I bought in 2 shipments tein super street coilover $1253 and Nismo 555cc Injectors $939 as the weight was to large for 1 shipment through Perfect Run www.perfectrun.com.au;

Shipment 1.

3 of Tein Dampers + Nismo injectors: shipping costs = A$313

Shipment 2.

1 of Tein Damper: shipping costs = A$154

Shipment 1 has ben charged an customs assesment notice with;

Declared Value US57000

Customs Value A$718.79

Customs Duty $107.82

GST $112.93

Amount Due $220.75

Do I have to pay all this? Is this amount fair customs duty is 15% of value seem to be coorect? Do I or perfect run have to pay the GST as it does not say on the website GST is not included? I have sent perfect run an email as well and am waiting on them to reply.

I got a reply from perfect run the declared value is Japenese yen and the duty is correct 15% and GST is 10% of duty plus shipping but he say I have to pay GST "When you order the products, we didn't charge you any GST at all, which means we cannot pay GST. Australian government charges the GST as a part of the import taxes and all these import taxes charged by Australian government need to pay on your side." which I'm still not sure about has it does not say GST not included on website?

Yes mate, often it comes without duty if it sneaks through, but in theory the importer is responsible for paying GST and Stamp Duty. Since you are the importer you are out of luck.

GST is an Aus only thing, a company in Japan is under no obligation to charge it.

Mate you have a declared value of $57,000 US, I take it that is a type on your part here not what is on the customs docs?

I was stung the same way when I bought my car in and car bits in it. The customs broker called up and started chatting about what was in the car and the values, he said "this isnt for tax purposes" so I gladly told him as I felt an obligation to. I recieve the invoice for the customs and I have been taxed on all the car bits. Fortunately they were not for me and the other guy didnt mind paying. Paid nearly $3000 in tax all up for my stuff.

That looks like it should read ¥57,000. Apart from that the calculations look correct.

Duncan's right though - no matter where you get parts from, if you are importing them then you are liable to pay GST and Import Duties to the Government. Same as when you import a car.

OK digging up this old thread to ask my question (I believe in recycling :( )... what about fees on importing USED parts?

I imagine Import Duties would still be payable - but what about GST - coz isnt that only charged on new goods - not second hand? (eg there's no GST on second hand cars is there?) So for example if I imported a second hand set of rims - would there be GST as well as duties?

Secondly - saw on today's Budget announcement by Costello a quick flash up on the TV screen saying "Import Tariffs Abolished" - anyone know what that relates too?

False declaration saying it's a gift is an offense. Where in the law book and how, not sure but I've been assured by a number of Customs officers that it is. Better be safe than sorry.

I've bought things from Greenline and they refused to mark it as a gift for this reason and it's easily understood I suppose.

I'm also thinking about getting some parts over from the US (cause there so damn cheap) my sisters over there was thinking of getting her to buy it there, then send back to herself or me.

Will she get taxed if it's hers getting sent back here? for herself

Also wondering what/if people have paid for air feight from US it will be probably be a big box and hopefully under 400 kgs

I just imported a HKS GTSS turbo kit for my GTR, i bought it through Greenline. Paid $3430, customs wanted 10% GST plus a $48.85 fee (cant remember what for). Total $377 fee. The box was marked as a gift and I showed the receipt from greenline to the customs office.

This is the biggest and most expensive item ive had imported and had been lucky enough to of not of paid GST before. So yeh $377 on a $3400 turbo kit isn't bad..Still some $2000 cheaper than buying retail here in Australia.

Just got a turbo sent from OS, got caught up with customs. The customs guy told me a grand was the limit, anything more you got slugged.

yup $500 is the threshold. I've been asked many times by customs on second hand parts to prove that they were less than that value.

Also keep in mind the $500 includes the cost of shipping as well as the original purchase price :angry:

    • You won't need to do that if your happy to learn to tune it yourself. You 100% do not need to do that. It is not part of the learning process. It's not like driving on track and 'finding the limit by stepping over the limit'. You should not ever accidently blow up an engine and you should have setup the ECU's engine protection to save you from yourself while you are learning anyway. Plenty of us have tuned their own cars, myself included. We still come here for advice/guidance/new ideas etc.  What have you been doing so far to learn how to tune?
    • Put the ECU's MAP line in your mouth. Blow as hard as you can. You should be able to see about 10 kPa, maybe 15 kPa positive pressure. Suck on it. You should be able to generate a decent vacuum to about the same level also. Note that this is only ~2 psi either way. If the MAP is reading -5 psi all the time, ignition on, engine running or not, driving around or not, then it is severely f**ked. Also, you SHOULD NOT BE DRIVING IT WITHOUT A LOAD REFERENCE. You will break the engine. Badly.
    • Could be correct. Meter might be that far out. Compare against a known 5 ohm 1% resistor.
    • @Murray_Calavera  If I were an expert I wouldn't be in here looking for assistance.  I am extremely computer literate, have above average understanding on how things should be working and how they should tie together.  If I need to go to a professional tuner so be it, but I'd much rather learn and do things myself even if it means looking for some guidance along the way and blowing up a few engines. @GTSBoy  I was hoping it would be as simple as a large vacuum leak somewhere but I'm unable to find anything, all lines seem to be well capped or going where they need to be, and when removed there is vacuum felt on the tube.  It would be odd for the Haltech built in MAP to be faulty, the GTT tune I imported had it enabled from the start, I incorrectly assumed it was reading a signal from the stock MAP, but that doesn't exist.  After running a vacuum hose to the ECU the signal doesn't change more than 0.2 in either direction.   I'll probably upload a video of my settings tomorrow, as it stands I'm able to daily drive, but getting stuttering when giving it gas from idle, so pulling away from lights is a slow process of revving it up and feathering the clutch until its moving, then it will accelerate fine.  It sounds like I need to get to the bottom of the manifold pressure issue, but the ignition timing section is most intimidating to me and will probably let a pro do that part.  Tomorrow I'll try a different vacuum line to T off of, with any luck I selected one that was already bypassed during the DBW swap.  (edit: I went out and did it right now, the line I had chosen did appear to have no vacuum on it, it used to go to the front of the intake, I've now completely blocked that one off at the bracket that holds several vacuum lines by the firewall.  I T'd into the vacuum line that goes from that bracket to the vacuum pump at the front of the car, but no change in the MAP readings).  Using the new vacuum line that has obvious vacuum on the hose, im still only getting readings between -6.0 and -5.2.  I'm wondering why the ECU was detecting -5.3 when nothing was connected to the MAP nipple and ECU MAP selected as the source. @feartherb26  I do have +T in the works but wanted to wait until Spring to start with that swap since this is my good winter AWD vehicle.  When removing the butterfly, did it leave a bunch of holes in the manifold that you needed to plug?  I thought about removing it but assumed it would be a mess.   I notice no difference when capping the vacuum line to it or letting it do its thing.  This whole thing has convinced me to just get a forward facing manifold when the time comes though.
    • Update: tested my spark plugs that are supposed to be 5ohms with a 10% deviation and one gave me a 0 ohms reading and the rest were 3.9ohm<, so one bad and the others on their way out.
