pentae
Just received this from K Beazley: Thank you for your email concerning the Federal Government's plans torestrict imports of motor vehicles older than 15 years old. I apologise for the delay in replying to you. The Federal Government's announcement on 7 February this year that it is intending to change import arrangements for older (used) classic or historic vehicles has understandably caused a great deal of distress amongst certain sectors of our community. While there may be sound environmental and safety reasons for making the changes to the import arrangements, this has not been adequately communicated by the Federal Government to the broader public. The Government has also failed to provide adequate information about the circumstances under which older vehicles may continue to be imported into Australia. To date it is still unclear as to when the Government will introduce these changes to the Motor Vehicle Standards Regulations 1989 into the Parliament. I understand that the Regulations are still being drafted. Be assured that the Australian Labor Party will assess the proposed amendments and their impact in the development of our position. Thank you once again for your concern regarding this matter. I'm 37, not some young whippersnapper wanting to get into a high performance grey import. I like to change my cars reglularly - Currently have imported a Mitsubishi Pajero 4WD diesel. I also imported a Toyota Soarer for my 65 year old father. How I am I going to do this when the law changes ? It's just not fair. And I'm not happy about it, along with many others. Hopefully you guys can see the injustice in all of this and stop Jim Lloyd from ruining my life. Thanks for listening. nare
Does that mean we can still import R32's and 300's until they "gazette" the rule? Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/63817-15-year-rule-is-officially-over/page/8/#findComment-1289634 Share on other sites

funkymonkey
hehe... wierd email to get a response to... perhaps a constituent of Brand? but yes, that link pred posted is the government gazette archive. It should appear in those gazettes, and when it does, that's when the amendments take effect. mini2
Sometimes those pollies aren't useless I suppose and probably the Labor folks figured out there could be quite a few votes at stake if they don't do something. machg
Ok guys, Whats going to happen when the law changes (to 1989 model cars?) Will we be able to import models from 1989 up until the corresponding date of the change? E.g. law changes in June, we can bring in cars up until May 1989 under the 15 year old compliance rule? Or is it going to be BANG, no one can import ANY 1989 model cars after the date of the law change (except for those with cars already on the way)? How will the rego authorities know if the vehicle is elligible under the 15 year old rule, do you get a certificate or something? Cheers, machg Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/63817-15-year-rule-is-officially-over/page/8/#findComment-1313613 Share on other sites

eikcam
Just received the following from the j-spec teams mailing list... "It appears that the changes to the 15 year old import rule are finally going to happen according to information received today from the office of Hon Jim Lloyd MP. The continuation of the 15 year old scheme has exceeded most people`s estimated timeframe since the announcement was made in early February that the laws would change. Although there has been a lot of rumour about such changes, J-Spec now has information directly from the Minister`s office that they are aiming for the changes to be entered onto the Federal Register (Gazette) in the second or third week of May. For those who have still not taken advantage of this last opportunity yet but still wish to import a good 1989 - 1990 model car at at a low price, you now know how much time is left. As has always been the case, J-Spec will accept new clients who wish to look for 15 year old vehicles, and we will be offering a full refund if we can`t find a suitable car before the laws change." Was fun whilst it lasted :`( Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/63817-15-year-rule-is-officially-over/page/8/#findComment-1322976 Share on other sites
