I posted that onto the R32 GTR Australia FB Page and ripped appart. LOL's

All I wanted to do was show that some modern tech used in a "Moderate" twin set up would be a good street car with a stealth appearance. These were run on pretty basic US fuel too so i would expect the setups to perform differently with some Corn Syrup but don't let that distract you from the fact that Hector will be running 3 SPOON engines!

Not everyone is looking be fully hectic as WSID Bro.....

I have to go stealth so we’ll see what the HKS GT3-SS “modern” turbos do. It’ll be the only modified part on the car.

Jeez the jap brands stop developing new products in the late 90s

 

Garret / precision would surely be a better option than HKS?

My goal was to find the smallest aftermarket bolt-on twin turbo. The HKS GT3-SS is the smallest turbo out there, to the extent that it cannot sustain much more than ~1.35 bar at high RPM due to the small turbine, which basically means that it was competing with -7s and -9s. From what I've seen it is roughly competitive with -7s in terms of peak power, but is capable of delivering a lot more power down in the 4000 RPM range. -9s can deliver more peak power, but the narrower compressor map seems to affect how well they respond down low.

The GT3-SS is also a pretty new turbo, came out ~4 years ago, I don't put a lot of stock into their marketing literature but they basically admit in it that they've just borrowed a turbo from a more recent engine and modified it to suit the RB26.

I would love to buy the MHI turbo that it's based on and not pay a thousand dollars for an HKS logo, unfortunately nobody is really interested in figuring those pesky details out. Doesn't seem like anyone is really interested in small power builds these days.

Flip at JMS in Adelaide loves the new range of HKS twins and he may be worth a quick call to get some feedback on them.

It remains to be seen what the real results are. I would really hope that for the money and with over 10 years HKS can beat a set of -7s. 

Replying with comments that insinuate that If someone makes money from a product then there is an assumed underlying deceptive motive, really doesn't help the OP.

Surely you all get paid for work you do or profit from a business you own so is this not the EXACT same thing you are accusing others of??

I would suggest pointing out that you don't neccisarly need  to believe what people say when they are trying to sell you stuff is a fairly sensible suggestion.

sorry your feelings were hurt. My head doesn't pull in so not sure how to move forward from here.

The real question I guess is, what does the "new" HKS GTIII-SS Mitsubishi journal bearing chra turbo magically achieve that the Garrett can't in the real world when it comes to performance and REAL, quantifiable, tangible positive results. I am guessing it won't do anything better anywhere, and end up being a complete waste of time and money over just getting the Garrett turbos. Don't believe the hype man.

Mate, I think you should have just bought -9s (now gt2859-2) for a better all around result. That said, being in the Californ-i-a maybe the best GTR is a stock, unmodified GTR ? Seems all too hard there.

We'll have to see, worst case I replace the turbos when they blow up or when the engine gets pulled again. The US tuners with dyno sheets on the GT3-SS don't have a financial interest in selling an HKS turbo over a Garrett turbo, even if they play games with correction factors and inflate numbers I'm looking for relative comparisons. The data I've seen so far suggests that worst case, it's a minor improvement over -9s in the mid-range and isn't as capable for power. Best case I'll be able to get close to the "as advertised" torque curve here with VCAM step 1B, which would really be incredible: image.png.04da507c460455c8b5a93dacccb6e3be.png

I'm really not wedded to making a ton of power, at the end of the day this is a street-tailored car and power delivery is more important than what the number says.

    • Hi all,   long time listener, first time caller   i was wondering if anyone can help me identify a transistor on the climate control unit board that decided to fry itself   I've circled it in the attached photo   any help would be appreciated
    • I mean, I got two VASS engineers to refuse to cert my own coilovers stating those very laws. Appendix B makes it pretty clear what it considers 'Variable Suspension' to be. In my lived experience they can't certify something that isn't actually in the list as something that requires certification. In the VASS engineering checklist they have to complete (LS3/NCOP11) and sign on there is nothing there. All the references inside NCOP11 state that if it's variable by the driver that height needs to maintain 100mm while the car is in motion. It states the car is lowered lowering blocks and other types of things are acceptable. Dialling out a shock is about as 'user adjustable' as changing any other suspension component lol. I wanted to have it signed off to dissuade HWP and RWC testers to state the suspension is legal to avoid having this discussion with them. The real problem is that Police and RWC/Pink/Blue slip people will say it needs engineering, and the engineers will state it doesn't need engineering. It is hugely irritating when aforementioned people get all "i know the rules mate feck off" when they don't, and the actual engineers are pleasant as all hell and do know the rules. Cars failing RWC for things that aren't listed in the RWC requirements is another thing here entirely!
    • I don't. I mean, mine's not a GTR, but it is a 32 with a lot of GTR stuff on it. But regardless, I typically buy from local suppliers. Getting stuff from Japan is seldom worth the pain. Buying from RHDJapan usually ends up in the final total of your basket being about double what you thought it would be, after all the bullshit fees and such are added on.
    • The hydrocarbon component of E10 can be shittier, and is in fact, shittier, than that used in normal 91RON fuel. That's because the octane boost provided by the ethanol allows them to use stuff that doesn't make the grade without the help. The 1c/L saving typically available on E10 is going to be massively overridden by the increased consumption caused by the ethanol and the crappier HC (ie the HCs will be less dense, meaning that there will definitely be less energy per unit volume than for more dense HCs). That is one of the reasons why P98 will return better fuel consumption than 91 does, even with the ignition timing completely fixed. There is more energy per unit volume because the HCs used in 98 are higher density than in the lawnmower fuel.
    • No, I'd suggest that that is the checklist for pneumatic/hydraulic adjustable systems. I would say, based on my years of reading and complying with Australian Standards and similar regulations, that the narrow interpretation of Clause 3.2 b would be the preferred/expected/intended one, by the author, and those using the standard. Wishful thinking need not apply.
