Leaning towards the Skyline now...almost have lost consideration for the Falcon after going for a drive in a few...the 'drive' isn't there unlike the Skyline series.

a friend of mine had a new F6, two or three years back. not sure on the model. i dont pay much attention to falcadores ;)

but after having driven it myself several times, and been a passenger while he treated it like a 2 dollar hooker, i've got to say, theyre so very very boring.

the skyline feels much more exciting, even at half the speed.

on another note, i've driven a 6 litre ss ute. thunder? cloudy? chance of rain? cant remember the name. but that thing hauled ass. it would literally kick you in the nuts when you werent looking, and then howl at the moon like a mental case. i dont know why a ute with no weight over the rear wheels would need such a huge amount of torque. but alas, the owner put it into a wall. not surprising really :)

gotta love the traction control in the LS series commodores which kicks the clutch back out with enough force to actually hurt your foot lol

Or when it turns itself on and off by itself at will and then just stops working altogether for days at a time.

Just had a quick look on redbook and it seems the utes only weigh about 40kg less than the equivalent sedan...and given that the front end is going to be identical, this means the weight in the rear wouldn't be much different to a sedan...

The idea that falcon and commodore utes have a really light rear end is generally a misconception. Maybe its true for some utes, but not so much the holden and ford ones...

the overall weight of the utes is roughly the same but the distribution of weight is different to the sedans. the weight is more forward on the utes and there is less over the rear wheels. it isn't as huge as people think, but there is certainly a noticable difference in the weight over the rear wheels.

with the ute there is more weight on the centre of the chassis which means that some of that weight is over the front wheels, where as a sedan has more weight directly over the rear wheels.

if your 350z has wooped typhoons the other guy is probably not trying. the 350z is slower over 400m and the 350z is slower around all tracks i've checked. A flash and tickle on a F6 gives around 50-70rwkw and 12's.... a flash and tickle on a 350z gives you a light pocket and a sore ass. The 370z however seems to be quite a step up, but is still hell hard to make good power.

totally agree, this taken a few years ago at Sandown... my 180rwkw GTST was a couple of seconds faster than the Ford and the Ford was several seconds faster than the 350Z... The Z really struggled up the hill on the back straight and the Ford was a bit heavy for S tyres (and struggled with brakes)... The line was pretty good everywhere;)

To the OP I reckon you have made a wise choice, don't overextend while at Uni... IMO I'm +1 for the 34GTT, great car for the money

Isn't it funny how Holden/Ford guys used to call us ricers... have you seen the new lot of cars coming out from HSV FPV, they are riced from factory with holes and spoilers all over the show! makes the R look positively understated

The xr6t might be a bit of a boring drive but damn are those cares comfy since they were built specifically for Australian roads just feels like your riding on a cushion. The only thing is that they are heavy as and wouldn't be that much fun through the corners even if they do handle decently for the size/weight of the car. That is the biggest reason i wouldn't go with one atm i like to be able to take corners at a bit of speed every now and again rather than slow down to 20 corner then plant it (exaggeration here)

Cushion is right...we likened ours more to a cloud actually..But hey the Care Bears got around on clouds so did Monkey Magic

dont bother with the FPV.. drive one you wont like it .. power is there but not usable..... either way drive the cars your looking at buying ..

The power isnt usable? Are you serious? Plenty of effortless torque and with decent tyres and a reasonable tune you'll have no trouble even when modded. The criticisms about weight and handling are fair enough but there are also some pretty questionable arguments against them here.

just because a car is heavy doesn't mean it can't handle. for example, r35 gtr = 1700kg+. put a decent suspension package under a falcon and they will handle much better. if you are going to comment about the stock suspension on the falcon make sure you compare it to a skyline with stock suspension otherwise it isn't a fair fight. yes the stock suspension of the skyline will be better than the falcon, that is because the falcon's suspension is designed for shitty australian roads.

i've been in a lowered xr6t and the ride was still very good comfort wise and it also handled very well too.

that's exactly what i was saying that it handled alright but was many times more comfortable than a standard r34 would be

you want comfort buy a bmw or a merc..you never realize how shitty australian cars suspension is until you,ve driven some euro trash...

Also people are amazed at how quickly i can take speed humps in the skyline with bilstein suspension, which i believe is also eurotrash...

We did a test one day down a street with speeed humps first the standard commodore rather bouncy and shit, then in the bmw, just sapped the bumps up effortlessly, it was this day i became a fan the bmw....another copmparison was a FE2 commodore vs a subaru liberty down a bumpy gravel road, the subaru flew down the road at 80 no worries, the commodore couldnt do 40 and it shook the f**k out of it....

In conclusion, aussie cars are great out on the freeways on long hauls but around town they are rubbish...just depends where you plan to drive, i can understand someone needing a 2 tonne car if you your daily commute is 50kms of open freeway to work, but when you drive 5kms on suburban streets, then try to park it in a shopping centre carpark its just silly

my mum has a 530i with the sports package upgrade (m5 wheels, suspension and little things here and there) and i wouldn't take it over speed bumps very quickly car feels about as rough as my stock suspension r34 likely due to having the slightly lowered sportier m series suspension in it but still i can't see them going over speed bumps as comfortably what bmw was it that you used?

there are some cheap ones coming through now too, 25k will get you a nice one and it wont be as flogged out as a 33 gtr

    • looking for some help and maybe some insight on others experience with a new LSD. R34 GT ran and drive beautifully, but always alot of grip loss due to the open R200 rear end, so I just installed a new 1.5 LSD way into the stock open R200 for a ER34. Simple. Everything seemed right. I test drove for the first time this weekend. as I started to back out the garage the first time slowly with tires straight it sounded and felt like I had a loose or half disconnected drive shaft...that was clucking around loose and shaking entire vehicle, and making it feel like the trans clutch was spontaneously slipping then grabbing very roughly while just letting out pedal slowly. I backed it out went to pull forward with the same noise, shake and slip grab feeling with hesitation, I turned the tires to back out more and then pulled ahead some same thing but worst because of added wheel resistance (which that I expected) puzzled … pulling it back in checking everything over and finding nothing wrong, I tried it the next day. same thing, couldn’t believe how it shook everything again making a terrible noise and making it feel like the trans clutch was slipping and grabbing, but I got it out of garage into the driveway, got it straight, drove forward and then reveres a few times in a straight line everything shaking , causing what felt like clutch slip and grab every time, sounded like right behind front driver tire and I could feel it in the floor board with my feet,... worst right when beginning to let clutch pedal out to engage slightly, shuttering and sounding terrible along the way…I managed to slowly get down the road, babying it the whole way, once I was rolling (out of 1st) seemed to be better and between shifts, then clutch felt closer to normal…not slip/ grab etc., but back down to any stop, straight road or turning, same thing. Made no difference if all tires were straight or if I was turning. All other gauge read out correct. with in 2 miles as planned I reached the empty parking lot and performed the break in procedure that came with lsd, essentially to drive in a figure 8 a bunch.  Did this, binding chattering, and shaking the car the whole way. I drove it back home seemed somewhat normal once I was in straight line and past 10 mph or so, and I know it will “bind” on corners and cause some tires squeal when turning especially from a stop, but when I begin to move it still causes what feels like the trans clutch to slip and jerk badly as well as shaking the entire car, and sounds terrible, that I didn’t expect. I used the fluid they supplied with LSD kit and did the breaking, planning to change fluid as they suggest after breaking, but wondering will it get smoother or less aggressive with use? maybe a 1.5 is just too aggressive for normal road driving?   I have a LSD that I put in my 71 cuda when I restored it, with amazing smooth , quite yet effective results. Different style LSD but that ones a joy to drive. maybe expecting too much from this R200?

    • Hello!  i just finished manual swaping my r34 skyline with a r33 rb20de box(RB71C)box  When the car is running it squeaks crazy loud and it was smoking from the gearbox area. The gearbox is fine it was tested. The clutch slave cylinder seems like it doesn't fully releases the clutch.
