Hi guys,

I wondered if anybody had an opinion on the best ignition setup for an RB25DET neo currently running circa 500hp but I'm about to start pushing for 650 at the wheels. At the moment I'm running standard coil packs, 8 grade plugs. It seems to be blowing out the spark in 5th gear at full boost (1.4 bar on a GT3076r)

Splitfires are an obvious choice, but what is everybody else running?

Cheers

Chris

grab a set of falcon coils in wasted spark

Is there any advantage in wasted spark ion an RB? I know some engines like it more than others.

Have a search on ebay.au - there were some brand new OEM nissan coils going for the same price or less than Splitfires.

I wouldnt use these ebay nissan coils. Had a customer use

Some. Was going good till we got to 18psi and one of the coils split in half.

They had nissan logo's and looked genuine but didnt last a dyno session

grab a set of falcon coils in wasted spark

these are cheap and better then AU packs. need 3 of them

http://www.msdignition.com/Products/Coils/Stock_Replacement/8224_-_GM_Coil_Pack,_2_Tower_Style.aspx

search the part number on ebay

Both these need ignitors

best off with LS1 coils if you dont want to use splitfires etc

Are you sure that turbo is capable of pushing that much HP at the wheels?

It's only meant to be able to push 550hp at the flywheel on paper.

This is what I'm wondering.

If he is not upgrading turbo, then Splitfires will more than handle the task for a GT3076 as they are only ever going to push 300rwkw (400rwhp) on PUMP.

Hell Splitfires will do 400rwkw (545rwhp) as many have before. Well beyond what a GT3076 will ever make.

But... To go to 485rwkw (650rwhp), you'd be putting a very sizeable turbo on there, so big you would not be even mentioning anything based on stock ignition at that level.

The turbo is currently running 500hp at 1.4 bar. I'll wind this up as far as we can go then swap it out for a new GTX series Garrett or BW equivalent.

Say I was shooting for 600 rwhp, what do you recommend in terms of:

-plugs

-coil packs

-leads?

Thanks

Chris

500hp or 500rwhp?

There is no way a GT3076 will make 500rwhp (in Aus terms). So 600rwhp is most certainly out of the question.

600rwhp is not outside the Splitfire possibilities, the upper end of it though realistically.

Given you'll need at least a GTX35, and easily 25psi+ to get there and given that you'll need good spark.

What ECU are you using?

As far as an inductive ignition system goes the ls2 coils are very good and cheap too - they are not obviously not coil on plug though. The other option is the ford xr6t coils which are also very good and cheap. I've run 1mm plug gap with a 2jz and 2.3bar boost with the xr6t coils.

The engine is (was, as it's currently on it's way out of the car) running 498.9 fwhp, mapped on a Link G4 plug and play with a 5 bar map sensor - tested on a Dyno Dynamics rig. I set the atmospherics myself and placed the IAT sensor, so i know it's right. The GT3076R won't push 500rwhp, you're right. But as i said in my previous post, i'm currently on the journey for 600rwhp and need to upgrade the ignition system anyway - so want something that's fit for purpose.

Hi Chris,

Can you please confirm what your definition of "fwhp". I assume you mean flywheel horsepower (bhp) and not front wheel horsepower? :D I prefer to use wheel horsepower (whp) or brake horsepower (bhp). Also you say it was measured on a Dyno Dynamics (wheel) dyno. How does the dyno calculate "fwhp" when it measures tractive effort, wheel speed and weather conditions only? Is the engine speed also measured by the dyno? Could you upload an image of your dyno printout? Pictures speak 1000 words.

Sincerely David.

In the UK they mostly state power at the flywheel and in HP.

This looks much bigger than RKW,

So 498.9FWHP (GOSH) might translate into a more reasonable 300 RKW (rough guestimate)

Also what do you guys mean by introducing wasted spark?

Why would using other coils change anything to the ignition pattern?

Clearly the ignition pulse for the coils remains the same ...

(just wondering)

    • Thanks guys,  Yeah I should at least have them dynoed, at least then I know what I've got as a starting point.  The springs on these are hard as rocks. I vaguely remember Russman saying he was going to sell the shocks to me with the rocks fitted, as he was keeping the softer springs for his new setup.  I didn't click at the time but of course that was to let me know the shock/spring wouldn't be matched.  I also remember pricing up new springs around 2014-15, but, house, money etc. it never happened. So that was another reason to have them rebuilt. I have rebuilt the forks on many motorcycles so I think I could handle the seals on these easily enough, but getting the valving right would be a rabbit hole I cbf exploring.  Duncan, interesting to hear RP was tuning these back then. I might give them a call.  In the mean time I have been busy fitting sway bars. The Whiteline rear sway bar I purchased 15 years ago finally got fitted, along with the Whiteline front bar that showed up last week. Just waiting on new links for the front sway bar to finish that off.  And my spare set of advan AVS VS5's should be back from the powder coaters in a Pearl White finish sometime this week, with a set of Hankook RS4's lined up for fitting.  And then I just have all the suspension bushes to do. A comprehensive kit is on the way... Lots to do before the Ararat hill climb. Cheers guys 🍻
    • Nice car! I’m glad folks in the US have gotten past the FnF and are buying real cool cars like the 260RS I was with a bunch of mates in Portland about a year ago and spotted a green Stagea (just a regular 2.5T AWD) parked about 2 blocks away and they were like “a what?” So I made a bet with them for a round of beers and said “ok one of you run down there and tell me if the steering wheel is on the correct side” 5 mins later the American comes trudging back up the hill and goes “he’s right guys. Ok what beer do you want?”
    • Should replace OR drop the tank, give it's good clean. Might be worth replacing that entire fuel level/pump/cradle thing with this: https://frenchysperformancegarage.com/products/fpg-s13-180sx-r32gtst-single-pump-hanger-kit-billet-hat-6-v3-fpg-089?gQT=2
