the centre console. This is how the centre console looks "tidied" up Note I didn't install the provided speaker, didn't use the 2.5mm IPod in line or the piggyback loom for the Ipod or change any DIP switches; they seem to only be required if you need to use the Ipod input rather than the AUX input. That's it, install done, I'll follow up with a separate post on how the unit works, but in summary it retains all factory functions and inputs (so I still use my phone to the car for calls), reverse still works like factory etc.
    • Place the new daughterboard in the case and mount it using the 3 small black rivets provided, and reconnect the 3 factory ribbon cables to the new board Then, use the 3 piggyback cables from the daughterboard into the factory board on top (there are stand offs in the case to keep them apart. and remember to reconnect the antenna and rear cover fan wires. 1 screw to hold the motherboard in place. Before closing the case, make a hole in the sticker covering a hole in the case and run the cable for the android unit into the plug there. The video forgot this step, so did I, so will you probably. Then redo the 4 screws on back, 2 each top and bottom, 3 each side and put the 2 brackets back on.....all ready to go and not that tricky really.
    • Onto the android unit. You need to remove the top screen because there is a daughterboard to put inside the case. Each side vent pops out from clips; start at the bottom and carefully remove upwards (use a trim remover tool to avoid breaking anything). Then the lower screen and controls come out, 4 screws, a couple of clips (including 3 flimsy ones at the top) and 3 plugs on the rear. Then the upper screen, 4 screws and a bunch of plugs and she is out. From there, remove the mounting brackets (2 screws each), 4 screws on the rear, 2 screws top and bottom and 3 screws holding in the small plates on each side. When you remove the back cover (tight fit), watch out for the power cable for the fan, I removed it so I could put the back aside. The mainboard is held in by 1 screw in the middle, 1 aerial at the top and 3 ribbon cables. If you've ever done any laptop stuff the ribbon cables are OK to work with, just pop up the retainer and they slide out. If you are not familiar just grab a 12 year old from an iphone factory, they will know how it works The case should now look like this:
    • Switching the console was tricky. First there were 6 screws to remove, and also the little adapter loom and its screws had to come out. Also don't forget to remove the 2 screws holding the central locking receiver. Then there are 4 clips on either side....these were very tight in this case and needed careful persuading with a long flat screw driver....some force required but not enough to break them...this was probably the fiddliest part of the whole job. In my case I needed both the wiring loom and the central locking receiver module to swap across to the new one. That was it for the console, so "assembly is the reverse of disassembly"
