Hey all, I am in the process of putting an RB25DET Neo into my R32 gts-t and i just have a few questions about which parts i should be using.

First off this will be my daily (but i will only be driving it 2-3 times a week), but i will be taking it to as many track/drift days as i can, at which i will most probably drive it very hard haha. I am looking for reliability more than a maximum power figure at the moment, but anywhere between 240-270kw i will be happy with as long as it is a very safe tune. In saying that i would like to purchase parts that give me the ability to push 300-330+kw if i change the turbo/manifold set up later on.

I have broswed the forums for ages and have put together a list of what i think should keep me happy, but i would love some feedback/second opinions.

RB25DET NEO

Hypergear Hi-Flow (probably looking at the SS2PU or ATR43G2.5 or G3)

JJR Bellmouth 3" Dump pipe

Full 3" exhaust

Z32 AFM

Splitfire coilpacks

Pod filter

R32 GTR FMIC

Supporting Mods:

NEO NIStune ECU

Greddy Profec B spec 2 EBC

New Nissan thermostat

Full gasket kit (minus headgasket)

Replace under plenum water hoses

My questions are about Injectors and fuel pump.

I am tossing up between Siemens DEKA 630cc, or DeatschWerks 850cc. A few people on the forums use the Siemens, but i was wondering if they would give me enough head room to push 330kw+

Both are direct fit, just after people opinions/reasons why i should choose one over the other. Also would the DeatschWerks be large enough to support E85 if i eventually wet down that path?

Also which fuel pump should i fit. The two that i have chosen are the Walbro GSS-341 (255l/ph) or the newer Walbro 400l/ph E85 compatible pump. After a lot of reading most people seem to agree that neither of these pumps have fuel pickup issues in an R32 gts-t fuel tank.

Also one other question, what engine mounts should i use when putting the NEO in the 32? The normal RB20DET ones or do i use NEO ones?

Thanks!

Yup, return flow kit from JJR will do the job. I second the call for Bosch 1000cc injectors (which you can buy in various ways, but the most popular appears to be injectordynamics).

Do not waste your time with a pod filter. Just make sure you have a good cold air feed to the R32 airbox.

Engine mounts......do you mean the steel or the rubber? Rubber, buy standard VL Commodore/R31 from generic parts or the stiffer Nismo ones. The steel bits are best done with the R32 units.

Take the opportunity to pull all the plumbing and other crap from the HICAS system out of the engine bay and from the rear of the car. The Neo PS pump won't run the HICAS system anyway, and you wouldn't want to be retro fitting old crap like the R32 pump onto the Neo.

You will also need to do some adaptation between the R32 and Neo heater hoses. They are different sizes.

Add a timing belt to your list.

cheers

Are these the ones that you mean? They seem to be the full length ones, I thought NEO's use the 3/4 length injectors?

I was already running an R32 GTR cooler and pod filter so that's sorted. Yeah I'm planning on ripping as much of the Hicas out this weekend as possible, just going to follow one of the tutorials on here.

With the engine mounts I didn't realise they were 2 seperate pieces. So I will buy new VL rubber mounts, and use the 32 steel outer part.

And I'm looking to keep everything as standard as possible, so no external gate haha

If you're planning on going much over 250kw I'd steer clear of the JJR turnflow, particularly if you're doing SS2 or G3. I have one fitted now and it's a limitation in reaching 300kw, so I'm putting on a non-turnflow Greddy kit now.

Get a larger (min 76mm thick) core and make sure the fron bar air dam is giving most of the core plenty of fresh air (not obscured by most of the stock front bar or number plate).

I have 256@wheels with very little done. Head ported stage 1 pomi tom cams 550cc injectors std manifolds neo op6 turbo with hypergear hiflow .63 rear now 3" turbo back 100 cel cat straight through muf and a 600 x 300 x 76 front mount. had chip fitted by EFI at Yatla on Brisbane south side running 12 psi boost and will be going back to get it reset for 16-18psi and hopeing to push up to 280-290kw@ wheels.

Looks like my parts should get me in the ballpark of 260kw then.

Having a read on the forums everyone seems to love the ID1000's, but with the link i posted they don't have the 3/4 length (48mm) option listed? Is there a direct fit ID1000 available for the NEO engine or will i have to use the 60mm ones and modify something else on the fuel rail or connectors? (Sorry, i have never playued around with injecotrs before and there seems to be limited direct fit NEO options)

Thinking a bit more about the build and was just wondering how beneficial cam gears are on the NEO. I know that RB25's have variable cam timing on the inlet cam so would i leave the stock cam gear and just use a variable gear on the exhaust cam?

Thanks.

You want the 1000.48.14 model ID1000's for the Neo. They drop straight in, 48mm long and 14mm on both ends.

Thanks mate they were on the main page, not in the Nissan section. I want the plugs and clips option yeah?

About the cam gear, if I can pick up an exhaust cam gear for cheap still not worth it? I'd like to have response as close to stock as possible and thought a cam gear may aid this.

See, "don't bother with cam gears"

There are no results on SAU that I am aware of where cam gears did anything positive on a neo RB25. By the time you install your "cheap" cam gear, try to dial it in on the dyno and end up back at zero you will be wishing you saved your money on the "cheap" cam gear.

  • 2 weeks later...

Talking to Matt @ NIStune about my ECU and injectors. He was saying that 1000cc injectors would be overkill and that the engine wouldn't idle and would be very hard to tune. I said that I was planning on using Injector Dynamics 1000's and that lots of people had reported no idle problems with them, and some people (Piggaz etc) said even the 2000's are fine at idle.

Just wanting to see if anybody is running ID1000's on an RB25 with a NIStune before I change my injector choice.

Thanks all.

He admitted he hadn't worked with any Injector Dynamics injectors before, and he worked with a customers car the other day that was using 1000cc injectors and had massive idle problems.

They will be fine, they have been proven time and time again to idle and tune pretty much better than anything else, smaller injectors included.

To answer your other question further up, yep get the plugs and pins option rather than pigtail connections. That way you can just remove your old plugs and reconnect the USCAR ones to the existing wiring.

Starting to put this thing back together now and i was trying to decide how to best set up the breathers from the cam covers. I have a normal greddy catch can with 2 fittings on it. Is my best bet just going to be to leave the PCV valve in place, and running the exhaust cam cover to one fitting of the catch can, and then the other out of the catch can into the intake before the turbo? Thanks.

    • Well GTSBoy, prepare yourself further. I did a track day with 1/2 a day prep on Friday, inpromptu. The good news is that I got home, and didn't drive the car into a wall. Everything seemed mostly okay. The car was even a little faster than it was last time. I also got to get some good datalog data too. I also noticed a tiny bit of knock which was (luckily?) recorded. All I know is the knock sensors got recalibrated.... and are notorious for false knock. So I don't know if they are too sensitive, not sensitive enough... or some other third option. But I reduced timing anyway. It wasn't every pull through the session either. Think along the lines of -1 degree of timing for say, three instances while at the top of 4th in a 20 minute all-hot-lap session. Unfortunately at the end of session 2... I noticed a little oil. I borrowed some jack stands and a jack and took a look under there, but as is often the case, messing around with it kinda half cleaned it up, it was not conclusive where it was coming from. I decided to give it another go and see how it was. The amount of oil was maybe one/two small drops. I did another 20 minute session and car went well, and I was just starting to get into it and not be terrified of driving on track. I pulled over and checked in the pits and saw this: This is where I called it, packed up and went home as I live ~20 min from the track with a VERY VERY CLOSE EYE on Oil Pressure on the way home. The volume wasn't much but you never know. I checked it today when I had my own space/tools/time to find out what was going on, wanted to clean it up, run the car and see if any of the fittings from around the oil filter were causing it. I have like.. 5 fittings there, so I suspected one was (hopefully?) the culprit. It became immediately apparent as soon as I looked around more closely. 795d266d-a034-4b8c-89c9-d83860f5d00a.mp4       This is the R34 GTT oil sender connected via an adapter to an oil cooler block I have installed which runs AN lines to my cooler (and back). There's also an oil temp sensor on top.  Just after that video, I attempted to unthread the sensor to see if it's loose/worn and it disintegrated in my hand. So yes. I am glad I noticed that oil because it would appear that complete and utter catastrophic engine failure was about 1 second of engine runtime away. I did try to drill the fitting out, and only succeeded in drilling the middle hole much larger and now there's a... smooth hole in there with what looks like a damn sleeve still incredibly tight in there. Not really sure how to proceed from here. My options: 1) Find someone who can remove the stuck fitting, and use a steel adapter so it won't fatigue? (Female BSPT for the R34 sender to 1/8NPT male - HARD to find). IF it isn't possible to remove - Buy a new block ($320) and have someone tap a new 1/8NPT in the top of it ($????) and hope the steel adapter works better. 2) Buy a new block and give up on the OEM pressure sender for the dash entirely, and use the supplied 1/8 NPT for the oil temp sender. Having the oil pressure read 0 in the dash with the warning lamp will give me a lot of anxiety driving around. I do have the actual GM sensor/sender working, but it needs OBD2 as a gauge. If I'm datalogging I don't actually have a readout of what the gauge is currently displaying. 3) Other? Find a new location for the OEM sender? Though I don't know of anywhere that will work. I also don't know if a steel adapter is actually functionally smart here. It's clearly leveraged itself through vibration of the motor and snapped in half. This doesn't seem like a setup a smart person would replicate given the weight of the OEM sender. Still pretty happy being lucky for once and seeing this at the absolute last moment before bye bye motor in a big way, even if an adapter is apparently 6 weeks+ delivery and I have no way to free the current stuck/potentially destroyed threads in the current oil block.
    • Literally looks like direct port nitrous haha
    • They are in fact just nozzles. They are there only to produce a spray pattern and limit flow. The injector itself is what I use to control flow to the 7x nozzles. My old system had no injector and only PWM the pump. This lead to a lot of inconsistencies, and poor atomization at low pressure when the pump was ramping up.
