I have heard about Yaris coils, Scott @ Insight actually mentioned them at the same time as the R8 ones and they are a consideration but I'm leaning towards the R8 coils because NGK do a replacement and they have a shop at Homebush

I see more and more people using R8 Coils in RB26 . But I still have yet to see some test against each other in spark power.

I have seen a vid of a guy that tested the R8 coils and they made 45kv, not sure how that compares but it sounds like alot :)

I have googled heaps and yet to find anyone actually using them on a 26 :/

But then I googled heaps about the LS2 truck coils and didn't find any bad posts till after I lost an engine :(

thats not really saying anything compared to the ls1 coils that had a comprehensive test.

May be it is a Canadian thing quite a few members on http://forums.gtrcanada.com/ uses them, and they purchase their wiring kit from https://www.facebook.com/simonpierre.foucault

The 300ZX guys are using them too http://www.aus300zx.com/forum/showthread.php?t=332677

Heres my LS2 coils sitting in a NEO head. Simple brackets, parts of the webbing across the head had to be drilled down. Doesn't have to look amazing because the cover fit's over the top! :thumbsup:

Wiring Specialties in the USA do a plug in harness for LS2 coils to suit different model skylines for around $150, mad not to use one!

found another variation of the VAG Coils done by Ignition Projects , its basically Porsche Cayenne Turbo coils . Don't know how these Cayenne Turbo Coils vs R8 Coils vs LS2 Coils in firing power. It would be nice if someone can do some extensive testing on these. Seems like the biggest advantage using the LS2 Coils is sits much lower than the VAG Coils.

More info on the Cayenne Turbo Coil over plug setup here, http://www.speedhunters.com/2014/10/a-spark-of-efficiency-project-gtr/

Some Quite Interesting, but unverified, tidbits;

This ebay add says;

Nissan OEM coil : 22 KV
Split fire Coil: 24KV
LS1 Coil : 30Kv
LS2 Coil : 34Kv
LS2 TRUCK (with alloy heat sink): 42kv, twice the firing power, GUARANTEE NO MISS FIRE 32PSI (2.2 BAR) @ 1.1MM GAP

And this post on performanceforums says;

so coil energy at max safe dwell before saturation begins is:
Yaris @ 2ms/6A 78mj
Toyota @ 3ms/6A 117mj
D585 @ 8 amp dwell (UNSAFE) 256mj
D585 @ 6 amp dwell (SAFE-ISH) 144mj

I just got the aem smart coils for my rb. They have been well proven to stupid high power and boost. Nearest thing to cdi ignition without needing a cdi unit. And for around £50 a coil you can't complain :)

So we trialled my LS2 Truck Coils. Setup is stock coil boots and springs onto the end of the LS2 truck coils. Misfired at 17psi with a 1.1mm spark plug gap, put 0.8's in and it fixed it.

Need to spend some time looking into it, maybe needs a direct power feed, maybe needs better boots and MSD coil springs of some sort.

How did you set the dwell? Or did you leave it stock?

FWIW the coil power feed on the RB26 appears to be a dedicated, relay driven circuit. I'm hoping its ok to re-use when i do mine.

Found the equation to change it into crank degrees for the PFC. I changed them all to suit 3.5ms at each RPM interval. Wasn't good enough and even 4ms was still causing a misfire coming onto boost.

Have you got a good earth/ground?

Yep, and check that you have the full ~14.5V (alternator charging) at the coils when you're hitting boost. IIRC another SAU'er had an alternator who's output was trailing off higher in the RPM band, so you'll want to log it, even if only at the ECU (cause logging at the coils probably wont be so easy).

    • It is a kunfine Android screen . Does anyone know the wirering diagram of the fuga ??
    • just an update to this, poor man pays twice  Tried sanding down the pulleys but it didnt do the trick. Chucked another second hand alternator in the na car which I got for free off my mate and its fixed the squelling. Must have been unlucky with the bearings.    As for my turbo car, I managed to pick up a cwc rb alternator conversion bracket + LS alternator for 250 off marketplace, looked to be in really good nick. Installed it , started the car and its not charging the battery.... ( Im not good with auto elec stuff so im not sure if this was all I needed to do but I verified such by using a multimeter on the battery when the engine was running and I was only getting 12.2v )   I had to modify the earth strap for the new LS alternator , factory earth strap was a 10mm bolt which did not fit the bolt on the LS alternator which was double the size so I cut it off , went to repco bought some ring terminals that fit, crimped it onto the old earth strap and bolted it up to the alternator , started the car and same issue. Ran like shit and was reading 12.2 at the battery.  For a "plug and play" advertised kit thats not very plug and play but alas.  My question is , am I missing something ? Ive been reading that some people recommend upgrading the stock 80 amp alternator fuse to a 140 amp but I dont see how that would stop the alternator charging especially at idle not under load.  Regardless ive pulled it out and am going to get it bench tested by an auto elec tomorrow but it would be handy to know if ive missed something silly or have done something wrong.
    • My wild guess is that you have popped off an intake pipe....check all of the hoses between the turbo and the throttle for splits or loose clamps.
    • Awesome, thanks for sharing!
    • To provide more specific help, more information is needed. What Android screen? What is its wiring diagram? Does the car's wiring have power at any required BAT and ACC wires, and is the loom's earth good?
