Sorry for another one of those bitching threads about what's good and how much will this cost bla bla.

I have an R34 GT-T Sedan (Sadly an Auto, but I will convert it to a manual when I have time and money again) coming from Tokyo and it will be here soon. I have a bunch of money to blow on mods for it and was looking for recommendations and some experience. I'm from Perth so I was considering X-speed as they are close to home.

I was looking into getting:

- Full turbo back 3" exhaust system

- Apexi Power Intake.

- Intercooler Kit

- Piggyback ECU

- A tune if I can afford it!

I hear loads of people recommend a full service after importing cars too, should I have this done before/after mods?

I am open to experiences and ideas.

You sure should have it serviced before doing any power-ups on it. When you have that done, I'd recommend the following, depending on how far you want to go, what's your ultimate goal and how much money will you have left after servicing:

- FMIC,

- Nistune, this is fully compatible with auto tranny,

- fuel pump,

- zorst,

+tuning for all the above at slightly higher than factory boost.

roughly in that order.

Your next iteration of spendings on the car should involve something like AT shift kit (or upgraded valvebody, whatever it's called these days), tranny fluid cooler, then injectors+afm and a bigger or highflowed turbo, again roughly in that order.

That's what I'd do to an AT 34 GTT as a basic upgrade plan.

i would recommend spending a little extra money on an APEXI AVCR for boost control and a million other features

maybe get second hand or spend around 950 for it

i had mine displaying boost,speed,revs and injector duty all at once

you can set certain boost for certain gears and all sorts of stuff

top gadget to have i reckon!

What about suspension/brakes?

The stuff covered hasn’t really reached 8k!

CES turbo back mild steel exhaust (good flow, good sound - no drone on auto)

Return flow FMIC

Stock air box with highflow dry type panel filter (like Apexi item from eBay or similar)

Splitfire coil packs or similar (it’s inevitable that yours will fail esp with higher boost, unless its already got them good to source when you have the money)

Electronic boost controller, I like the gizzmo's because they're cheap and work well - profec b or AVCR (but check with your tuner first, a lot hate the AVCR's)

Nistune ECU -(can usually get these tuned and fitted for ~ $1000)

Decent brake pads and either new solid or (if heaps of meat) freshly machined rotors.

Aftermarket sway bars

That’s only ~ $5-5.5k

On top of that, I would get it fully serviced - quality synthetic oil, new spark plugs with the coilpacks, check that it's had the 100thou service if not - do that + service tranny, change fluids in diff. Check all the bushes and replaces as necessary, everything properly aligned, replace shocks with genuine factory items (eBay UK) if required etc.

That should allow for the extra bits/labour, and you'll have a factory tight car with up around 200kW at the wheels of reliable power, you'll be able to turn and stop but retain streetable comforts (which I assumed you’d want since its an automatic 4 door).

Sell auto and buy a manual, use the other money on top to buy a car with mods done, you will save thousands.

Why did you buy a auto in the first place, you will waste a huge amount of money on a conversion.

Or just keep it auto.

I'd get a very comprehensive service done on it and have it gone over with a fine tooth comb.

Then I'd just drive it for a few months and ponder on what I do and don't like about the car and go from there.

Straight up I'd get new suspension bushes and bolts. New tyres too depending on their integrity.

Then I'd do everything Skit_31 said. Should make a nice tidy 200kw daily.

Look on carsales for a skyline with mods at ~8K price higher than what you got your current car for.

Add up the costs of getting all of those mods onto your new car from scratch.

If you are going to upgrade it at all, this is honestly the best decision to make

Definitely look at just buying one already modified or maybe a 32gtr ..

but otherwise id go straight to the most important part, the turbo , get a gt30 and some support mods to make it put out . assuming all the servicing and belts etc are all good.

or sell it and buy something that has a few mods already done and is a manual and save heaps....

This again. I bought my manual 1995 r33gtst for $6500 (guy was desperate). Had the timing belt replaced only 20k previous and a hd clutch in it. Even now after front mount, exhaust, turbo setup, full fluid change, new brake stuff, gauges, fuel pump, z32 afm, computer, tune, injectors and whatever else I forgot, it owes me almost 14k. And I did ALL the work on it. Labour for all this would be ridiculous. Had I spent that in the first place, and I could have, I would have had a heaps better car. I saw some wicked gtst beasts around the 14 k mark. Drive it for a while if you want but really you should advertise it now and start looking for something else.

I agree with most people here. Don't spend any money on an auto. But if you do feel the need to keep it..

Why buy a new car and then spend heaps of money on it (full service not included) straight up. Drive it for a while and find things that you do and dont like and then mod them. Seems silly to me to buy a car and spend 8k on it straight away. Just take it slow and i'm sure you will have a car you enjoy a lot more rather than spending 8 grand on it because thats what people on the internet said.

When I purchased it, I was aware I would probably sell it almost straight away. The Auto was a bargain and immaculate condition. I think I will drive it for a little while and sell it and go for the manual coupé GT-T. The reason I imported it is because I don't want to buy the common thrashed shitty skylines you see in Australia. Such a sad sight. :(. Mind you that is mostly the P-Platers. I do see a good amount of immaculate skylines... Such as the R34 GTR I saw driving down Marmion st last night.

Secondly, it will be a daily driver and I work in Fremantle. Manual is okay, just a little more annoying when using it for work.

If you are going to sell it then the only mod you should do is get a bleed valve and turn the boost up a little. Don't spend a cent more.

i bought my stock gtt 4 early may, got the 100k and 10k service done, brake pads gearbox fluid etc.

has never missed a beat and everyone that sees it complements how clean it is and is shocked that its a 2000 model.

the engine is smooth and there is nothing wrong with it.

not all are thrashed in aus, be patient and look around, i bought mine off a 30 odd year old lawyer who loved it as much as i do now.

    • The oil pressure sensor for logging, does it happen to be the one that was slowly breaking out of the oil block? If it is,I would be ignoring your logs. You had a leak at the sensor which would mean it can't read accurately. It's a small hole at the sensor, and you had a small hole just before it, meaning you could have lost significant pressure reading.   As for brakes, if it's just fluid getting old, you won't necessarily end up with air sitting in the line. Bleed a shit tonne of fluid through so you effectively replace it and go again. Oh and, pay close attention to the pressure gauge while on track!
    • I don't know it is due to that. It could just be due to load on track being more than a dyno. But it would be nice to rule it out. We're talking a fraction of a second of pulling ~1 degree of timing. So it's not a lot, but I'd rather it be 0... Thicker oil isn't really a "bandaid" if it's oil that is going to run at 125C, is it? It will be thicker at 100 and thus at 125, where the 40 weight may not be as thick as one may like for that use. I already have a big pump that has been ported. They (They in this instance being the guy that built my heads) port them so they flow more at lower RPM but have a bypass spring that I believe is ~70psi. I have seen 70psi of oil pressure up top in the past, before I knew I had this leak. I have a 25 row oil cooler that takes up all the space in the driver side guard. It is interesting that GM themselves recommend 0-30 oil for their Vette applications. Unless you take it to the track where the official word is to put 20-50w oil in there, then take that back out after your track day is done and return to 0-30.

    • I take it that the knock retard is from bearings tapping a little tune? Thicker oil is a fragile bandaid. You need a much bigger oil cooler and probably the bigger pump being discussed.
