I really think I need to drive an Evo and an Sti back to back. I've driven an Evo 3, 6.5, 8 and X, but never driven a rex.

At the moment, an 05 Sti and a spare engine and gearbox ready to go seems like a good idea.

This is the last one with the 2L right?

yep thats the last of the 2L

If i bothered to read the first post properly.. GG retard.

You can't really have both reliably. Even if you do want to mix them, if you break said car at the track it can put you up shits creek.

Like i said, personally.... I would go an Emo over a WRX any day. Specifically a IX. They are relatively comfortable, the back seats are actually surprisingly comfortable if people need to use them. Good on the road and their reputation speaks for themselves on the track. Just flash the ECU and wind the boost up. Job done. From factory they are a fantastic package.

same wavelength :)

And if bored, run flex fuel say with a Haltech and crank out over 250kW on E85 or just a basic dual map (which is ok too) on stock ECU

personally, if i wanted something I could thrash and not care about, but also plan to keep it reliable (and affordable), i would get an N/A POS and give zero f**ks.

There is a Mazda 121 bubble in Vic that runs semi's and a half cage. The guy who runs it is always the happiest at any track day. May not be the fastest on the straight, but the thing just keeps chugging along and is fun.

Personally, I would do the civic route. light, heaps of aftermarket bits (a lot of them cheap), decent on fuel, tyres dont cost a fortune and neither does general or major servicing. Anyone who has done a major service (diffs+gearbox fluid) on a late Evo usually has a small tear build-up in their eye whenever they have to talk about it.

I reckon Leroy is on the money.

Imagine spinning a new RS into the gravel. Just think of those lovely sounds of stones hitting the underside of your new, shiny, $50k car. Wouldn't that be lovely....

Now put yourself in something that gets you around in relative comfort but is cheap and you don't really give two f**ks about.

RX-8s are cheap as shit and plenty of parts around for them (ignore the rotary haters).

Mini Cooper S are also cheap as and have a huge aftermarket. Would need heavily tinted windows when on the street, but it'd be a weapon on the track.

Low K's Fiesta ST can be had for under $20k. XR-5 Focus can be had for the same, but a few more K's and I imagine repair costs when something breaks would be eye watering.

A Manual FG XR6 (non-T) with under 50,000ks can be had for about $17k. A few grand for some big brakes, track spec wheels and rubber and a couple grand on some coilovers and that would be a weapon for a smidge over $20k.

350Z Tracks can be had for sub 20s with under 100,000ks.

Lots of cool options.

have you driven both for a good length of time? Have you worked on both?

yes.

But, haven't driven wrx on the track.

Loved my emo on the track, multiple days with little trouble.

Also, consider the sti hatch.

Drop down rear seats, and hatch room would make a suitable weekend mover.

Sti also has the brembo calipers, but, no seat heaters or proximity entry and start.

Emo doesn't has drop down rear seats.

I had a brain snap the other day when I realised if I wanted to do a track day at Wakefield (which is most track days) I would probably tow the car there anyway thus negating the value of having a track car with rego.

So... the Skyline stays I guess! Might consider moving into something a bit easier to manage but for now I just want to use it.

Still wanna sell the F6 and maybe get a rex or evo and take it to Marulan and the odd track day when I cbf'd taking the skyline.

Anyway appreciate everyone's advice. Cheers

    • Its a 2002 vr-x four VQ25DET, silver. Coil overs, lowered, polished alloys and sport exhaust. Bit of a project, was sitting in a shed for a while but runs and drives great.
    • I wasn’t able to replicate the sound anymore. It was a one time sound so maybe it was just coincidence but it was like small pebbles being dropped in a coke can.   should I try cleaning the MAF? It could be it’s functioning but dirty? I don’t know.
    • Update 4: Hi all. The car drives again! Haven't driven for long, only to store it in the garage again, but the test drive was successful. The coolant and oil leaks seem to be fixed for now. Temps on the engine were also very good, while moving I never even saw 80C water during the approx. 30 minute drive. Ate up all the coolant in the reservoir though so will have to fill that even more when I go to the car next time. One thing that pisses me off is that the RPM gauge is still f**ked, I even resoldered the board twice and used copper paste on the silly screws that are used as connections. Next time I take it out I'll take apart the board and fit new components, I'll see if I can get a replacement IC for it.  I have an appointment set for 22nd of September for the engine tune to 370hp. Alignment also still needs to be done. My hope is that I can get all the legal stuff over with by the end of this season. Anyone of you have advice regarding intercoolers? Currently there is an APEXI core fitted, one of those weird hybrid ones, 600x270x76. I don't think it's bad but it's not new and now I still have the chance to change it now to legally include it in the paperwork. Only issue is that the only options that would arrive in time are a HKS Type R intercooler or generic Ebay spec intercoolers comparable to a JustJap one. Ideally I'd order a Plazmaman but it takes over a month to receive which would mean making the car legal has to wait until next season. Would love to hear some input on this. Same story for my injectors, the previous owner was a nunce and put ID 1050x on the engine. They work but are obviously not ideal at "normal" power levels. But I don't see a reason to change them unless the tuner says it's necessary. I read online before buying a different exhaust that the top secret style rear diffusers won't fit due to the size of the rear resonators. My buddy and I made it work by slightly "adjusting the shape" of the mounting bracket and making some spacers out of 3d print for the mounting bolts. Fits like a charm. Just putting this here in case someone has this problem. Even the hefty HKS Silent Hi Power rear can fits without hitting anything.
