Hi Guys

Please, no flaming, I'm asking a simple question not opening a debate.

Is anyone using one of the Knock-Off style TiAL External Wastegates (Commonly available from Ebay for around $160 and can shed some light on their quality? Obviously, wont be as good as a genuine TiAL Item, but for a street setup, which doesnt get given hell it's a possibility it could be suitable if they operate properly.

I guess your boost cut adjustability could add a safety for that, most aftermarket ECU's (Maybe Nistune too) have adjustable boost limit?

Thats strange, how did moisture get into it? I would assume the raw materials of even a genuine one would have had a problem in that situation?

My mate's car was an EL Falcon on LPG. The exhaust was always a bit wetter than when it was on petrol. But you know what happens when a car is in the workshop for a while. It gets started, moved 5 metres outside and stopped. Then again, and again and again. Always running cold for a short time. Makes for a very wet exhaust. The rather crappy copy wastegate's materials rusted. Same mechanic had never seen it before on good quality gear. Was always paranoid about it afterwards though.

We all know external gates have superior boost control than that of a internal gates, I have a custom low mount manifold with the outlet on it for a 44mm V-Band external gate which I intend to run plumbed back into the system on my Stagea RB25DET-NEO

Some things are not worth going cheap on. This is one of them.

Hi Ben, I am the fella that came and bought your Stagea Exhaust. I dont see if this functions properly, it should be cancelled out. I mean, everyone sings praise for Kando turbos which are copies of popular items and operate well on their own with a significant reduction in price.

I have personally considered buying a knock off waste gate. And decided against it.

The reality is if it stuffs up as described by GTSBOY, boost is uncontrolled. Also, if the diaphragm breaks boost will be too high.

Relying on engine management to cut power etc is not the best way.

A knockoff turbo if it breaks it won't kill the engine. I would sooner use a knock off turbo than waste gate.

I had a fake one pulled apart the other day (Atleast I think it was fake as I got it cheap, I sold the whole setup on after rebuilding the turbo anyway) and the Diaphragm material was very good quality, similar to the ducting we use in aviation bleed air plumbing (Hi temperature).

I'm more looking if someone is using one and to see their response.

E.G, Rock solid boost control, with consistent control rather than an expected cheap quality of Fluctuating boost, and inconsistent control.

We don't all know that because it isn't true. See for example the Borg Warner range of internal waste gated turbos. If your budget is tight a Hypergear turbo would bolt straight on to your stock exhaust manifold. I got reasonable boost control on my IWG GCG highflowed RB25DET with a Jaycar boost controller!

Having said that for my RB30 I got a Synapse wastegate and using a Link and a Mac valve got pretty much "rock solid" boost

That is a nice boost curve, however I have the external gate outlet, so should utilise the opportunity to run one.

By the sounds, they seem pretty unreliable, seeing as no-one has chimed in with a really good result yet.

Guess I will wait for a second handy to pop up before I get turbo, or just buy new once I have bought a turbo..

I will only sell good Aussie Turbosmart gates these days. I have seen too many issues with other gate brands to recommend them, and you are only talking another $200 or so compared to the cheap knockoffs.

It isn't an item you want to cheap out on, exhaust manifold temps get pretty damn high.

Second hand is useless as you don't get a new flange for both sides.

If you dont want to buy a tial or turbosmart etc. another good option that is cheaper than the others is hypergears 50mm wastegate Ive been running one for 3years and no issues its about the 350 mark I think.

I spoke with Aaron of driftmotion over here. He sells some Supra turbo kits and they use the china gates. He said specifically NOT to use the new ones with V-bands...He said the older Greddy style 50mm and the new flanged 46mm work great. He recommended the 46mm back in the day (when I was thinking about going single on my Supra.

And...Since i plan on road racing my car I honestly would just spend the money on a proven unit with a warranty...but again safeguards like boost cut could help the issue either way if things went south.

    • Maf is a question mark but TPS  I have set at 0.47, the fact that I’m getting proper voltage range out of it with the key on leads me to believe it’s functioning properly. I’m getting proper voltages on basically everything. I still need to look up voltage ranges for z32 maf and test that 
    • Honestly no not at all, but it’s a very basic tune, it’s stock injectors q45 tps and z32 maf. Other than that it’s a completely stock base map. The file is from nistune and from my understanding if it was tune related I would be able to unplug maf and tps and it would still start even if it was a really shitty start. I have tried starting it with coolant temp, maf, and tps unplugged none of those 3 togethor or individually changes anything

    • What does it look like with highway driving? And yes, I had a similar thought as Duncan. It looks quite similar in my Stagea and I have made myself accept it as normal. Might have to look into it some day   Highway gets as low as 10l/100km on my end so I'm not as worried about it being a mechanical issue. More likely just the tune on the haltech.
    • While I was waiting for the new parts to come in for the charge pipe and radiator I decided to do some turbo modification. The drive pressure (exhaust backpressure) was a lot higher that I thought it should be. For 32lbs of boost drive was 55lbs. The turbine housing is a 1.10AR and my turbo builder has suggested to go to a 1.25AR. To test if a larger AR would do anything to reduce drive pressure AND not spend any money I decided to hog out the divider in my current housing. I removed it from the inlet and the whole way through the housing.  After reassembly and testing it doesn't look like this modification did anything for reducing drive pressure or requiring more fuel (making more power). Oh well, it was worth a shot. We'll get some data at the track if it makes it past the 60ft. I also machined a $7 shift knob off Amazon to fit my Stillway shifter since I didn't like the Stillway shift knob. Next on the list was the radiator replacement and fabrication of a new intercooler tube that had no silicon coupler. No pictures of this - I was short on time each night after work to get this done and didn't stop to take pictures.  Next was to get the clutch disks out and replaced. Previously when installing the dogbox I had ordered a set of the same sintered iron disks I had been running because I switched to the 26-spline input shaft. I thought it was odd that they didn't have any markings or brand name on them like all my old disks had but installed them anyway. At the track I could not get the clutch to lock up using my normal strategies. After two track nights I reached out to the clutch manufacturer and ask their thoughts. They said they had to switch the material out because they were having trouble getting the original material and that this new material would not take to being slipped very well.  So out with the first set of 26-spline disks and in with the correct material 26-spline disks. While I had the trans out I added an inspection/service hole. I've wanted one of these for a while. Now I can have a look at things and change the front cover shimming when needed (clutch wear). I hustled and got the clutch change done in a few hours on a Saturday. Hopped in the car and drove home. On the way home I did a 1-3 pull. When shifting from 2nd to 3rd the core plug in the back of the cylinder head popped out and dumped all the coolant. Thankfully I was only 30 seconds from home and coasted it there. Datalog showed nothing unusual and 2.5psi of coolant pressure. That plug has been in there since 1992 but I guess it worked its way out. Pulled the trans AGAIN and replaced the plug, JB welded it in, and made a brace. Also deleted the head drain I had added in during the bearing issue fiasco.  I am currently changing my boost control plumbing to make it cleaner. After that is done I'll make another attempt at getting past the 60.
