Bought 04 Maxima J31 from elderly couple

Once serviced and roadworthied I discovered Frankenstein engine under the bonnet

it has Infiniti Skyline Gt500 engine

but with a difference it has Aus maxima dual plane inlet manifold

Spoke with Ian Gibson USA Nissan Master tech- He has confirmed as engine number ends in A

No Australian Maxima engines ever did

Ian suggests approx 225 to 235 kw at flywheel

Car is quick as in from 4.9 to 5 .7 0 to 100 kph- best power under10 degrees Celsius

Has anyone else ever heard of or discovered such a rare thing.

seems unlikely, would need bit $$ spent, the higher powered VQ35 fitted to the V36 skyline were dual intake and were externally very different looking to the standard DE engine, it would require a complete ECU and wiring replacement as well as trying to get it talking to the factory auto TCU.

They were also a VQ35HR, not DE.

There also was no 'infiniti Skyline GT500'

There was a Skyline GT-R GT500 race model but it had a RB engine, not a VQ.

Even the V36 skyline with this engine won't do 4.9 sec 0-100 with it's 5sp auto, so I can't see a J31 managing this with it's 4sp slush box.

As above.. pictures please!

Hi All,

Updating mystery VQ35 de engine in J31 Maxima

So there are doubters

Well believe these facts as they actually happened

Driving to Sydney from Melbourne

Dragged Bf xr6 turbo with upgraded exhaust at a least most likely a tune etc

Maxima held and pulled past at around 190 Kph

Only slowly but did it stopped drag at 215 kph both of us backing off

Way back from Sydney ran VF SSV redline Ute big exhaust and cold air intake

Manual both dead even from 115kph till 180 then Max pulled like freight train

through to 230kph

SSV guy shattered

Max can beat 2017 VW GTi 7.5 performance edition to 100 kph by 3 lengths

known 6 second car

My mate Scott owns it and we have had over 50 runs

Max has 4 gears 3rd goes from 135 to 215 kph so monster pull from 170kph onwards

Timed Max near Camperdown 100 to 200kph

Constant 10-11 seconds with big pull 170 kph onwards

Two times in succession reeled in FG XR8 Sprint 100 kph to 230 kph Blown Miami V8 has 650  on over boost

Lost 10 car lengths when hit gas at 100 kph but slowly reeled him back at 170 gaining rapidly

on phone going I’m coming bro then at 200 up it’s ass saying get the f**k out of the way

Past it at 215 strongly his blower howling

And yes the sprint had the limiter removed for those who know

I can’t explain it guys

I work at a Nissan dealer

They all love it

One night only 2 car lengths behind a Mits Evo at 200 and holding

Known 4.5 second car it also has mods

Its fun

Scary as shit as chassis brakes and suspension can’t keep up with it all

Motor is what came with car

I think it has been a test mule for Nissan R & D

 Undisclosed  but exists

Still runs a sub Six 0 to 100 kph after Thousands of redline thrashings

One thing I do have to do is reset ecu very often

It richens mixture temporarily to protect engine as it retunes it’s own air fuel based off driving

After 3 or 4 days of 16 lph thrashings she settles to 12.5 lph

loses  power though

A good half second to full second 0 to 100

So there you go

Frankenstein engine punching well well above it’s weight

Honestly

It's not a fact when you haven't proven anything. You're a complete stranger on the internet and you expect us to take your word for it.

If you came here to beat your chest before the gullible, you're in for a rude shock. Photos, videos, timeslips, a visit to the dealership where you work, you name it, we expect to see it, not your empty words.

Accepted not here trying to prove anything It exists

Same as Hokden Australia placed L34 spec heads on 1974 Hj PRE pollution 308 motors but only  in Statesman and Monaro

Those motors had 275 hp plus same as 350 Chevy and kept up easily with them

Point being one of a few Aus J31 maximas with factory tinkering or as Nissan techs say maybe a Frankenstein

Infiniti G35 bottom end with Aus top end

VQ35 engine number ending in A

No disrespect but The VQ35 de is underrated as it’s expensive to unlock the power

Nissan Japan created my Maxima

maybe by mistake or possibly intent

It is a beautiful feeling watching the faces of people in modified or expensive high performance cars as my J31 pulls away from them

Current Kia Stinger

0 to 100 Maxima touching bumpers at 100

1 car length and done 3 to 5 times

Even when Maxima had burnt out O2 sensors and was drinking 21 Litres per 100 klms

Running With petrol smell flooded completely

well Stinger from Dig only 3 car lengths ahead

Gt mustangs I’m 2 to 3 car lengths ahead at 100

Heres a shocking one

Holds 17 to 18 Audi Rs 3 to about 60 koh

then Rs3 just explodes learnt my lesson on that one

Bur same drag done Twice with Rs3 driver then sling comes 17 Mustang GT

We both smashed him from a dig

He wouldn’t run us again and Rs3 driver was laughing at next set of lights

Ive had loads of guys I’ve beaten motion to me to open my window after running them

Saying is it boosted Nitrous etc

Evo Guy I worked with was shocked saying it doesn’t make sense not many guys keep up or get near him

We had done 3 dig pulls in a side street to 90 kph

He beat me but only by 1to 2 car lengths each time

We then went out onto main road and ran from 80 to 150 same result 2 car lengths and closing

Fg xr6 turbos non modded

Hangs with them and always a car length in front from a dig to 100

They are the most shocked but intrigued by the Maxima and often pull over to talk and see under my bonnet

Nissan got it right whatever they did

I have stock exhaust No tuning or chip

I have removed the front air intake over radiator to help breathing

Big difference and throaty air intake sound

Only slight difference is the engine rumbles a little at idle like slightly larger cam profiles

Also hates anything less than 98 Ron fuel like seriously hates it so suspecting slightly higher compression than stock

If the motor had been rebuilt who knows

older guy who owned it may have had it rebuilt after starving it of oil due to their consumption issues

It did have three broken engine mounts and two cvs were shot when I bought it with only 100,000 klms on the clock

Maybe the old guy who owned it had some fun too

In ending It’s genuine and honest

All that I’ve written

Cant explain it

I love driving it and have so much fun like the ultimate sleeper Grandpa car

I wish everyone all the best and respect everyone’s opinions

Sick story bro

amazing formatting.  Sounds like your world is amazing.

PUT IT DOWN A DRAG STRIP AND POST SLIP

stories don’t count for shit.
Even if it was what you claimed it wouldn’t be that quick

Thanks bro

As we all know that was in D for drive

Holding mobile and trying not to stack

When Vehicle stability is switched off and I stalk it up and shift manually gets to 100 a little quicker

Wished I had have held it to 200 plus so people could see the third gear pull from 170 to 215

I hope it helps people believe it exists

    • As discussed in the previous post, the bushes in the 110 needed replacing. I took this opportunity to replace the castor bushes, the front lower control arm, lower the car and get the alignment dialled in with new tyres. I took it down to Alignment Motorsports on the GC to get this work done and also get more out of the Shockworks as I felt like I wasn't getting the full use out of them.  To cut a very long story short, it ended up being the case the passenger side castor arm wouldn't accept the brand new bush as the sleeve had worn badly enough to the point you could push the new bush in by hand and completely through. Trying a pair of TRD bushes didn't fix the issue either (I had originally gone with Hardrace bushes). We needed to urgently source another castor arm, and thankfully this was sourced and the guys at the shop worked on my car until 7pm on a Saturday to get everything done. The car rides a lot nicer now with the suspension dialled in properly. Lowered the car a little as well to suit the lower profile front tyres, and just bring the car down generally. Eternally thankful for the guys down at the shop to get the car sorted, we both pulled big favours from our contacts to get it done on the Saturday.  Also plugged in the new Stedi foglights into the S15, and even from a quick test in the garage I'm keen to see how they look out on the road. I had some concerns about the length of the LED body and whether it'd fit in the foglight housing but it's fine.  I've got a small window coming up next month where I'll likely get a little paint work done on the 110 to remove the rear wing, add a boot wing and roof wing, get the side skirt fixed up and colour match the little panel on the tail lights so that I can install some badges that I've kept in storage. I'm also tempted to put in a new pair of headlights on the 110.  Until then, here's some more pictures from Easter this year.
    • I would put a fuel pressure gauge between the filter and the fuel rail, see if it's maintaining good fuel pressure at idle going up to the point when it stalls. Do you see any strange behavior in commanded fuel leading up to the point when it stalls? You might have to start going through the service manual and doing a long list of sensor tests if it's not the fuel system for whatever reason.
    • Hi,  Just joined the forum so I could share my "fix" of this problem. Might be of use to someone. Had the same hunting at idle issue on my V36 with VQ35HR engine after swapping the engine because the original one got overheated.  While changing the engine I made the mistake of cleaning the throttle bodies and tried all the tricks i could find to do a throttle relearn with no luck. Gave in and took it to a shop and they couldn't sort it. Then took it to my local Nissan dealership and they couldn't get it to idle properly. They said I'd need to replace the throttle bodies and the ecu probably costing more than the car is worth. So I had the idea of replacing the carbon I cleaned out with a thin layer of super glue and it's back to normal idle now. Bit rough but saved the car from the wreckers 🤣
    • After my last update, I went ahead with cleaning and restoring the entire fuel system. This included removing the tank and cleaning it with the Beyond Balistics solution, power washing it multiple times, drying it thoroughly, rinsing with IPA, drying again with heat gun and compressed air. Also, cleaning out the lines, fuel rail, and replacing the fuel pump with an OEM-style one. During the cleaning process, I replaced several hoses - including the breather hose on the fuel tank, which turned out to be the cause of the earlier fuel leak. This is what the old fuel filter looked like: Fuel tank before cleaning: Dirty Fuel Tank.mp4   Fuel tank after cleaning (some staining remains): Clean Fuel Tank.mp4 Both the OEM 270cc and new DeatschWerks 550cc injectors were cleaned professionally by a shop. Before reassembling everything, I tested the fuel flow by running the pump output into a container at the fuel filter location - flow looked good. I then fitted the new fuel filter and reassembled the rest of the system. Fuel Flow Test.mp4 Test 1 - 550cc injectors Ran the new fuel pump with its supplied diagonal strainer (different from OEM’s flat strainer) and my 550cc injectors using the same resized-injector map I had successfully used before. At first, it idled roughly and stalled when I applied throttle. Checked the spark plugs and found that they were fouled with carbon (likely from the earlier overly rich running when the injectors were clogged). After cleaning the plugs, the car started fine. However, it would only idle for 30–60 seconds before stalling, and while driving it would feel like a “fuel cut” after a few seconds - though it wouldn’t fully stall. Test 2 – Strainer swap Suspecting the diagonal strainer might not be reaching the tank bottom, I swapped it for the original flat strainer and filled the tank with ~45L of fuel. The issue persisted exactly the same. Test 3 – OEM injectors To eliminate tuning variables, I reinstalled the OEM 270cc injectors and reverted to the original map. Cleaned the spark plugs again just in-case. The stalling and “fuel cut” still remained.   At this stage, I suspect an intermittent power or connection fault at the fuel pump hanger, caused during the cleaning process. This has led me to look into getting Frenchy’s fuel hanger and replacing the unit entirely. TL;DR: Cleaned and restored the fuel system (tank, lines, rail, pump). Tested 550cc injectors with the same resized-injector map as before, but the car stalls at idle and experiences what feels like “fuel cut” after a few seconds of driving. Swapped back to OEM injectors with original map to rule out tuning, but the issue persists. Now suspecting an intermittent power or connection fault at the fuel pump hanger, possibly cause by the cleaning process.
