Today i was pulled over in Mosman and defected for my exaust. The cop was an absolute prick! iv been pulled over so manny times and i have a perfect record no cop has ever said anythign about my exaust or anything.

This dood though i was sus because i was quote "avoiding him in the back streets" i told him this was the way home... idiot

anyways he tells me that "Anything that isnt stock is illegal......" ummmm Im pritty sure this is bullshit. Can some 1 help me out here ?

so that means that the 2 skylines and the lancer that passed me when i was pulled over are all gonna get defected......

The exaust is just your typical Skyline canon 3 inch from the turbo back not overly loud im pritty sure it will be under 90 decibals.. i told him that it would be legal n he told me not to step in the fire.......... what a poof!

He said its a $125 fine for just having it on my car.... and im gonna have to go get it tested by some 1 when i get the defect notice...

this DOES not seem right.. Can some 1 shed some light on whats happened.

Im going to challenge the fine. thanks.

I would be inclided to go to the Sargent at his station and talk to him about it.

If you go in there with a good attitude (which it sounds like your being pretty sensible ie. no previous problems when pulled over) looking resectable, and explain the situation he may clear it for you.

The comment of 'don't step in the fire' leads me to think the officer has an attitude problem, any normal person that deals with the public would never say a thing like that.

Good luck.

I have been followed home from willoughby to crows nest a few times.. Its allways a bit sketchy..

Alot of the highway patrol guys have a real attitude problem, its like they have it in their head that we modify our cars as a personal vandetta against them.

My suggestion is dont panic, just go get the exhaust tested and engineered. If its to loud, get a silencer or something. If not then take it to court with the correct documentation and you will get off.

Whilst some of the police officers act like immature brats, you still have the law on your side if your not doing the wrong thing. Just prove to the people that its legal, and you wont have any issues.

When I finally finish my cars build up I want to have everything engineered so if a police officer wants to be silly, I can show them documentation.

Never thought mosman was bad. Just dont cross paths with Kuringai Highway Patrol.

As said, some officers take it upon themselves to be bastards, theres nothing you can do about it unfortunately. Regarding your exhaust I highly doubt its under 90db.

If you are pulled over and hassled when you havent committed an offence, feel free to ask for the officers badge number. If he doesnt give it to you, demand it. If he still refuses to give it to you hes in alot of trouble, write down his rego and head straight to the nearest police station.

I doubt its a fine for having the exhaust on your car period, more so if its not ADR compliant.

I hear of these idle threats of defects and fines in the mail regularly and most of the time it never happens, more so just the officer acting high and mighty.

Dont stress about it

Thanks jay and carlo.

But is it true that, Any exaust other than stock is illegal..... He was really pushing that point.

It seems wrong that i get fined for having a different exhaust, when the cop dosnt even know if its over the limit..

shouldent it be. You get tested if its over the limit you get fined....

Talking to the sarg’ might help, but I think you will find that the majority of mod’s on a vehicle registered in NSW are classed as illegal, that’s why all mods have to have an engineering certificate to accompany them. (Engineers can be found on the RTA website http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/heavyvehicles/do...s/vsi/vsi15.pdf) I agree with Jay95R33, I think the cop was having a very bad day (maybe a period) and is probably sitting at home enjoying a donut or two hoping you wont make an issue out of it (harasment). I have been pulled over many times and the cops just walk around your car, have a sticky beak inside, then say please count to ten slowly. I'm sure they get paid extra every time they pull over a Skyline...

yea thats the main thing here, they can say anything they want is illegal or not compliant! its up to you to prove them wrong! honestly i dont think talking to his seargent is going to do any good! i mean if you were his seargent and someone came to you and complained about the way in which a police officer under your command defected your car or spoke to you, would you take any notice!

carlo is right, if you change somthing on your car that may get you into trouble with the fuzz, then get it engineered or get written documentation for it, so when he says your exhaust is illegal you can say to him, officer i have written documentation of the validity of (enter Modification here) and theres nothing he can do about it!

treat him with respect even if he does return the favour and save urself the hassle!

Thanks jay and carlo.

....

If that were the case, then 90% of all cars on the roads would be defected - who hasn't replaced the system the manufacturer fitted because it fell to pieces?
If that were the case, then 90% of all cars on the roads would be defected - who hasn't replaced the system the manufacturer fitted because it fell to pieces?

90% of all cars on the road? that's a little much don't you think? I'd say 75% are stock.

i have run into the bad mosman cop......i have his name and cop badge. and i have 3 other people that have been attacked or abused by this same cop. we live in the area and every time he sees us on the road we get $$$ of fines... he targets our cars... one night he was in an undercover car and he overtook 6 other skylines(i was in a group of about 9) and pulled myself over. just for a rbt and a defect. i was not speeding i was not doing anything that would stick me out from the R33`s and R34`s. he is just a prick.

ut he will have his day...

Don't worry too much about it... It really is quite an inconsequential thing. It's not like you've lost your licence or anything.

So what to do now? Basically the officer has deemed your exhaust illegal. But you think that it's under 90dB. (I highly doubt that, btw) So goto an EPA testing station, and get them to test how loud your exhaust is. Make sure the test is done under legislated conditions. They are very specific about what RPM the test is to be done at (don't let them rev it to redline) and what angle and distance their microphone has to sit near to your exhaust.

If you're right, you're right. If you're exhaust is illegal, then fix it. It's not the end of the world!!! :(

can you record a police officers conversation with yourself?

I have a feature on my mobile phone which can record 3 mins of audio. Always handy incase they abuse you. Then you have proof haha! :(

Yes. Either you or the Police Officer is allowed to tape the conversation after informing the other party that they will be doing so.

Be careful though, as sticking a tape recorder/mobile phone in their face can quickly turn a calm cop who was just going to give you a warning into an agressive and angry cop.

i believe the reason why *any* modified exhaust is illegal is because it alters the emmissions of the vehicle - and NOT ONLY the sound...

getting an engineers certificate qualifying it as meeting epa regulations will make the aforementioned null and void - this is my understanding of the rules as set out by the RTA.

as posted, that link shows approved RTA mechanics that can provide valid engineers certificates clearing your car of any future defects.

basically, if you modify your car you run the risk of being defected, given you dont have the appropriate documents. we live in a modern society - we should lead by example and appreciate and respect these kinds of EPA laws that will save our environment and earth's future.

now, who can install my screamer pipe? :(

Well the police obviously believe they are justified in targeting performance cars because a large percentage of people drive like they are THE Drift King or whatever when they are in their cars. Police arent out there to spoil ur fun (well not most anyway) they are out there to protect us.

BUT all said they should go spend there time on proper stuff like Drunk Drivers, Burglars and bloody rioters (in Redfern or where ever).

Why don't they target all those 'souped' up commodores that are like 20 years old almost falling apart and pollute to hell with the "comprising for something" V8 engines. Or those stoopid drivers in there Excels or some other piece of shit (you know the ones the - "I am so cool with my window wound down, while my Spice Girls CD is on full blast!"), that think just coz they put a wing on it makes there car FAST! and allows them to swerve in and out cutting everyone off.

Target real criminals, not revenue raisers.

Cheers

    • What 1.5 way? There's no such thing really as a 1.5 way, just different ways of explaining 2 ways with different ramp rates. HOWEVER. In any driving in a straight line your 1.5 or 2 or 1.7 way should have no clunking at all. With the clutch fully depressed the diff should be silent (unless it's welded but I'm assuming it's not). Something aint right here.
    • Clutch is a spec brand, new clutch system,( PP, flywheel, friction disc, etc. pull type) installed 100 miles ago, with no problems.
    • looking for some help and maybe some insight on others experience with a new LSD. R34 GT ran and drove beautifully, but always alot of grip loss due to the open R200 rear end, so I just installed a new 1.5 LSD way into the stock open R200 for a ER34. Simple. Everything seemed right. I test drove for the first time this weekend. as I started to back out the garage the first time slowly with tires straight it sounded and felt like I had a loose or half disconnected drive shaft...that was clucking around loose and shaking entire vehicle, and making it feel like the trans clutch was spontaneously slipping then grabbing very roughly while just letting out pedal slowly. I backed it out went to pull forward with the same noise, shake and slip grab feeling with hesitation, I turned the tires to back out more and then pulled ahead some same thing but worst because of added wheel resistance (which that I expected) puzzled … pulling it back in checking everything over and finding nothing wrong, I tried it the next day. same thing, couldn’t believe how it shook everything again making a terrible noise and making it feel like the trans clutch was slipping and grabbing, but I got it out of garage into the driveway, got it straight, drove forward and then reveres a few times in a straight line everything shaking , causing what felt like clutch slip and grab every time, sounded like right behind front driver tire and I could feel it in the floor board with my feet,... worst right when beginning to let clutch pedal out to engage slightly, shuttering and sounding terrible along the way…I managed to slowly get down the road, babying it the whole way, once I was rolling (out of 1st) seemed to be better and between shifts, then clutch felt closer to normal…not slip/ grab etc., but back down to any stop, straight road or turning, same thing. Made no difference if all tires were straight or if I was turning. All other gauge read out correct. with in 2 miles as planned I reached the empty parking lot and performed the break in procedure that came with lsd, essentially to drive in a figure 8 a bunch.  Did this, binding chattering, and shaking the car the whole way. I drove it back home seemed somewhat normal once I was in straight line and past 10 mph or so, and I know it will “bind” on corners and cause some tires squeal when turning especially from a stop, but when I begin to move it still causes what feels like the trans clutch to slip and jerk badly as well as shaking the entire car, and sounds terrible, that I didn’t expect. I used the fluid they supplied with LSD kit and did the breaking, planning to change fluid as they suggest after breaking, but wondering will it get smoother or less aggressive with use? maybe a 1.5 is just too aggressive for normal road driving?   I have a LSD that I put in my 71 cuda when I restored it, with amazing smooth , quite yet effective results. Different style LSD but that ones a joy to drive. maybe expecting too much from this R200?
