Painting and Powder coating rocker covers

hey there guys

i am using metalcast paint but the job i want done is gold that will be blend/fade into red

how will this be done??

silver base

then put the red down on the half with it fading back, then do the rest in the gold

just watch the metal cast red, it goes orangish on the engine covers after a few weeks

run a test piece first, you will need to see how much effect the gold has over the red, it looks like a translucent gold so it shouldnt me too over powering of the red, just have to get the fade to be neat with the red as the main concern

Hey guys, I am in the process of cleaning some RB20 covers and then painting them. Sanding them back, not to bare metal but enough to give the paint a good base to stick to.

I bought these covers and they aren't off my car. One of the hose fittings was rusted and I planned on removing it and putting my good ones in once they have been painted.

It took me a little while to figure out how to remove them, they turned but didn't appear to be coming out. So I drilled a small hole on the inside of the cover, through the baffle on the inside and knocked the fitting out with a mallet and punch.

I have also degreased them and washed them out. But will be cleaning them again once completely sanded back and then taping them and giving them a final clean with some wax and grease remover before painting. My question now is will me having drilled a hole in the baffle make any difference to its purpose??? I presume it is there purely to prevent oil from being sucked out and to only remove vapour???? any thoughts would be appreciated

Heres a little sneek peek at a crazy conversion i am helping out with.

The Red is a Candy Red powdercoat and the rocker covers are a wrinkle black powdercoat.

I coated these myself here at home.

The best way to remove these breathers is the put them (the breathers) in a vice, upside down, then hit upwards with a rubber mallet.

yeah I figured out how to remove them but need to know if me drilling a hole in the baffle will in any way hinder their use?????

im doing my 26 covers atm and will be using the new Metalcast smoke colour. Thing with metal cast paint is that it requires a shiny surface underneath before the paint goes on to get the good effect. I have tried using normal primer on a test item and it looked crap. There is a special primer for the metalcast paint that is shiny but i couldnt find it or order it in anywhere in wa. So im polishing my covers to get the shine and then paint

Process so far has been

Paint stipper

Paint stripper again

Sand

Sand again finer

Polishing wheel for hours

clean

paint

Its a long process. Hope to have pics up soon

alot of outlay for equipment then learning, im setting this up as a weekend business for extra cash, this isnt something that you can pick up and do, theres some specialised guns and powders etc that you need. if you just wanna do your covers then doing it yourself isnt cost effective

Im wondering if there is a guide anywhere on the net that shows a step by step method of removing the RB26 rocker covers... most of it is self explanatory but im particularly concerned about removing the CAS... Can anyone shed some light?

CAS is simply 3 bolts

remove the cas then pull the rubber seal that contains the spacers off the front cover.

this way everything is prepped and painted.

when bolting it all up, just get it as close as possible to where it was prior to removal, then have it tuned up with a timing light to 15 BTDC.

there is no way to mark the position prior to paint since the paint covers any marks you make.

hey guys i got the dupli colour red and it comes out a dull colour ey nothing like geoffs mine looks shit, do u have to use a chrome base or silver to get a good colour?

i used the dupli colour last week. i used there recommended undercoat and the first one came up really good. the second one was flat and dul. then had a few more goes at it and got it just as shiny

    • Just checking; you are buying an aftermarket headlight for your V35, and the new headlight comes with a daylight running light that you want to wire in? You have the option of just not wiring the DRL in, and the new headlight will work like the old. If you want the DRL to work you will have to wire it in on the car as it wasn't delivered with one. Best way is to add a Normally Closed or Changeover relay in the car, and wire: 87a to both DRL power wires 30 to a fused ignition power source 86 to earth 85 tap into the power wire that goes to the low beam headlight Note, you cannot use the much more common Normally Open relay for this, you need the DRL to turn off when the headlight is on and vice versa.
    • Hi i do buy a aftermarket headlight on ebay. For v35 skyline coupe. I know that its a plug and play and just use the old low beam light and balast from old headlight. But my problem is i dnt have knowlage on car and electrical thing. And the head light getnon ebay is the wire for halo ring light is not connected. I talk to the seller and he said that. What white and black wire for halo robg light is need to connect to RDL. Running day light. Anyone here can tell me how to connect it to Rdl? Which wire is yhe RDL?
    • Hey Kaz, Unfortunately I am not at home currently and wont be for a few more months so I do not have access to my files or CAD. And at this point I prefer to keep the files to myself as I want to potentially make a few more pairs and see if they will sell within the EU before openly marketing them. But the way it's shaped and how small it is, I don't think you can fit both an indicator and a fog light onto the same surround, unless they were very small LED-type clusters.
    • I’ve just installed a Uniclutch sport into my R32. I’ve been blown away by it… it drives like a stock Toyota Corolla. It doesn’t make sense to me that a performance clutch can drive this well. I was about to pull the trigger on a Nismo Coppermix twin plate when I discovered the Uniclutch and decided to give that a shot instead. They’ve changed the game and I couldn’t be happier.    I was previously using an Extreme cushioned button clutch with lightened flywheel. I’m still using the same lightened flywheel with the Uniclutch.
