Refueling would solve so many problems. Two, three or four stints where cars are driving flat out rather than circulating to manage fuel, tyres, engines and gearboxes.

for sure. no refuelling is killing the races. making them into a very predictable thing strategy wise. you start slow, get faster. previously you got to chose when you were fast and when you were slow and if you had really big balls or your car suffered under heavy weight, you could do 1 extra stop and not have to carry a big load of fuel at any point in the race. as long as you could make the most out of that pace with good track position and good run through traffic.

anyway, race was boring as fk. I was glad when it was finished and I could get back to 1988. I'm up to round 4 Mexico city. so far prost won race 1 in brazil, senna won race 2 at Imola and would have won race 3 at monaco but stuck it in the barrier 10 laps from the end (with a 50 second lead over p2!) and gifted the win to prost. race 4 at mexico and senna is on pole again, 4 races, 4 poles. racing is good through the field too. senna v prost for p1 and p2, then you have berger, nanini, boutsen, albereto, piquet, mansell etc fighting for the rest of the points. good variety in donks with tiny little 1.5L V6 and 4 cyl turbo engines leading the way despite being knobled with a 2.5bar pop-off valve (osella even have a 1.5L V8 turbo! though to be fair they barely qualify most weekends) on them with NA 3.5L V8s holding their own this year against most turbos except the maclaren honda's really.

good times.

That whole race weekend was complete arse...

I miss v10s.

I miss refueling.

I miss testing.

I miss the competition between Bridgestone and Michelin.

I can't stand how drivers are now being totally compelled to drive to conserve and nothing else.

I can't stand these new tires, kers and DRS. It feels so effing artificial...

The Newey designed, Judd powered Leyton House/March car by any chance???

well honda maclaren were the top of the tree still running a 1.5 V6T, ferrari were pretty good and had a 1.5 turbo which I think was V6 too, beneton where the team I was thinking of with the 3.5L ford V8 (a number of teams where using various different spec ford 3.5V8s). they were finally able to keep up with most of the turbos (except maclaren who smashed everyone) with nannini and boutsen well up the order most weekends.

but yeah capelli in the march was doing pretty well too in 88 with a few podiums from memory. but mauricio gulglemain (forgive the spelling) was just so so at best. and both of them failed to finish a shitload of races. I think the judd V8 was ok, the ford V8 was pretty good in the top spec, even the megatron (lol) V8 in the arrows was up there for pace.

it was an interesting year. but it showed even heavily restricted the turbo engines were still good enough to beat the 3.5L NA V8s...

How in the fcuk are places like this and hungary allowed to be apart of the calander.

Weird place Valencia- Some of the camera angles/aerial shots make it look like Spain's version of Monte, and then other parts of the track look for all the world like Port Botany.

Lastly, DRS is as shitful a Ecclestone... if DRS must be used, can we at least have it available on corners?

a reduction in downforce would be fulleh awesome for your cornering speed

Is that the Benetton's with the delicious hypercolour 80's livery's ?

Boring race at a boring track. Why do i watch valencia every year? So all the effort into drs, tyres, kers still couldn't liven up a boring track. Downforce ruins racing.

I look forward to the turbo engines, but that might be because a significant change like that might mix things up a bit. Just because they go turbo now doesn't mean they won't go back to NA one day. I think I only watched 2-3 seasons of the v10's, but once hamilton said eau rouge was "easy flat" in the v8 these engines were ruined for me. They just took away the excitement, the aero is too much for the power.

I dont think that turbos will make it interesting straight off the bat. Some teams will struggle and some teams will react brilliantly.

I think ferrari deal very well with the change and snag at least a few championshiips out of it. It looks to be thier only life line, because currently, they're fcuked without it.

It looks like we may have a few one sided seasons ahead. After this one sided season is over, of course

yep, these ones. dunno if I'd called it hyper colour. back in the 80s it was UCB...united colors of benneton... lol.

Man old F1 cars are just so cool. one day I will own a 80s/90s F1 car!! I have to.

But maybe (politely) you've missed the point- By mandating a formula that has some development relevance to mass-market manufacturers (i.e: hi-po small turbo 4's), the FIA actually encourages some involvement in F1 by volume manufacturers through tangible development benefits?

Euro V combined-cycle tests probably hold little relevance to ~800hp 19,000rpm limited N/A V8's...

I couldnt give a rats about manufacturer involvement in F1. They come & go as they please. F1 appears to be going ok given Honda, Toyota, Ford, BMW have all bailed out.

Euro V compliance has no relevance to any engine used in motor sport.

Seriously why do people even try and bother to draw parallels between road cars and formula 1 cars when there is none other then they run an ICE and have 4 wheels.

Something like what group A was is right up that alley....

or even duh duh duh ! production car racing !

Hoping they cant use their own and have to align themselves with major manufacturers - force the turbo companies to do more R and D on turbo frames suited to 700/800hp.

Well, at least thats the hope!

That could be very interesting, but would that technology ever filter down to road cars? I mean road going turbos just don't need to survive the bashing f1 engines would give, it might just end up being specialised, independent technology

Naughty blown exhaust ! haha.

Nice pics, "snaked"

Lol can you imagine the regs "must run turbo from the Garrett GT40 range...

Nice fuel pump, looks like the Bosch 044 most of us run today

Love the oil cooler setup for the diff, very neat

That looks like a dorian timer on the back aswel - bit pov pack compared to the rest of the gear there

    • Update 3: Hi all It's been a while. Quite a lot of things happened in the meantime, among other things the car is (almost) back together and ready to be started again. Things that I fixed or changed: Full turbo removal, fitting back the OEM turbo oil hardlines. Had to do quite a bit of research and parts shopping to get every last piece that I need and make it work with the GT2860 turbos, but it does work and is not hard to do. Proves that the previous owner(s) just did not want to. While I was there I set the preload for the wastegates to 0,9bar to hopefully make it easier for the tuner to hit the 370hp I need for the legal inspections that will follow later on. Boost can always go up if necessary. Fitted a AN10 line from the catch can to the intake hose to make the catchcan and hopefully the cam covers a slight vacuum to have less restrictive oil returns from the head and not have mud build up as harshly in the lines and catch can. Removed the entire front interior just shy of the dashboard itself to clean up some of the absolutely horrendous wiring, (hopefully) fix the bumpy tacho and put in LED bulbs while I was there. Also put in bulbs where there was none before, like the airbag one. I also used that chance to remove the LED rpm gauge on the steering column, which was also wired in absolute horror show fashion. Moved the 4in1 Prosport gauge from sitting in front of the OEM oil pressure gauge to the center console vents, I used a 3D printed vent piece to hold that gauge there. The HKB steering wheel boss was likely on incorrectly as I sometimes noticed the indicator reset being uneven for left vs. right. In the meantime also installed an airbag delete resistor, as one should. Installed Cube Speed premium short shifter. Feels pretty nice, hope it'll work great too when I actually get to drive. Also put on a fancy Dragon Ball shift knob, cause why not. My buddy was kind enough to weld the rust hole in the back, it was basically rusted through in the lowermost corner of the passenger side trunk area where the wheel arch, trunk panel and rear quarter all meet. Obviously there is still a lot of crustiness in various areas but as long as it's not rusted out I'll just treat and isolate the corrosion and pretend it's not there. Also had to put down a new ground wire for the rear subframe as the original one was BARELY there. Probably a bit controversial depending on who you ask about this... but I ended up just covering the crack in the side of the engine block, the one above the oil feed, with JB Weld. I used a generous amount and roughed up the whole area with a Dremel before, so I hope this will hold the coolant where it should be for the foreseeable future. Did a cam cover gasket job as the half moons were a bit leaky, and there too one could see the people who worked on this car before me were absolute tools. The same half moons were probably used like 3 times without even cleaning the old RTV off. Dremeled out the inside of the flange where the turbine housing mates onto the exhaust manifolds so the diameter matches, as the OEM exhaust manifolds are even narrower than the turbine housings as we all know. Even if this doesn't do much, I had them out anyways, so can't harm. Ideally one would port-match both the turbo and the manifold to the gasket size but I really didn't feel up to disassembling the turbine housings. Wrapped turbo outlet dumps in heat wrap band. Will do the frontpipe again as well as now the oil leak which promted me to tear apart half the engine in the first place is hopefully fixed. Fitted an ATI super damper to get rid of the worn old harmonic balancer. Surely one of the easiest and most worth to do mods. But torquing that ARP bolt to spec was a bitch without being able to lock the flywheel. Did some minor adjustments in the ECU tables to change some things I didn't like, like the launch control that was ALWAYS active. Treated rusty spots and surface corrosion on places I could get to and on many spots under the car, not pretty or ideal but good enough for now. Removed the N1 rear spats and the carbon surrounding for the tailpipe to put them back on with new adhesive as the old one was lifting in many spots, not pretty. Took out the passenger rear lamp housing... what do you know. Amateur work screwed me again here as they were glued in hard and removing it took a lot of force, so I broke one of the housing bolts off. And when removing the adhesive from the chassis the paint came right off too. Thankfully all the damaged area won't be visible later, but whoever did the very limited bodywork on this car needs to have their limbs chopped off piece by piece.   Quite a list if I do say so myself, but a lot of time was spent just discovering new shit that is wrong with the car and finding a solution or parts to fix it. My last problem that I now have the headache of dealing with is that the exhaust studs on the turbo outlets are M10x1.25 threaded, but the previous owner already put on regular M10 nuts so the threads are... weird. I only found this out the hard way. So now I will just try if I can in any way fit the front pipe regardless, if not I'll have to redo the studs with the turbos installed. Lesson learned for the future: Redo ALL studs you put your hands on, especially if they are old and the previous owners were inept maniacs. Thanks for reading if you did, will update when the engine runs again. Hope nothing breaks or leaks and I can do a test drive.
    • No those pads are DBA too  but they have colors too. I look at the and imo the green "street" are the best.
    • I’m not sure what happened I told them about sonic tunes free OTS tune and the next the I know .. I was booted..   To funny
    • Yea - I mean I've seen my fuel pump which is decades old and uh, while I'm not saying this with real knowledge... but I sure get the ick at using anything in the fuel system that produced the state of that pump. Many years ago I went through multiple pumps (and strainers) before I dropped the tank to clean it out with extreme violence. I'm talking the car would do maybe 50km before coming to a halt, which resulted in me cleaning out the filter with some brake cleaner and going on my way. None of my stuff ever looked like what came out of your fuel tank. I don't think I'd be happy with it unless every single component was replaced (or at least checked/cleaned/confirmed to be clean here).
