after having several cars almost merge into me with my hand on the horn - i've decided that my car horn just doesn't have the impact that it should.

so I was thinking of grabbing one of those "stebel nautilus" ones from ebay. they say the dB is 139dB and up depending on the model you get. i've heard the horn and it sounds like it would get peoples attention

Does anyone know if there is a max dB level that can be used for a horn? or is it a case of, as long as it's not the musical type and constantly on, its all good.

Cheers

The horn on the GTR is very poor, almost apologetic... I've tossed up the idea of getting one of those aftermarket ones for a while now. The Clio has a great horn, as do a lot of Euro cars, have thought about checking out a wrecker for a second hand one, but those stebel ones seem pretty cheap...

This is what i found for NSW not sure whether it applies to the whole country. EDIT: Maybe you should call the EPA or someone like that and get it from the horses mouth.

Noise from motor vehicle horns

Horns cannot be installed or used if they are louder than the level in clause 21 of the Regulation. This level is 120 decibels for noise made up of a single non-varying loudness and pitch or 85 decibels in any other case.

Police and Emergency Service vehicles are exempt.

Horns should be used as traffic warning devices only and not as a means of relieving driver stress or frustration.

Haha yeah... This thread inspired me to research it a bit more.. It came on my car from japan..

I found it on google... It's actually a cool bit of kit..

Has two modes controlled by a switch... The box advertises the as:

"PA!!!!"

And...

"PAAAAaaaaan"

Haha basically u flick switch and it turns it into a tapered sound like a train

You need to get one of these. Maybe get one with a carbon fiber warp and mount it to the pillar? Perhaps put a neon light inside it?

If I get cut up by some hoon I find it therapeutic to imagine the rubber end is the guys scrotum? I can work out my rage by squeezing and twisting it, whilst simultaneously making an aural expression of my displeasure. :)

Someone cut in front of me this afternoon, and I actually went through the mental process of

*idiot*

*I'll horn him*

*actually, that's right, I'm in the GTR, this horn is p*ss poor so it's going to sound pathetic*

and I let it go.

Get a Vuvuzela...

I actually used one of these out the back window of the old mans Mitusbishi express. Travelling back from the Bathurst 1000 on the Bells line of road. Nearly got cut off by a silly woman, so blew the f**k out of one of these at her and she broke so hard she locked up the front wheels!!

i bought a set of air horns for my silvia because i was sick of getting cut off by tards in traffic.

anyways, at first the two horns weren't that loud but i had the brilliant idea of only using one horn. so double the air into that horn would make it louder and it made a huge difference. It's quite a lot louder then a normal "beep" horn.

I was thinking about buying another air compressor to increase the volume even more.

Was the biggest disappointment after buying my GTR.

First time I hit the horn ( I use it a lot in Japan with the amount of idiots on the road) I wanted to crawl under a rock and hide.

My misso's Jimmny's horn was way,way louder.

Not anymore. Change of horn was my first mod.

I always love winding up the staff in Super Autobacs with their air horn display.

Bunch of horns all wired up with test buttons. Press them all at once and its a hell of noise and staff come running....sumimasen

    • When you pulled it off, there is no signs of blown head gasket? Is it possible you have some other issues going on? Possible cracked blocked? Or do you think it's straight up lifting the head? Did you check what the head was torqued to before pulling it down (To see if possibly they're stretching, or starting to break threads out etc)?
    • Seems like a decent result for a modded JZX110. They are bulky in comparison to the 100 and 90 models (which I'd prefer myself) but they are getting very few and far between here in JP these days. Thanks for the detailed review and the import process into the UK. I also have a car which I'm hoping to export from Japan at some stage so it's good to know if someone from the UK was interested in it. By the way the corrosion underneath is par for the course for cars which were located in/near the mountains or along the Japan sea coastline. They get huge amounts of snow every winter and the sodium chloride is used on the roads. Many cars have some kind of rubber like treatment underneath but they tend to limit it to the wheel arches underbody and fuel tank. Suspension arms and sub-frames will have similar corrosion to your JZX110 which is a common sight. See it all the time and car dealers here generally don't even mention it unless asked.
    • If the sound goes away when you clutch in, the 1.5/2 way diffs are just shit, and you are a normal person. The diff is likely "fine" but driving at anything under 30kmh is a violent horrible experience. It would be exaggerated with solid diff bushings and subframe bushings if you have those.
