did you get your engineering done through Unigroup Mark?

how did u go getting the highmount turbo engineered?

Yes mate, for the highmount it was as long as any wiring or pipework was protected.

It goes along the same lines as a kit car really, safety and being soundly engineered with the correct materials and fasteners is the main issue.

What does it take to get an Engineering certificate? My car as it stands has really only bolt on mods. Ride height is standard. I got 17" black wheels. No body kit. The usual mods, fmic, injectors, turbo, exhaust, ecu, plumbed back bov with a high flow cat.

Is the engineer cert to test if your mods are compliant with aus standards or just to make sure its safe to an extent? Do they check for polution and base the certificate on that?

This is an absolute joke. They now label EVERYONE with an exhaust a hoon.

If you do get an engineer certificate, give respect to the cop and only speak and answer when necessary, are you 100% safe? I was told my HWP that even if you drove a Yaris they could defect you and that a "engineer certificate is not worth the paper its written on" and Ive read a few forums about people still getting a defect with the cert.

I am gunna engineer my car soon just gotta make a pod enclosure my turbo is low mounted i have a full 3" kakimoto system with a venom cat which isnt that loud (to me anyways lol) i have R34 GTR seats front and rear my blow off valve is plumbed back no catch can or turbo timer my car isnt that low has 18" rims and the rubber doesnt hang out of the guards and im running on E85 so i am actually keen on maybe doing an emissions test for more bits of paper to help my cars causes....

Can anybody tell me whats involved passing an emissions test?:whistling:

The thing I can't understand is how cars with loud exhaust get their exhaust engineered. My old car apparently was engineered and had a thing attached to the door which covered all the mods. I am using the same exhaust on my current car(HKS Hipower Silent). It is definitely not loud but I really doubt it complies.

Is it actually possible to have a compliant exhaust which won't restrict the turbo and make everything glow a vibrant red and detonate? Or is there some other way to get it done? Ive got a Nismo exhaust, same size as my HKS in diameter but it has two mufflers, you could hear everything over that exhaust.

Wow there's some dumb comments in this thread now.

To all you lot asking about how to get engineered, go to a shop that does it and ask them as every car is different.

As for loud exhausts, to flow huge power and be quiet it's going to need to be a custom job. Custom = expensive, which is why hardly anyone goes down that path.

this is what i want, and im saving as we type....

I'm trying to understand how its done. I really, REALLY doubt you can get an exhaust which is under 90db and does not pose a restriction. As fatz said, the stock exhaust(even on the R33 GTST) is over by a couple db. Did anyone notice that video though, the guy said it has to be 96db... Whats the go with that? Was he wrong?(sounded like someone backed up his statement in the background), or does that comply with that type of car?

I fail to see how you can stuff shit inside an exhaust to shut it up then have it free flowing. The exact moment you fit ANYTHING between the turbo and the exhaust tip, it acts as a restriction. I was looking at those vortex/tornado hot dogs/resonators/muffler things. Its basically a tube length with a spiral in it. Sure it will muffle the sound by bouncing it around but it seems much more free flowing that the standard type mufflers, but not enough to be free flowing...

Ive seen engineered cars with exhausts loud as f**k. That is what I do not understand.

so a custom exhaust = unrestrictive but quiet ? how much are we looking at roughly im down !

I got my catback custom made, it's full 3 inch 316 grade stainless twin shotgun and used x-force 3 inch dump/front and cat. catback including muffler was $1300 and the fitment is out of this world, it clears everything, better than any straight fit exhaust on the market. so if you take that and add say a justjap dump/front and cat in your looking at around $1600-1700 total drive away price (including modding dump/front for flow/fitment if necessary). Another bonus is that it sounds amazing, without being too loud at idle (it's legal by about 3db lol!) but when you floor it, it hits this point and just explodes, setting off house alarms haha. So I pretty much have the best of both worlds. I have been through RBTs and never even got any comments or second looks from the cops. So basically what I'm trying to say is go custom, you will not regret it. Best money I spent on my car without a doubt.

Another theory I have is that cops hate cannon mufflers so go with something else. Shotguns, straight pipes, normal mufflers whatever floats your boat as long as it's not a cannon.

The main reason the price is so large is due to the time it takes to measure, cut and weld things together. What if you've already got an exhaust and want to get it modified to shut it up but maintain its flowing capabilities. Do you run in line mufflers and hot dogs/resonators or just a muffler at the end? Any photos of the exhaust or brand names of the mufflers used?

Don't need to stuff anything in it. When I bought my car it had an aftermarket jap exhaust. The exhaust was 3 inch cat back with a mid muffler and an end muffler, and the thing was so quiet that unless it was dead silent around you couldn't even tell if the car was on. Was no louder than my dad's Hyundai when it was being floored either. So it can be done, just need to choose the right mufflers.

Just make sure your mods are clean and legal. I.e. NO CABLE TIES, 3 points of mounting for pod filters (they dont need to be covered in WA), make sure the tread is under the car (again in WA poke is allowed as long as the tread is under the car not laterally outside the guards), have your mud guards on, use a dual port bov. This way, even if you do get a yellow, as I did in my old silvia, it's a matter of 15 min of work on the car to make it pass pits first time.

I've been pulled over twice since I've had the car engineered, the first time the police asked me to pop the bonnet and I said "no problems sir, I'll just get my engineering certificate out the glove box for you" he had a look and said no problems, the second time they sent me around the corner to the mobile inspection station where the RTA guys were, they checked my cert, measured my ride height, tyres, lights and said no problems.

My car looks fairly stock from the outside but with aftermarket everything under the bonnet and under the car, inside the car is a half cage, harnesses, R34 GTR seats, fire extinguisher, first aid kit.

The rims were R34 GTT rims (now with 33 GTR rims) with the Nissan logo which makes the look standard, but it all covered in the cert.

I keep my cert with my CAMS licence, rego paper and insurance paperwork, which helps explain some of the mods.

Though I'm also 46 yrs old which keeps me out of the "stupid kid" demographics, and I am also always polite and answer all questions or requests with a smile, initially when pulled over I always say Gday and ask them how their day is.

I can understand why these inspections are needed to remove unsafe cars from the road, and I agree that imports are picked on, why, they are easy targets, but let's be honest, you can have your car legal and still have fun, albeit with some undue attention, do it right and the hassles are greatly reduced, do it wrong and pay for your mistakes.

Old man tip

No 1: don't have your car low with big rims, loud, or outlandish body kits.

No 2: get your mods engineered.

No 3: be polite always, the police are just doing a job they have been told to do.

No 4: don't give them reasons to pull you over, ensure all your lights work, and don't break the road laws.

That's all well and good but when you've gone for a relaxing drive on a Monday night to meet a friend and on your way home you get RBTd and you say as always G'day, how are you tonight? And get ignored as usual, then they start acussing you of been seen speeding in a suburb you weren't in that day, and the fact that he even specified a steet and stated he saw my rego and ended the conversation with, your not in trouble or anything or you would have a ticket already. You sorta get pissed off. My mates are all hoons with no respect, I'm a year younger then them (20) and I am imediatly put in the category of stupid kid. One reason why I'm selling my car after wake field to buy something when I'm older. Not all cops are ass holes but I have never met someone to give me a response of how is your day. They put on some marcho act to intimidate me because I'm young and 70 odd kilos.

Also, I'm driving my car from shellharbour to Newcastle to get it To my new home on Friday, I'm doomed... :(

my exhaust isn't restrictive and is ~88db. Ask anyone who's seen it, she's a quiet one :D

    • You just need to remove the compressor housing, not the entire turbo. I would not be drilling and tapping anything with the housing still on anyways.
    • So, I put my boat on a boat. First of all, I'm going to come out and say it. Why is Tasmania not considered a holy goal, an apex that all road-legal modified cars go to, to experience? This place is an absolute wonderland of titanic proportions. If people are already getting club runs for once in a lifetime 30 person cruises to Tassy then I've never seemed to see it. It is like someone replaced the entire place with an idyllic wonderland for cars, and all of the people living there with paid actors who are kind, humble, and friendly. Dear god. After doing a lap of almost all of the place I've found that it's a great way to find out all of the little things that the car isn't doing quite right and a great way to figure it all out. All in all, I drove for 4 hours a day for a week and nothing broke. I didn't even need to open the engine bay. This is by all means a great success, but it has left me with a list of things to potentially address. I also now have a 3D printed wheel fitment tool which annoyingly hasn't got any threads in it to actually assemble it. I might be able to tape it together to check the sizing I actually want to use, but it'll likely involving pulling the shocks out to properly measure travel at least at the front, and probably raise the car while I'm at it, at least in the rear. I scraped on quite a few things and I'm not sure how else to go about it. I was taking anything with a bump at what felt like 89 degree angles. And address those 10 other tasks. And wash the car. God damn it is dirty. And somehow, the weather was perfect the entire time - And because I was on the top of Mt Wellington it turns out it was very much about to freeze up there. I did something I typically never do and took some photos up there in what must have been -10 and the foggy felt like suspended ice, rather than mere fog. If you own a car in Australia, you owe it to yourself to do it.
    • Damn that was hilarious, and a bit embarrassing for skylines in general 😂 vintage car life ey. That R33 really stomped. Pretty entertaining stuff
    • Hi, I have a r32 gtr transmission. Does any of you guys have an idea how much power it will hold with the billet center plate and stock gearset? At what power level and use did yours brake with or without billet plate? Thanks, Oystein Lovik
    • Saw this replica police car based on a Mitsubishi Starion XX parked next to a 'police box' (it's literally a box) in Hirohata, Himeji City in Hyogo prefecture the other day. It's owned by Morii-san who is a local Mitsubishi Starion enthusiast. According to a local radio station blog post, he always wanted to make a police car himself based on ones he saw in his favourite Manga comics.  As it's illegal to modify a car to look like a police car and drive on the road, Morii-san tried many times to get permission from Aboshi police station headquarters nearby. They refused initially by after they got tired of that they granted him permission. However, the car can only be displayed on private property and obviously can't be registered as long as the police livery is present. The car was completed at a cost of 1.5 million yen (US$ 10,000) in addition to the car cost. A location was chosen outside Hirohata Police box where the car can easily been seen from the street. Morii-san has two other Starion road cars, both widebody GSR-VRs.
