I cant find any posts here that arent specific to the RB25? Not sure where your reading.

Apologies I did miss the RB20DET at the top, I just saw that all the responses were to do with the RB25.

I have also heard tuners say, its only worth it on RB26's, not sure if they are including RB20s as well?

Highly beneficial, because there is no VCT on RB20s. RB25 motors are blessed with 10 degree advance pre 4700rpm or whatever it's set at. I like pre MBT.

From what I've been told today, I'd say Poncams for a decently modified RB20DET will be most beneficial, both in low down torque and boost response.

Correction, I have on my RB20DET, prior to the days of me knowing anything about tuning, but saying that the boost "felt" like it came on earlier.

i had hks cam and adj cam gears on my rb20 and now same in my rb22 - very well respected tuner said leave them both at zero... so i havent had any back to back testing done ...but i take his word for it

Cams with stock cam gear settings work the best?

Cam gears will be somewhat beneficial but not as much as just upgrading the shafts themselves.

pretty close to rb25 with same turbo etc etc either same peak power or a little less (5%) when comparing numbers from the rb25 power threads but obviously a little more laggy but it is also tuned that way for drift on a long open track

my friend runs a very very similar car to mine with stock rb25 375hp though different turbo little more responsive and we are same same around the track even though im a little more laggy i have a few more revs on the other end

... if it were me on an rb20 that isnt a serious track car i wouldnt be putting cams or cam gears on and just throw more at suspension or similar to make a better overall car to pick up where the rb20 lacks a little vs other engines

I personally try to go for something different, not to BE different but to enjoy putting my personal touch to things.

I never understood it, for the cost you could get an rb26 and put new pistons and refresh it with basically standard turbos with steel wheels, more power, response and its a 26!

i did rb22 because at that stage it was a simplier plan for what i already had done to the car and wasnt chasing big power at first and a little more reliability with brand new engine rather than a 100K old rb25 + the hassle of changing things over

i use it for drift in wa which is a fast long track and suits quiet well now as plans got a bit more aggressive

hence rb26 with twins wouldnt suit and as per above still would be too much messing around to put new gear in

and dont really feel like going the ramp the stock rb25 up to 400hp and swap a new one each season because they break like alot of guys do here..

now, id build a rb25 engine... then buiding a rb22 suited better and still goes hard and keeps up more than fine

you are right I don't have to, because financially and time wise there isn't a single reason why it makes sense.

swapping in a 25 each season would be cheaper, make more power and require less work. Or for the same amount of money and work you did you cold have just build an rb25/26/30 etc in the first place and had the best of both worlds.

    • This looks great! Awesome to have the 5 speed with an LSD in this. The Recaro's look like SR2's or SR3's. It's a shame they've been retrimmed as they would have looked sweet in their original colours. I think I'd want my agent to be a little more up front and informative too. I've never imported but I reckon it would make me a little nervous, so the more info the better.
    • Thanks for doing that Duncan! Makes you a good person in my books. We don't get kangaroos or wombats here. But we have bats and it's similar. AFAIK it's often the mums with a baby attached that get hit because they drop lower when starting from a tree.     • Yeah we keep on in the dailies, it is pretty poor how many animals get hit and the driver leaves without checking....have saved a couple of little ones over the years. Bit of a gruesome job though, pouches generally need to be cut open because they are so tight and often the joey doesn't realise mum is gone so they are still locked onto the teat. I checked the modules in front of the DS wheel where an oil cooler should go.... There is the radar unit - that can go for race use) One of the 2 HX water pumps, the silver cylinder. That needs to be kept but might be able to be relocated But the bad news, the big computer mounted vertically in front of the wheel (blocking any potential air exit) is the electric steering computer. That is required until/unless i do a hydraulic steering conversion, and in CAD based modern car design it is not like I can just pop a big unit like that somewhere else (plus the loom would be too short anywhere else too). So, the passenger side is OK to clear out (just use a smaller washer reservoir, potentially elsewhere), but the DS no beuno
    • Well, all the best with the new camry It was interesting to hear about the UK process, it is generally a lot more streamlined here with a shipping agent looking after all the import side (noting the exact final price can still be a surprise.....) and I've used a few different brokers on the japan (or US) side, and never had any trouble with any of them....luck of the draw I guess. You mentioned you didn't get the auction sheet (understandable since you bought it from a dealer, not auction), but I always try and get hold of that because they are pretty thorough. I've imported 2x R grade vehicles over the years and both were fine, repairs in Japan are pretty thorough compared to here in Oz.
