well yeah the HKS and trust kits are good (though be aware the base model trust LS kits are now made in china). so are the blitz and ARC kits. but they are more expensive. the basic chinese intercoolers work 'ok' but they do have some negatives when compared to the better products. they still do the same basic job though and are much cheaper of course. where they sometimes fall over is with poor fitment. so if you're getting a workshop to fit it sometimes the initial cost saving gets eaten up by bigger install costs.

Nah, I want to do a DIY jobby. More fun :) and cheaper. What power can these cheapies handle in general or is it a waste of money to do a "little" jump to one of them from my smic.

Are there any cheap ones better than other cheap ones? Is I.T.L IFR intercoolers any good? (I could not find much info on them on google).

I like the sound of that one since it may fit better.

What about scarles intercoolers, anyone used them?

cheers guys, I appreciate any info.

I am leaning toward a cheaper one.

High peoples,

I just bought an evo 4 intercooler and pipes (except top pipe) off trademe for $220, quite good condition. Reason I purchased was because my tuner said it would be an excellent upgrade and can manipulate the pipes to fit the smic ones. Apparently the intercooler will fit without cutting the bumper or moving the bonnet stay.

Could someone help me with some photos of an evo intercooler setup, someone thought they could give me and evo 3 one. Just needing to know how it goes. cheers.

I'll put some pics up after i have it installed for others.

Buy the time you have paid your tuner to make brackets- modify pipe work- hose- clamps- fittings etc then the extra labour to mount it, you'll have spent alot more than buying a stealth cooling pro return kit for just jap for exactily the same results.

I am doing the work myself.

Do you have a tig? can you weld alloy?

Even if you do (I seriously doubt it) the time it takes you to faaark arsee about fitting the cooler, brackets, fabing up the pipe work etc... not to mention buying some more mandrel sections of pipe etc you will have spent the same money and spent far more time getting somthing to fit-

I'll put it to you like this- I have the skills and tools to fabricate alloy pipe in 3mm.... and I just bought a jjr return flow stealth cooler kit for my stag. No mess, little fuss and a proven performer.

But hey- whatever floats your boat mate. Next time you ask this forum for help.... try listening???

Others tell me it will be a better than chinese intercooler and it is smaller so will not have the hassle of cutting bumpers etc. I am also told the pipes can be manipulated to fit the smic ones.

If this is true it will be a better result than buying a big chinese kit and apparently easy (of which i will have to find out). So I have competing opinions from different people about what I should do or not do and I thought there would be people on here who have done similar things who could help out, but obviously not.

I dont know what the worry is with cutting the bumper and REO bar, NZ doesnt have quite the anal laws over it. And even if they do, they arent enforced. And so long as you do it carfully and dont hack the shit to pieces noone will notice.

The chinese ones would work find. Plenty of 300rwkw Skylines i know of using them.

The Blitz CS would be what id buy now. I have the Blitz LM in my R33 in NZ. Beautiful piece of kit.

Seeing as you bought the EVO intercooler, post up some pics of the install. Interested to see how it fits.

Edit: And the reason theres noone on here thats dont anything similar to help you out, is because out of the hundreds of people that pose the same question, they get the same answer. Dont waste your time, get one thats for the car. They end up doing that, and never looking back :) GL However

Lol, aren't forums just awesome for direct info haha.

The very first thing i thought when i read this was why you need an fmic? Here in aus they're defectable, on my old r34 i actually had a cop look for 1. a pod, 2. a shiny new turbo and 3. an fmic, whilst under the bonnet. I had none of them and was on my way in no time.

Are you doing trackwork? Or regularly hitting the drag strip etc?

The advantage of an fmic, as you said in your OP, is that it keeps intake temps cool when you repeatedly run the car hard. On the road you don't really need one in normal applications for sub 200rwkw. Did you ever consifder upgrading to an r34 smic? They're bigger and better, not sur eon the cost but there are a few diy's on here.

Also what makes the Chinese ones so much worse? Are they that much worse? Does it make any difference <300rwkw? I'd have thought if they're made of very similar material, with similar thickness of the cooling element and similar dimensions that they'd be fairly similar, maybe a bit less reliable? Do they maybe not cool quite as well and not support higher hp?

I'm just wondering why the bigger names charge 2k more?

As everyone has said above you wasted your money and it will end up costing you more than a JJR cooler or maybe even a blitz return flow as they go for around 800 mark which is not to bad now. You will have to cut the front bar it is very unlikely to fit without cutting as the bars are made to be close to fans and in regards to you worring about the quality Just jap ones are not shity like other chinese cores they are half decent im running 307kw with one no problem back to back runs.

I am not hitting the drag strip, but I do want to go to a track sometime. This little smic is struggling with keeping the intake cool and is causing it took knock slightly whic the Z32 ecu picks up causes a dreadful flat spot.

I was told that the flow of a chinese is more restrictive than other cores. I was also told that the r34 smic was a little fiddly aswell to fit to an R33.

Well, if I have made the wrong decision this is what i have got and I hope to finish what I started. It will be a learning curve :D

In NZ, because my car has airbags apparently and i will be going further than a 20% power increase and I will have to get a $400 certification so I was not wanting to spend too much on the intercooler. The fmic apparently will interfere with the airbag system ?! lol

A good condition evo4 fmic was a heck of a lot cheaper than a chinese one. I will need to look for a pipe/couple of pipes and joiners in order to fit. I'll post up a pick of the pipes and intercooler I have and see what you guys recommend if you are bothered to help me other than suggest I do something that I have already made a decision about. I've got it now and I am not really keen to sell it again to buy another kit.

Ok so you decided (after asking all of us in the first place) not to take our advice and you bought an evo intercooler anyway.... no worries- personal choise.

To help you get started...

This is what your going to need (roughly):

- 5x 90deg alloy mandrel bends

- 2x 45deg alloy mandrel bends

- 4' straight pipe

- 8" of silicone hose

- 2x silicone hose reducers?

- 8x hose clamps (get good ones)

- 6' of 1x1/4 alloy strap (brackets)

- 6x nuts, bolts, pairs of washers

- cut the front bar

- cut the reo (probably)

- get a fab place to weld up 5-7 joints

Good luck to you... and post the pic's up when it's all in. I've honestly never seen an evo cooler in a 33 before.

Cheers

Justin

here is the cooler. its got the pipe and joiners to the left that will point straight over the top of the intercooler (I'll take the soft bend off of it). the one on the right I think will be in the general direction of the original smic pipes so hopefully the won't be too hard to hook up.

the top part of the left pipe narrows to it looks like a 2" which is smaller than the intake and outtake points on the cooler, is that a problem? I thought it would be a bit of bottle neck.

Dude like everyone else has said over and over again, go sell it and buy an off the shelf kit.

Chinese coolers don't flow much? For the power you're after it will be fine. What you'll find is your piping work might end up being the restriction.

this is what you are after, black and stealth and super cheap........... oh did I mention ZERO headaches in fitting it yourself too..... :D

http://www.justjap.com/store/product.php?productid=19944&cat=339&page=1

i know you are in NZ but surely you can source one..........

im with the other guys, you could paint any cooler kit black for stealthiness. and by you driving a skyline your are an instant target for the cops anyway. there is an hdi kit on trademe for 600nzd, surely it will work out nearly the same dollar wise, and they are much better than most Chinese ones (correct me if im wrong). on the flipside though guys you have to remember that 500 aud is roughly 670nzd at the moment, and add roughly 100aud for shipping which equates to nearly 800nzd ohmy.gif.

Hey there, These guys know what they are talking about with these chinese intercoolers...Sell your evo one and get one that will save you money and not look like an eyesore on your car.

I drive a 260rwkw R34 with a Redline performance intercooler which from memory I purchased for $370 including the piping joiners and evrything. It was about 3 hours (beers included) to install.

check out the Redline performance website for more information about them, they are a nice quality kit and there was very little trimming of the front bar. I even had my car certified with the reo trimmed and he couldnt have cared less.

    • Nice, thanks for sharing your progress....that's a pretty long list you are putting into it!

    • Morning all, I have an RB25DET Neo that's in need of a rebuild. Will need new pistons etc due to detonation damage. TLDR - recommended engine shops for RB rebuild.
    • Gday Thought it was about time I started a build thread! As expected this project has snowballed into a huge financial liability, but unless you’re strong willed and responsible, it’s not a surprise. Background -  My first turbo car was an R32 GTS-4, got my full license and then totalled my Au Falcon a week later, so while trying to sell my RMZ450 dirtbike to buy another car a bloke offered to swap the R32 which at the time I felt like I was ripped off but looking back and seeing prices of those now ($40kish) it was a good deal, I didn’t know enough about these cars to appreciate what I had so sold it before the RB20 blew up. Between here and there, out of 12 cars I’ve owned the note worthy ones are a V8 Lexus SC400 (soarer), a couple of XR6 Turbos and my beloved S15 which I had for about 3 years, picked it up for $12500, repairable write off but she was fine, gun metal grey/pewter and bone stock/unmolested until I got my hands on it. Ended up spending about the value of the car and 280kw, 2 demerit points by the time I got defected and sold it for $14500 (also $40kish in today’s market, rip) Fast forward to the present day, I’m in a much better position financially and daily an MQ Triton (great cars, pipe down Ranger Bois), I cruised marketplace and car sales for a few months looking for another R32, the best deal I could find was an absolute rust bucket half finished project for $12000, until this R33 popped up in Port Macquarie for $18k - unregistered and barely running but decent shape, kept an eye on it for a few weeks and the price steadily dropped, $16k then $15k then $14k, that was the point where I was like shit someone’s gonna snatch this up! It was owned by a young bloke who had big plans but him and his missus just had a baby so smartest move financially for them but big gain for me. So 2 days later I’m towing a car trailer to pick this thing up. Roughly 2 weeks and $3500 later I’m cruising around Newcastle in my beat up R33 all smiles and dose noises! It only needed some basic shit to get it going, coil packs and air flow meter, electrical stuff and all fluids changed, 158k kms and running pretty good, nice smooth engine after oil and coolant flush - when I say coolant I mean it had been filled up with tap water, every gallery and heater element was filled with rust, 8-9 flushes later and still had brown liquid coming out but she’ll be right. The car was painted R34 Bayside Blue at some point but whether it was a cheap job or just not looked after is anyone’s guess, clear coat flaking like sausage roll.  Was rethinking my choices and contemplating life, had it up for sale for $22k - still cheaper than any registered R33 but got little interest, next minute I had an opportunity at work - 6 months overseas for good money, so that was a no brainer, fast forward again and here we are with a 50% finished project.
