r33 RB25DET running rich

I picked up my r33 a little while ago, its very stock (everything is factory besides atmo bov, pod filter, SAFC). It's running very rich, car distinctly smells of fuel. I've had a theory that it would be the atmo bov. I don't like the atmo bov so im going to go back to standard recirc valve, but I need opinions on the SAFC. Is it worth keeping and tuning to try run a bit leaner, or should i just remove it from the ECU?

Yep your theory is correct, get rid of that atmo bov. Should run way better then. The safc can probably stay for now but long term if you want to do more mods, get a proper ecu.

I've played with one a decade or so ago, but to keep things safe I retarded the cas by 3 degrees.

''played with one'', is not the same as taking the time to use them to their best effect. ie, who says you only use them for leaning out, mine adds fuel/pulls timing in top end due to boost increase.

@WMDC35I don't know anything about SAFC's/tuning etc, this is my first car (obviously my first import) just trying to learn as I go, so what is an AFM spacer?
Also i'm not really in a financial position to buy a whole new standalone ECU/Tune, so i'm tossing up whether to get the SAFC tuned or to remove it entirely, opinions?
Im searching around for a standard bov, ill let you guys know the results once that goes in!

they don't correct timing, show me how they correct timing.. enlighten me

hey simmer down now sex kitten....they do this in the same way that everyone likes to point out, when you lean them out  (by moving the signal lower down the load band) it can, but may not always, add in extra/excessive timing....and moving the signal up the load band in the same rpm scale to add more fuel by way of increased airflow signal can, but may not always, pull some timing out.

I would not consider them a suitable choice to 'tune' with but would consider them suitable to adjust a tune with.,,,if you get what I mean -  basically don't ask them to do too much.

I have found the main issue to be that with only hi and lo throttle adjustments the correction range is too broad, would be much better if there was a midrange throttle adjustment. But they aren't *shit*, just limited in their use. If OP is not in a position to buy a standalone as they say and already has an safc, then make the most of it.

I ran an SAFC with my high flowed RB25 BUT I also had an SITC (they are getting hard to find) to modify timing. Relatively crude but do-able. Obviously a proper ecu is better but I had these when I still had an auto box.

Hey guys I have an update
As of Friday, the car now has extreme trouble firing on warm start, cold start is perfectly fine, but the car just won't catch on warm start.
Beginning to wonder if my coolant temp sensor for the ECU is buggered, anybody know where i can buy one?

genuine ones from kudos Motorsport for around $40 from memory.

Delete the SAFC, it's probably bending too much of your AFM signal and giving you grief.

Too bad you're not in Sydney, would have recommended a Nistune.. if you still want the board, I'm able to get them below RRP for all SAU members.


Can you get me one ?
Do you install the board as i have a z32 ecu already to go

    • Agreed with the rest. Also at least based on my own research, there are no readily available stock or close-to-stock RB20Neo maps that you could download and use as a base were you to buy a complete standalone ECU, and the regular 20DET maps don't really work well so you'd need to take it to a tuner if you have no experience. I installed an AEM V2 on my 20Neo+T and had lots of headaches until I got it to run and idle properly but I've yet to remap it fully. You have to start building up your timing and fuel maps entirely from the ground up; even the ones for a 25 didn't work at all.
    • Got some decent progress after work yesterday and also today. Got the ECU all wired and passenger side interior all back together. Kept the wiring up nice and high to avoid people standing on it. Got the surge tank relays rewired and tidied up the pump wiring and cut a hole to bring the cables through.  I found a spare USB cable I had lying around so I decided to cut it up and see if I could use it for my CAN 1 bus. Turned out one of the pins I needed was to the shield of the cable so i cut it up and desoldered it and resoldered to the correct pins.  Had the issue with the powersteering hose hitting the A/C compressor and fan shroud. I pulled the bracket off and modified it to remove the front mounting point which now clears it all. Will keep an eye on it to see if theres any signs of fouling once it's up and running.
    • That's some good input mate. Nice.
    • So today I went well outside my comfort zone (again) to replace my valve cover gasket.  I have had a big leak over the exhaust leading to a lot of smoke and smell every time I drove it. The leak was in the rear driver's corner.  The job wasn't hard as such, just a bit finicky and time consuming.  The old gasket was rock hard and broken right where the leak was.  The leaky corner had so much sitting oil in it.  The good news to my amateur eyes was no buildup or sludge under the cover. It all looked fairly nice in there.   I haven't started it yet. I ran out of light and body when putting the coils and injector loom back in. Probs only 30min left for the morning.  I was so nervous putting the cover back on, I must have lifted it 5 times to make sure the gasket was still seated properly. God it's going to be nice to be leak free and not make other traffic light queuers think my car is about to explode.
