Gt2871R Advice!

Recommended Posts

I am currently tossing up between 2 versions of the GT2871r for an rb25.

I'm looking for a responsive 250-270kw with decent top end.

The first is the GT2871r 0.64 52 trim (AKA GT-RS).

The second is the GT2871r 0.86 56 trim.

I will be replacing the rear housing with either an OP6 or standard r33 rear housing so it bolts into the stock location.

Intake piping will be modified to suit.

My question is this, which version of the 2871r would be more appropriate and is the OP6 housing worth it?

Quick answer is no

I may be wrong but a 2871 is going to only just squeeze out 250rwkw, then you're going to choke it with an OP6 housing?

Why not just get a GT3071R with the Sonic housing - Happy days

Responsive 250-270rwkw AND a decent top end? Haven't you just named your top end in the former? Get a high flow OP6 or fit a standard 3071.

Daniel, are you able to pass me a link to the 3071r with sonic housing as I cant find it? (Also, how big is this housing)

The GT3071r internally gated was my other option and it seems as this will be the way to go.

Originally i was after the 0.64 rear housing but I have heard this smaller housing has trouble with boost control.

Because of this, I'll be looking into the standard 0.86 rear housing.

With regards to fitment, I am unsure about a few things regarding the 3071 and I cant find a clear answer.

All I need is for it to bolt onto the stock manifold and dump (oil/water lines will be sorted and custom intake piping will be made).

What is needed to make this possible (i.e. from manifold to turbo & from turbo to dump)

Thanks for the replies guys, I appreciate the help.

http://www.sonicperformance.com.au/739548_dash_RB20_dash_25/Nissan-RB20_or_25-Ball-Bearing-Upgrade/pd.php

That's about all I can find on the Sonic website as far as what's got a housing but we have done quite a few upgrades now with really good results. Genuine Garrett turbo and the housing fitted is a 0.75 A/R. It can be fitted to anything from a T28 up to a GT3076R.

Then you can have the standard RB25 comp cover machined to suit the front so it's a direct bolt on arrangement but we always pick a size larger when we do this because the smaller comp cover does effect airflow a little bit.

All the standard piping, dump and manifold all fits back up to the original place.

One of those would get you 260rwkw and is complete bolt on except for the water line around the back of the head needs to be cut to suit the line kit you get

Then there is option B which is to leave the 3071 comp cover on it and do your pipework as planned. I think the last one we did was 275rwkw at 18psi but may have been 16psi I cannot remember right now

Sonic housing? R U serious?

I can recall quite a few threads where we have specifically weened people off the sonic housings, and even made them return it in place of a genuine Garrett at a massive cost.

Why is it you are recommending that product all of a sudden?

Not sure why you would be weening people off them. They have a purpose and that's to make a Garrett turbo a direct bolt on. They will not flow as much as the housing that comes with the turbo unless its the 28 series. That's why a 3071 is suggested. It will provide very similar, if not the same, response and make the power he wants.

The only turbo that under-performed on a sonic housing for us was the large GT3076R. It only did 275rwkw at 16psi and more boost just made it ping.

We did a GT2860RS on an RB20 and it had identical response to the factory turbo and at 200rwkw on moderate boost, it also was a good performer.

I have fitted dozens without a single issue but anyone trying to get good power (280rwkw +) should be considering other options anyway. Too many people want to eat cake these days

Fair enough. Its good that you put it out there re what they are good for.

Thanks,

    • Yeah not sure. I sourced another relay no problem, its definitely a relay according to Nissan parts, they used those specific relays on a bunch if cars around that time, but my two options are, find a behind dash wiring loom which is proving difficult, or get the current loom fixed up by the shop when they put my rebuilt engine back in, they are confident in their auto electrical abilities. Thing is my current loom has anti-theft stuff and GPS immobilisers wired into it so easiest option may be to just fix the current one to save ripping apart the immobiliser.
    • Took it apart to get to the bearing found out i was wrong the bearing was pressed on to the diff side and the part i removed only had the bearing side, checked the bearing all looked fine took the shaft end to a shop and they recon it was movement from back and forth that made the marks and not rumbling about, so i just changed the seal and put it all back again.
    • Oh dear. That's um. There's like. Um. a lot of bare wires there. Take the whole thing out. Something is very very shorted somewhere. IT IS NOT CAUSED BY THAT "RELAY" (assuming it is a relay).
    • Hey all. Had a bit of a scare today with my R34 GTT when i flicked on the tail/parker lights, and  some wiring started going up in smoke under the dash. The fuse didnt blow, it just melted the casing of the fuse so must have been a crap fuse? Previous owner did alot of wiring, some of which is quite sub par and the fuse that melted was definitely newer than the other ones that were in the fuse box, but didnt seem that he touched the wires that mainly got melted. Anyway may need a small section of a new loom, is there lots of similarities between the turbo and non turbo looms especially for under the dash stuff? The wired that got friend go into a 6 pin relay under the dash. The non turbo ones are less than half the price here from a wrecker and all i would need it the section that got fried and any other wires that are affected.  Thanks in advance
