Hi all,

I have an R33 GTS-T with 87,000ks

The gearbox was a little notchy when I bought it so I did a service as recommended on this site with the castrol VMX 80. I also used the Nulon anti wear additive.

It has improved all shift and noise but the box still has a nice notch into second until very warm, dosnt usually crunch (has happend once I think?)

Is this normal for one of these? or is the box screwed?

Would using the redline shcokproof stop the notch for a while?

Where do you buy this redline stuff and what weight is recommended?

look forward to peoples thoughts

my 34 has a notchy shifter (1st 2nd only) when cold and I've put that redline stuff (shockproof/smurfs blood) and I'm not sure it has improved anything... If you intend to be keeping the car for a while I'd say save up some dough and get the gearbox and synchros reconditioned for teh win.

Hey mate, i had exactly the same situation, bought the car when it had bout 85000k and gearbox was pretty stiff from 1st to second when cold, got redline in there now, still noticeable for the first few shifts but much better than before!

rb boxes r often notchy when cold, just take it easy. lightweight might help a bit no experience with it. heavyweight is rubbish for the gearbox, i dumped the oil after a week!

maybe try motul fflsd 75/90+nulon additive i've used it many times on customers cars and my own

see how ya go, if its synchros stuffed, nothing can bandaid that :P

redline will help the problem but give valvoline super synth 75w90 a go, its only 50 bucks, i had a crunchy 2nd gear in a past car, dumped the vmx80 out of it, changed it to 75w90 valv, still kinda notchy wen cold but after 5mins, it was perfect

vmx80 made it crunchy wen cold and notchy wen hot

some boxes love vmx80 though, it all depends on the condition of the box, different boxes like different weights, that is why you will often find people will have different views on oils, especially with gearboxes

edit: i just checked out that site, very cheap pricing on the redline oils, i will order some smurfblood for my gtr :P the prices on that site are almost half the price of redline products i see on shelf at shops in perth!

yeah the vmx80 was great when it went in, note I used the nulon g70 too but its gotten worse again.

Very stiff when cold, only into second and not that flash wehn hot either, i might try the redline and see if it makes a difference

do you use the nulon dditive with the redline shockproof?

I recently pulled apart an R32 RB25DE box with pretty low kays on it as I had it in my track car, the box is smooth and quiet and everything worked nicely except that once it was nice and warm the top gear synchro stopped working.

In a nutshell, while the synchro wear was within factorly limits, it just did not work when it was hot and different oils made no difference. I change dthe top gear synchro ring and it now works perfectly, the only problem is that now the other four feel tired comapred to it including the standard notchy shift from first to second. Someone mentioned that RB boxes are pretty well known for it, I would go further back than that, it is fairly typical of Nissan and Datsun boxes in general. So long as it is only noticeably notchy when it is cold I would just go easy on it and worry about it if the synchro gets batty when it is hot. I plan to pull my box down again later this year and replace the rest, along with having a look to see if I can swap the top gear with my other box, which is an R31 RB20DET box and has a shorter top gear ratio that is much more suited to track use.

You want "lightweight shockproof" and get it from http://www.performancelub.com/ (excellent customer service)

+1 for Harold hs Awsome to deal with.

the R32 gtr box 4US qaurts of Redline.....

ok I have ordered the oil. Ten out of ten for customer service from harols (the website recommended above)! just fantastic. Oil should be here tomorrow.

Now here is my question. I have vmx 80 with the g70 additive in the car now, has been there for about 1500ks.

Apparently the g70 reduces friction and causes the syncrhos not to engage. If I drain the oil overnight will it get all the nulon out or do I have to flush it? If I drain it will the little bit of nulon left upset the redline oil?

thoughts would be appreciated, just such a pain to drain it, dont want to do it more than I have to if it can be avoided

thanks

Not going to get change from 10k on a gearset installed.  $30k++ for sequential.   I know you run the risk of a damaged used one and parts are hard to get but as a street car gearbox its really hard to beat. If you enjoy a more traditional manual, its the choice no question.
