drop-bear82
Hi guys, I have been considering an aftermarket mechanical LSD, probably a Kaaz 1.5 -way and was wondering if anyone has experience / an opinion on the durability of these. My car is an R33 GTST with some basic mods and is my daily driver. I want the diff for the odd track day here and there and for the occasional traffic-light grand prix. I have read plenty of positive reviews here about the aftermarket LSDs but ultimately I want something that is also going to last. If the Kaaz unit isn't going to give me more than say 20,000km then maybe I would be better off shimming up the standard diff every so often? Any advice appreciated Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/292759-lifespan-on-aftermarket-mechanical-lsds/ Share on other sites

drop-bear82
is your concern based on anything ? and what exactly are you woried will wear out ? Just worried about how quickly the friction plates might wear out. I guess my concern was that while I had read a lot of positive information about these diffs, I couldn't seem to find any info about how long they last. I just don't really want to spend $1300 or thereabouts on a new diff and then have to replace it after 18months of mainly street driving. If anyone has any experience with these things on a daily driver and has got a decent amount of kms out of it, be it the Kaaz, Nismo, Tomei, I would be interested to know. R31Nismoid
My shimmed/rebuild stock diff is mechanical, it was the first thing done really, and that was about 10,000-15,000 ago now. Still going strong without a hint of issues. A Kaaz would be the same, as with all other diff's. Nothing will last however if you abuse it every day of its life Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/292759-lifespan-on-aftermarket-mechanical-lsds/#findComment-4891347 Share on other sites
blind_elk
...and for the occasional traffic-light grand prix.We don't do that sort of thing here! Birds
It's the length of a piece of string mate. There's no exact km a diff or gearbox will last, there's not even an approximate. Even on the known weak gearboxes I deal with there can be 80,000km difference between two cars when the "factory faults" begin to show. A diff, even mechanical LSD, can outlast the engine if you drive it with that as your goal...it can last you 10 minutes if that is not your goal. Don't expect to get away with treating mechanical items harshly and being able to use mileage as some sort of wear indicator, because something can go on you at any minute. The worst mistake people make is not running in a new or freshly rebuilt/reconditioned drivetrain component. I've sent out diffs that come back for warranty a week later and the customer was stupid/honest enough to leave their bald tyres on the car and worn down crown/pinion inside the diff housing. bubba
Had the Nismo Pro 2-way in my 32 for about a year before it stopped being daily driven, no dramas yet and it cops a fair hiding (and more so soon). Mr GTR-32
Quick question are the Kaaz Lsds noisy whilst driving and around corners. I have heard that they are and also any info to compare how good the Nismo lsd is. cheers, Dave. r33cruiser
Mine is extremely noisy. Pedestrians will definitely hear it. When cold its fine, drives like a viscous. Its when its warm that it gets savage. But u wont be sorry with a kaaz, on a track car, on a daily....................not so much KAAZ FTW. Birds
They are certainly good diffs for the track...wouldn't put one in a daily though, you'll get sick of hearing ch ch ch ch ch around every corner. bigmikespec
The KAAZ LSD centres seem well priced compared to the Nismo and OS Giken. Comparable in terms of performance and durability? (on a R33 GTR). Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/292759-lifespan-on-aftermarket-mechanical-lsds/#findComment-4943352 Share on other sites

Birds
I'll vouch for that, Hamish's car only started making noise during a U turn on Tuesday night when he planted it Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/292759-lifespan-on-aftermarket-mechanical-lsds/#findComment-4944588 Share on other sites
bozodos
a mate has a 2 way Nismo and its a pretty chattery bugger, dosen't annoy me personally, but I guess some people wouldn't like it. Can't you get the viscous diff shimmed, or am I thinking of the R200 in the HR31 etc. Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/292759-lifespan-on-aftermarket-mechanical-lsds/#findComment-4944860 Share on other sites
bubba
Question for Bubba how was the nismo as a daily was it noisy like the Kaaz are?.Cheers, Dave It is noisy, more so when cold (it's really, really tight when cold so it skips and clunks). Once warm it slips when it should but you get a kind of dull grinding sort of noise. Really, it's about how you drive these things.. hold constant throttle round a corner and it's fine. Go round the corner on decel and it will clunk and skip (I have the 2-way), go round the corner with a little bit of gas and it will clunk and skip.. go round the corner with lots of gas and it's super fun happy slide time Personally, I love it and wouldn't want any other diff.. not putting one in the Stag though Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/292759-lifespan-on-aftermarket-mechanical-lsds/#findComment-4947292 Share on other sites
Mr GTR-32
Thanks Hamish & Bubba I might look into the 1.5way Nismo that's Seems ok not to noisy is what I'm after thanks for the input people if anyone else has an OS giken to compare with that would close the circle of info that I would need to choose for my GTR. Cheers, Dave. Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/292759-lifespan-on-aftermarket-mechanical-lsds/#findComment-4947668 Share on other sites
archie01
I have the Nismo GT LSD Pro 1.5way in my 32 gtr. A touch chattery when turning and cold but hardly much chatter when warmed up. Will chatter slightly though when doing a u turn and warm. Note: it chatters and cluncks a lot more with the run in oil that comes with it (for obvious reasons) and has quitened down since putting in some castrol diff oil.
