Hi People,

I have a fresh mystery at hand (without solving that other one about a disconnected hose in engine bay).

Yesterday when driving home, I noticed a squeaking noise (sort of like the springs of on old bed) coming from the rear left of the car every time I would turn. When walking away, I saw a dettached cable coming out from underneath the back of my car (R34 gtt). It seems to be a steel cable wrapped in what looks like a thermal/heat-proof material. The end seems to have some threading (suggesting that it may screw in somewhere, or something screws onto it). But I can't seem to see anything except a few holes in the underbody (nothing with threading) where it may attached to.

The first pic shows what it basically looks like. The second pic shows where it is attached (on the back left, inside the "support" for the rear bumper i guess). There isn't one on the other side (the place where it would go is plugged by a piece of rubber).

It's on the side of the exhaust...So I'm thining it might be a cable to support the exhaust? But I've never seen a exhaust supported by a cable.

-Is it possible the exhaust was making the squeaking noise when the car was turning?

-Is this cable to support something to do with the suspension etc? if so, why would it be attached to the the inside of the bumper support?

-Is it some sort of grounding wire?

The next time someone looks under their R34, please let me know what this is and what it connects to? Or if you want to be an absolute legend, take a pic on your phone :)

Its for the genuine exhaust. Low throttle one of the exhausts close/restrict, but once you start getting the revs up it opens up. It mentions it on the R33 factory manual - the r34 factory manual does not mention it..... *someone please correct me if I'm wrong.*

hi, yep i thought that too when i looked at it. although on the 33 its closer to the front of the car, but I do think that imho that is what it is. obviously the exhaust is not stock. and they didnt incorporate this.

My GTT has a big stainless steel bracket for the aftermarket muffler in the same spot. nothing else

it wouldnt be a handbrake thats not even close to it.

to test , with cool tailpipe, lay on the ground and wiggle the muffler, 90% sure its a broken off bracket on it. and it would squeak like a old truck on corners/take off. bumps etc.

unless its something added by the aliens ????

Hey all, thank you sooo much for your replies. This morning I was like "damn zero replies"...and now it's like "ch-ching! jackpot".

The fact that a few of you don't have it, puts my mind at ease...since it's not an absolutely necessary thing. Just out of curiosity..those of you who don't have it...do you have stock or aftermarket exhausts?

Since iseekool mentioned it's for the geuine/stock exhausts...mine's aftermarket, yet the cable is there. But I'm guessing it WAS getting used, since the dettached cable and squeaking happened at the same time. unless it's a coincidence?

I'll start looking more closely around the exhaust area, and see if I have any luck. If I can't attach it normally, I guess I could make some sort of metal harness for the exhaust to sit in (as long as that squeaking stops).

PS: i seekool...is that anything to do with the SPORT/SILENT exhaust switch? Whenever i press it, I can hear something moving...but don't notice anything sound-wise...I guess coz it was meant for the standard exhaust.

I just recently changed my exhaust and there was no such contraption on the stocker.

My bet would be that if you looked under the car at that thing while a mate pressed the exhaust switch it might move :blink:

It kinda looks similar to an actuator of sorts. And if it was for the factory muffler then it would open/close something inside.

My guess is, it is your Exhaust Temperature Sensor.

If you had a look, there should be a EXH Temp Warning embroidered on your sun visor on the driver side, in Japanese (That's probably why you didn't read it LOL!)

Again that's for the R32, on the R34 maybe different...

I know R32's had them and mine has been cut off, just a cable hanging cuz of my aftermarket exhaust when it came with the car.

But R32's had it near the Cat converter... That's why I can only guess for the R34.

Exhaust Temp Sensor is there to warn you, when the exhaust gets really hot, the temp light will come on.

How does an exhaust get hot? When the engine is running, giving it a good spirited run down the track, but were talking excessively high temps.

My guess is, it is your Exhaust Temperature Sensor.

If you had a look, there should be a EXH Temp Warning embroidered on your sun visor on the driver side, in Japanese (That's probably why you didn't read it LOL!)

I actually think your referring to a cat temp sensor, rather than an "exhaust temp" sensor.

Every car i have had has it, and its actually there more to tell you that your cat is f**ked/blocked.

Because the cat catches all the nasties, over time it clogs up and causes restrictions. And the restriction will obviously create alot more heat than normal because your forcing the same amount of exhaust through a more restricted area.

If the cat is in good working order, or not there at all (decat), you shouldnt ever see the temp light on the dash come on at all, even on the track.

Eiher way...whether it's some sort of cable for pulling (silent/sports mode) for the standard exhaust....or a cat temp sensor as you have mentioned....I guess I should leave it on (as opposed to cutting it off) just incase I ever have to put the standard exhaust back on. But yeh, for now I've just just used a cable tie to hold it up and away from the road. Still don't kow what that squeaking is. maybe something wrong with the suspension. I don't know. Oh well.     • Don't even try to run it on the stock ECU if you're going to have the boost controller bring boost above ~10 psi. I've already told you that. If you use the Nistune ECU, you will need to CAREFULLY read the available documentation for Neo tuning, and read some threads on the Nistune forums, to discover the various things you have to do to prevent the ECU from going bananas when the boost is too high. The is a table associated with th boost sensor that must be modified to prevent it from shitting the bed. This is just one of the things that you will need to do to the tune in Nistune, because the Neo turbo ECU will be expecting to see a number of things (such as the TCS) that are not there, and you have to block the DTCs on those. It is totally not surprising to me that you are having the problems that you are, but the solutions to these problems have been known for >15 years. So just get it done.
    • Hi. Sry iam not a mechanic and iam not at the car atm so i dont know 100% but they told they measure those and even try to change those. AFM they have two. Coils are new a they have my old one too. Plugs too. ECU...we have 25 NEO stock and Nistune 25 NEO.   But i dont know if any one those could be the problem and why/if/what can cause this, Only thing they did not check is fuel...but that walbro 255 is new(like 1,5 years)... That fuel pressure gauge idk...but i let them know Any suggestions?   EDIT: how can they know if it is like you say he ECU pull power when it reaches a specific boost level that is too high? Tha car has boost controler
