While browsing for what Nismo parts were available for my Nismo R32 I found this solid shift unit and so I was wondering what opinions of it were:

I currently have the interior stripped out of my R32 while it gets repainted so after that gets done it would be a good time to pop this thing in if it's worth the buy. I've never owned a car with a short shift kit before despite having numerous stick shift cars previously and the few times I've driven a car with a short shift kit it just seemed to make the shifts feel notchier so I'd like some opinions first before I decide to bother with this piece.

At that price it will be the 10% one - kudos have made a booboo on the description. The 25% one is $605 here;

I have the 10% one and it just feels a little tighter than the stock shifter. I got it mainly because the boot was stuffed on my stock one and I was getting fumes in the cabin. Its fine, the sky wont fall in. but if you want a noticeably shorter shift you'll probably want the 25% one.

Will definitely feel notchier. Nissan boxes are bloody notchy anyway, so adding more is not awesome. The other aspect to consider is that quick shifters do encourage faster synchro wear. It may not be a major consideration, but it is there nonetheless.

Yeah, the R32 box is notchy already so if this just makes it worse I'll probably pass especially since I'm not planning on taking the car to the track except maybe once or twice just to see what it can do. Since they're so rare here in the US I'd rather risk one of my other cars at the track lol.

I wouldn't run one in my car. And i get everything nismo...

Is that because of the synchro wear issue, the feel, or both?

I saw that other listing and wasn't sure what the difference was for the higher price. Thanks for the clarification. I didn't consider that one though since 600 bucks seemed too much for a part that I didn't really need - I just was considering it since my R32 is a Nismo so of course I'm looking at all the Nismo parts available for the R32.

I've driven the 25% one, felt alot better than my stock one, much tighter and precise, made for some very quick gear changes...

Good to know it felt good to you but I don't think I can justify the 600 buck price at the moment for the 25% version.

I've got the nismo 'solid shifter' on my car - the one with only 10%.

It doesn't feel much shorter in shift to me, but it does feel more 'solid' or more precise in the shift - I think this is due to the more solid bushing they use. The downside of this bushing I've found, is that it definitely transmits more gearbox noise into the cabin - something to be aware of.

Overall, I'm not sure I could recommend it - I'm glad I picked mine up as a cheap second-hander.

Noted. Thanks for the info. From what everyone is saying I think it's a pass for me on either one of the Nismo shift kits especially since my car will rarely see the track if ever.

I have the 10% one in my R34. I'm still building the car so I haven't driven it yet, however its installed and I would say it makes a huge difference. It really is almost solid, where as the rubber inside the shaft on the old one was so soft there was a huge amount of flex in it. Obviously this will come at the expense of NVH but I think it will be well worth it as the standard skyline boxes are not the most precise units.

I have an Attain solid shifter... MUCH better than the Nismo one IMO, better quality too.

I Had the Nismo one previously, and A/B ing them the Attain was much nicer to use.

And comes with a solid shift knob, and it's cheaper than the Nismo. With the spare change I changed the plastic bush for a GKTech brass one. I also have the upgraded spring kit int he box, and it feels pretty damn awesome. I also have a urethane gearbox mount.

Did you notice much noise once you put the GKTech brass bush in? I have one sitting at home but dont know if i want to use it have the uprated springs and it makes the box feel a bit nicer

Yours may be a track car so the noise might not be an issue lol

it is a track car now, but it wasn't when I did it.

Didn't really notice any noise from the bush, but I had solid mounted cradle/solid diff bushes, urethane gearbox mount and Nismo engine mounts, so there was plenty of NVH coming from other areas.

I also don't really mind a little NVH though, so didnt bother me either way. Depends if the inside of your car is like a library or not. ;)

Thanks for the added input guys but unfortunately my car has decided to develop a case of "The Brokens" so the shifter issue is on the back burner until the engine gets sorted lol.

That gear knob looks like the one in the car i drove, i assumed it was a nismo short shifter, was zero noises from it and shifts were awesome like you describe , I had to learn how to drive again cause the shifts were so fast that i was out of sync with the accelerator and clutch so crunched it a few times :/

I personally wouldn't run the "solid shifter" as it's basically a stock level cut shorter. the "quick shift" actually is fulcrum change so the shifter is stock height, but shorter throw. I run the quick shift and the quality is outstanding, same as stock, just shorter. The leverage does make it feel a bit more notchy but it's a good and direct feel to the shifts and they are nice and short. My wife loves it. I would certainly not pay 600 for it. find a used one.

    • Even more fun, leave all the ADAS stuff plugged in, but in different locations, hopefully avoid any codes!   And honestly, all these new cars with their weird electronics. Pull all the electronics out Duncan, and just shove an aftermarket ECU and if needed a trans controller in, along with a PDM. Make it run basic but race car styled!
    • To follow up a question from earlier too since I had the front bar off again (fking!) This is what is between the bumper and the drivers side wheel And this is the navigator side, only one thing but its a biggy! So basically....no putting coolers in the wheel arches without a lot of moving other stuff. Assuming I move to properly race prepping this car I'll take that job on and see how the computers respond to removing a whole bunch of ADAS modules
    • So I prepped the car for another track day on Wednesday (will be interesting to see coolant temps post flushing out and the larger reservoir, with a forecast of 3-14 being 20o cooler than last time I took it out). Couple of things to mention; since I am just driving the car and not taking a support vehicle, I took the rear seats out and just loaded the back up Team Trackday style. Look at all that space! To cover off removing the rear seat....it is weird (note the hybrid is probably different because it wouldn't have folding rear seats) Basically, you remove the lower seat base, very similar to a r series but it is a clip that pulls forward to release the base rather than it being bolted down. Easy Then, you need to remove the side section of the rear seat on each side. There is a 14mm head nut at the bottom of the side piece, the it slides upwards off a hook at the top to release; you also need to unhook the seatbelt from the loop at the top. Then the centre piece is weird. You need to release/fold the seats forward with the tab in the boot on each side From there, there are 2,x12mm headed bolts holding the rear of each seat to the folding bracket, under the trim between the rear seat and the boot (4x christmas tree clips there, they suck). The seat is out but you can see where the bolts attach to the bracket
    • As discussed in the previous post, the bushes in the 110 needed replacing. I took this opportunity to replace the castor bushes, the front lower control arm, lower the car and get the alignment dialled in with new tyres. I took it down to Alignment Motorsports on the GC to get this work done and also get more out of the Shockworks as I felt like I wasn't getting the full use out of them.  To cut a very long story short, it ended up being the case the passenger side castor arm wouldn't accept the brand new bush as the sleeve had worn badly enough to the point you could push the new bush in by hand and completely through. Trying a pair of TRD bushes didn't fix the issue either (I had originally gone with Hardrace bushes). We needed to urgently source another castor arm, and thankfully this was sourced and the guys at the shop worked on my car until 7pm on a Saturday to get everything done. The car rides a lot nicer now with the suspension dialled in properly. Lowered the car a little as well to suit the lower profile front tyres, and just bring the car down generally. Eternally thankful for the guys down at the shop to get the car sorted, we both pulled big favours from our contacts to get it done on the Saturday.  Also plugged in the new Stedi foglights into the S15, and even from a quick test in the garage I'm keen to see how they look out on the road. I had some concerns about the length of the LED body and whether it'd fit in the foglight housing but it's fine.  I've got a small window coming up next month where I'll likely get a little paint work done on the 110 to remove the rear wing, add a boot wing and roof wing, get the side skirt fixed up and colour match the little panel on the tail lights so that I can install some badges that I've kept in storage. I'm also tempted to put in a new pair of headlights on the 110.  Until then, here's some more pictures from Easter this year. 
    • I would put a fuel pressure gauge between the filter and the fuel rail, see if it's maintaining good fuel pressure at idle going up to the point when it stalls. Do you see any strange behavior in commanded fuel leading up to the point when it stalls? You might have to start going through the service manual and doing a long list of sensor tests if it's not the fuel system for whatever reason.
