from memory dont u have an os giken quad plate clutch???? not the most friendly clutch.

ive got the same box but use nismo coppermix comp clutch n have never had a problem, launched several times at 8000rpm +

still not a single problem, car is driven everyday

twoogle used same box to run 9s with 500kw n only using twin plate clutch.

my suggestion is to ditch your quad plate clutch

you can do a mix of the OS box and AGY bits.

DJR81, they have their own double cone synchros. they also do various different close ratio gear sets too just like OS Giken.

I have bought and sold a couple over the years. good boxes. they even make a clutch bearing and pivot oiling system too!

clutch11.gif

ratio choice:

version 1

1= 2,611

2=1,733

3=1,289

4=1,000

5 =0,752

OR (standard ratios I think?):

1 3,214

2 1,925

3 1,302

4 1,000

5 0,752

They have some optional 5th gear choices too:

5 0,842

5 0,826

5 0,800

version 2 close ratio box is:

1 1,903

2 1,476

3 1,186

4 1,000

5 choice of the 3 above.

Matty if you haven't already bought a PPG do it. I've had both the OS in my Silvia and PPG dog, I broke two selectors before I bought the PPG and it was the best thing I ever did.

The OS gears are strong but like everyone has mentioned here, rely on factory Nissan parts too, I think you and I have similar driving styles.

As for servicing them, once you get the hang of driving and not crunching them everywhere they are more reasonable than they myths that linger around them given what your use is, street/occasional track.

PJ

i've not tried their skyline stuff. a mate had a modena gear set in another car and it seemed fine but my experience with them in skylines is zero.

the ppg is good but by the time you get new centre plate, billet shafts, billet selectors etc it becomes pretty expensive and of course it still has limitations of being in the factory casing with the factory layout and size limitations etc. my feeling these days is for a road car you either spend a little (good standard box or something like a OS set at most) or for a track car just got straight to the hollinger. it's a lot to cop in one hit but they are fantastic and have a lot of benefits. plus if you need to sell it one day the resale is pretty strong too!

If I am reading it right the AGY "full monty" is 900,000 YEN?

The syncromesh helical PPG gearset is reasonable at $5-6k but then add billet selectors, bigger input shaft... labour. You are close to $10k already!

yeah it's around $10K but you get full 5 gear close ratio box (version 2) with choice of 5th gear ratio from 3 options, ALL gears come with the upgraded dual cone synchros and you also get an upgraded input shaft (can even get it with the hollinger type spline if you want) and the upgraded billet centre plate is included too. and that price is fully built and installed in casing. for other options like ppg and os etc you need to budget at least $1000 for assembley and that's assuming all the other bits in your box (bearings etc) don't need replacing too.

for a full dual synchro box, with full 5 speed close ratio, upgraded gears and upgraded input shaft all assembled ready to go it's not too bad. still not cheap by any means but it's probably the nicest box option for a road car that does just the odd track day.

you can get the basic version 1 dual cone synchro set with close ratio gears in 1-3 (standard 4th and 5th gear) for half that, but then if you want the optional 5th gear that's another $1,000, billet centre plate, another $1,000, and upgraded input shaft is another $1,000 too. so by the time you buy it and upgrade those 3 bits it's more like $8K. their prices are full installed though too (you exchange your old box).

their stuff is very nice though.

Input shaft is only good for 800hp max if your lucky and if you dont baby it, it will snap !

I know of quite a few street and race cars that have had this and have snapped the input shaft launching it.

It is not designed for drag launches but strictly circuit and street driving!! It is definitely not a drag option box.

But it shifts smooth as silk on the track or street compared to a box with just an OS set.

I have a combo box of the OS gearsets, OS uprated input shaft and AGY double con still sitting in my house in Japan and another box getting built as a spare.

AGY have designed an uprated input shaft but still OS is stronger.

yeah i've had one mix and match with SS690 synchros and the OS 1-3 gearset.

for sure it's not a drag box and not really drag suitable ratios (except maybe the newer v2 ratios) but as I said I'd recommend it for the average 95% street car with the odd 'fun' track day thrown in. not for a competition car. for comp circuit or drag car you may as well go dog box like PJ has or step up again to the hollinger. or hell for a drag car get a 2speed powerglide or a liberty airshifted auto box.

Can you use their syncros with any gear set?

I doubt it more so that the owner Koizumi is a bit of a grump at the best of times and wouldnt want to stuff around with anything thats not in Japan.

Richard these have lunched in high power street / circuit cars in Japan launching hard. One was just over 680hp.

I've personally seen 2 shafts snapped thats why went the OS shaft.

Most people in the know in Japan wont use the shaft if chasing over 650 at atw and go uprated OS shaft.

Costs a lot less to build new box when your earning yen.

By the way where did you get your AGY/OS box from ?

yep, you're right dave. S3 boxes have double synchros on 2/3. the AGY kit adds it to 1st, 4th and 5th as well.

Mark, my AGY box was bought from...... AGY. :) long time ago. maybe 2004.

Good you sold it as the old boxes input shaft was pretty fragile.

Still ok for general street and track but hard launches they snapped fairly easily.

Uprated ones he does now handle more power but still best is the OS/AGY combo.

I love driving the AGY boxes just they just shift so nice.

    • looking for some help and maybe some insight on others experience with a new LSD. R34 GT ran and drive beautifully, but always alot of grip loss due to the open R200 rear end, so I just installed a new 1.5 LSD way into the stock open R200 for a ER34. Simple. Everything seemed right. I test drove for the first time this weekend. as I started to back out the garage the first time slowly with tires straight it sounded and felt like I had a loose or half disconnected drive shaft...that was clucking around loose and shaking entire vehicle, and making it feel like the trans clutch was spontaneously slipping then grabbing very roughly while just letting out pedal slowly. I backed it out went to pull forward with the same noise, shake and slip grab feeling with hesitation, I turned the tires to back out more and then pulled ahead some same thing but worst because of added wheel resistance (which that I expected) puzzled … pulling it back in checking everything over and finding nothing wrong, I tried it the next day. same thing, couldn’t believe how it shook everything again making a terrible noise and making it feel like the trans clutch was slipping and grabbing, but I got it out of garage into the driveway, got it straight, drove forward and then reveres a few times in a straight line everything shaking , causing what felt like clutch slip and grab every time, sounded like right behind front driver tire and I could feel it in the floor board with my feet,... worst right when beginning to let clutch pedal out to engage slightly, shuttering and sounding terrible along the way…I managed to slowly get down the road, babying it the whole way, once I was rolling (out of 1st) seemed to be better and between shifts, then clutch felt closer to normal…not slip/ grab etc., but back down to any stop, straight road or turning, same thing. Made no difference if all tires were straight or if I was turning. All other gauge read out correct. with in 2 miles as planned I reached the empty parking lot and performed the break in procedure that came with lsd, essentially to drive in a figure 8 a bunch.  Did this, binding chattering, and shaking the car the whole way. I drove it back home seemed somewhat normal once I was in straight line and past 10 mph or so, and I know it will “bind” on corners and cause some tires squeal when turning especially from a stop, but when I begin to move it still causes what feels like the trans clutch to slip and jerk badly as well as shaking the entire car, and sounds terrible, that I didn’t expect. I used the fluid they supplied with LSD kit and did the breaking, planning to change fluid as they suggest after breaking, but wondering will it get smoother or less aggressive with use? maybe a 1.5 is just too aggressive for normal road driving?   I have a LSD that I put in my 71 cuda when I restored it, with amazing smooth , quite yet effective results. Different style LSD but that ones a joy to drive. maybe expecting too much from this R200?

    • Hello!  i just finished manual swaping my r34 skyline with a r33 rb20de box(RB71C)box  When the car is running it squeaks crazy loud and it was smoking from the gearbox area. The gearbox is fine it was tested. The clutch slave cylinder seems like it doesn't fully releases the clutch. I want to ask if this noise is from the throw out bearing or could it be the clutch assembly or disk att.xFliq87Gzw6kImKBVqDebXkj0fBqymk0JaYeP3_3SlM.mp4
