I've been meaning to do this for a long time so here it is...

My name is Russell and some people on here may already know me. I've been in the SAU scene for about 5 years now.

I bought my R32 in 2005 and it has gone through numerous small changes over the years.

It started off with a very good list of mods when it arrived from Japan

It had:

Cusco coil overs, 33 GTSt gearbox, spool diff and the engine had HKS 2530, PFC, GTR injectors, Tomei cams and all the usual bolt ons to make a respectable 200rwkw’s.

At the time for me this was huge power. I did lots of DECA’s with SAU Vic, a few drift days and a couple of track days.

I then added R34 GTT brakes, race seat and pretty much flogged the guts out of it. For a couple of years.

And……. then I met a bunch of guys that encouraged me to go for more power. This team consists of Matt (Femno), Tim (Drift SX), Campbell (REAMED), Dean (deanc), Mark (mark33gtst) and a few others. They all had big power so the idea and it rubbed off on me…

So to make the most out of my RB20 we boosted it to 1.56 bar ~23psi

This tune was done by ACE WORKSHOP + DYNO and the results speak for themselves. With what was a restrictive turbo setup we certainly got the most from it and it has held together for years!

The best times I got with that setup:

Sandown: 1:24.26

Winton: 1:34.98

Philip Island: 1:48.00

Eastern Creek (SL 2010) 1:47.32

Oran Park (SL 2009) 1:24.31

I also took out DECA overall champion in 2010

Yeah it struggled up top but it had awesome mid range with the cams kicking in with boost at the same time. I just changed my driving style to upshift earlier.

BTW the above was just an intro. The real build that is underway will be posted up when i get a chance.

Few more pics from the last few years.

In 2009 I did Superlap at Oran park. It was a big step up for me in terms of competition. It was my first introduction to TIME ATTACK!

Oran park is an awesome track and I was way out of my league for that sort of event. Dispite this it was the start of my love for time attack.

I also won a set of Advan RS wheels that year at a $10 raffle :)

Later in 2009 I did the ATC with Troy (Roy) and again that raised the bar with what this car was capable of.

Also in 2009 I stacked it at winton at a drift day. I got it repaired and that was the end of it's drifting days. I wanted it to be pure time attack...

I got that all fixed and continued to race it for the rest of 2009 and 2010

2010 superlap is when I realised that I wanted to do a big build and change the setup.

I'd had a lot of success with the car with that setup. I was reaching the limit of the car where I couldn't drive the thing any faster.

Seeing all the crazy cars at 2010 SL made me want to spend the money on my car to pick it up to the next level where my driving will again be the limiting factor. Not the car. The part of time attack I enjoy the most is improving my driving. In 2010 at EC I had enough sessions to squeeze out a 1:47.32 with a set of year old AO50's and some good advise from Troy :)

2011 I plan to go faster :)

So this is where the build begins...

I started parts collecting over 2010 and Jan 2011 we started the work.

Parts list so far:

G4 356mm brakes

TE37 Superlaps 18x10.5 +15. Yes that's right 10.5in on a 32 GTSt!!!

Standard S1 RB25

6 boost T4 manifold

Garrett GTX3076r with twin scroll 1.06 rear housing

HKS 38mm wastegate

Full 3.5in exhaust custom made by Mat

Jun copy plenum

OS Giken triple plate clutch

Surge tank with Bosch 044 pump

Top feed injectors (900cc or something cc so I can go E85 later)

52mm ebay radiator

PowerFC

Defi gauges

GTR BOV

GTR front guards flared

GTR front bar.

My good mate Matthew Femino (Chewy) from ACE WORKSHOP + DYNO is the guy that is making it all happen. I've been doing as much of this as I can while he does the hard stuff. He really is a master when it comes to fabrication and making it all come together.

This car will basically all be done in house with only small amounts of work being done elsewhere. This includes a "CHEWY TUNE" on the ACE WORKSHOP Dyno. We're expecting to be able to pull about 330rwkw's with the setup but most likely be going for a 'safe' 280-300rwkw's for lots of track time.

Paint will be done James at Patti panels in Campbellfield when the time comes.

I'll let the photo's do the talking...

are you sticking with the RB20?

did you get brake fade with the R34 brakes?

and does the wing actually make a difference on the track?

great build!

Hey mate.

Nah I'm going to RB25.

Brakes were fine with the power I had. Just had to make sure I had plenty of pad and bled the brakes every track day. It's was probably the most you'd wanna push them though...

The wing is definitely noticable on tracks like Eastern Creek and Philip Island. Don't think it does much at Winton or Sandown. Maybe turn 6 at Sandown...

Look forward to your progress Russ, you were very quick on the old setup...

Nice list of mods too, how the hell are you going to fit those rims on the rear????

Apparently, he is going to use hydralic ram (pretty sure his panel beater will do the work), I reckon he'll need GTR guards or widebody.

Russ, you know what I think of the 'transformation'

Yeah get the porta power onto them. If it all turns bad then I'll buy GTR guards but trying not to if I can help it.

If anyone knows of a fibreglass bolt on that's wider than GTR and not a 'widebody' as such please let me know...

    • I mean it's a bit late to say "This won't have any tangible effect and it is not worth spending more than about three seconds on it, please just enjoy the car" But I said it anyway. Does the pod actually get any airflow in that position behind a bumper like that?
    • Hey guys - apologies for digging this up. Has this website been shutdown or is the outage temporary?
    • So, went shopping at Just Jap for things that might work for the intake  After some trial fitting there I ended up with a 3" x 45° silicone bend, a 3" x 300mm alloy straight, and a humped joiner, some minor trimming will be required to shorten some of the stuff, but nothing that is beyond my "ham fisted" skills The guy at Just Jap was most helpful as we had all sorts of joiners,  bends and stuff out trial fitting  Laying it out above the stuff in there it seems everything will fit nicely, and looking at it, it is probably the way I should have been looking at doing it from the beginning, probably..... In the end it is a front bar off job anyway to remove the original stuff behind the front bar that is taking up the required realestate needed, so maybe a Thursday or Friday job And because I'm a hopeless consumer, I grabbed some new steel wheel nuts, the current ones are a spline drive type with a "security" socket, that somehow someone keeps misplacing, the new ones are a basic black steel 17mm hex socket In other news: I just did my "final" tax return, I am now officially a old retired veteran pensioner, and I'm milking the system for all it's worth,  life is good
    • I hadn't thought about the variable power steering assist. Presumably, it will always be the same level of assist as you get in an S14. The R32/3/4 are either helliishly heavy (at low speeds) if the solenoid is not powered at all, or hellishly too light (at high speed) if it is powered all the time. I presume that it is PWM controlled on those cars. I hadn't thought about the S cars not having variable assist. ugh. What crappy plebby cars they must be!
    • Hmm yeah that is a good point. It looks like it'll just bolt in with no real issue besides maybe the bushings being different. My other concern was that 2 pin plug that I assume is used in some way to control the rack solenoid depending on the speed signal from the ecu. The DMAX rack doesn't even have that plug though so, don't think it'll matter. Might just order the rack and see how it goes. Will update this when I figure something out
