Is my timing chain too loose?

Look at videos on youtube the timing chain sits straight across the top with no  'U' shape in the middle between the 2 camshafts. but mine seems to have some play. (Keep in mind when i opened the engine there was no upper chain timing guide, apparently i need it but im not sure. Do I need it? is it a must?)

Just now, Rusty Nuts said:

Mate, cost conscious manufacturers don't usually add parts that are not needed. So put it back on. The chain is probably old and stretched.

Yeah that's true but what is the purpose on the guide here? I can only think so it doesnt go upwards for some reason.

Have not worked on this particular engine but on others it prevents the chain bouncing upwards and removing chunks of valve cover and can prevent it jumping off the cogs. Hence its name "guide"
