well i would think the HKS kit is very good. some of the difference between the steps is as follows.

step 2 has coated pistons

step 3 has rods with 22mm pins and the coated pistons

they all have H beam rods, step 1 and 2 are stock pin size step 3 are 22mm pin. they all have fully forged counter balanced cranks with a stroke designed to give 2.8l capacity (not sure if there is a difference between the cranks). Step 2 and 3 have a coating on the piston crowns and skirts and step 3 have titanium coated top rings. I have to say the HKS pistons are among the nicest i've ever seen. they are a piece of work.

i think comparing the step 1 kit to the crower kit is more than fair. HKS have invested more money in HKS parts that crower could ever dream of. yes they have great rep in stroker kits, but no where near the RB26 experience of HKS who have been developing parts specifically for RB26 since ~1990.

I'm guessing you mean 'more money in RB26 parts'; Crower is "fairly" :wave: big in the US scene,

and the US scene is a "fairly" :wub: big market :D;) And no argument there; I don't think they even

do stuff specially for the RB26.

Not at all, that's exactly the info that I was looking for; I think perhaps R31Nismoid has mis-interpreted

what I was saying (to try to restate - "worst" means "worst that HKS offers" not "worst on offer";

and I've inferred "worst" from "cheapest"; don't know how to make it clearer). The Crower kit

costs roughly the same as a duty-exempt HKS step-1 kit (don't think that can happen, but you

never know ;))

Yes, the step-3 stuff looks awesome, and yes, it has a pricetag that's several thousand dollars more.

But if the step-1 stuff is the goods, a buyer should look very closely at it since it's a few gorillas

cheaper than step-2 or 3, OR anything similar from Tomei or Jun.

just to add another angle - anyone noticed that 'cosworth' are now doing the internal parts for the RB26 - currently looking for a Aust distributor. I say'cosworth', as it is not cosworth as we traditionally know it - they are now owned by Mahle.... reason - because Mahle saw that cosworth had the reputation and expertise to both bring Mahle into the more mainstream arena and provide some excellent technical knowledge. This came from reading an interview of the CEO (or equiv, Dr someone...) of Mahle.

I know what I would be getting if I was rebuilding my RB26!! :nyaanyaa:

saliya, i havent bought any step 1 gear, but i did take some pics of it last time i was in japan, i will try and did the pics out. as far as i know the main differences between 1 and 3 is the coatings, the rings and the pin size. i still think the step 1 stuff would be comparable with most other brands of forgies.

but say my crank is f**ked, what crank could i then use to suit the n1 oil pump? say a standard r33 gtr crank? would this need a collar as well?

so the standard conrods will be fine to make say 400 4wkws (530 horsies)? just using new conrod bolts.

any good suggestion for pistons and rings for this kinda power rating?

change the standard head bolts to new ones? or will the old 1's be ok?

what thinkness metal head gaskit would suit what i am going for? as im going to buy a metal gaskit kit.

Yes, a standard 33 gtr crank is fine with the N1 oil pump.

No collar modification is needed for the 33 gtr crank.

The standard rods will be fine at this power level.

Any reputable piston brand will do - Weisco, ACL etc

there is no such thing as an n1 crank, the n1 pump will fit over any rb26 or rb25 crank (although there are some bolt to block differences on earlt rb26s).

most 32 cranks (except 94 onwards) have a smaller oil pump drive, this is not ideal although you can fit a collar to address this potential problem. but using a 32 crank without a collar is not some automatic engine death sentance

In fact, an emerging problem is with the screws holding the backing plate onto the oil pump working loose. It's a must do job to remove those screws and loctite them in when the opportunity presents.

By the time you land it it will be over $1500, a lot of money for used Nissan crank when they were only about $1000 here, when they were available .

    • Let me assume that the concern over a manual ECU is that the NeoDET that you have was an auto and has an auto ECU. That ECU will not be a problem, but you WILL have to Nistune it. And you would have to Nistune it even if you had a manual ECU, because the turbo ECUs will shit the bed if they do not have all the things that they were told they have to have, to be happy. The big one being the TCS CU, which you won't have in your car. Anyway, with an auto ECU (which I have running my originally auto NeoDET in an R32) Nistune allows you to put in a Stagea image which doesn't panic about the absent TCS, and allows you to override a whle bunch of other annoyances that would otherwise see the check engine light on 100% of the time. Also, you can't wind up the power very far on the stock NeoDET ECUs without Nistune, because the boost sensor gets in the way. Nistune allows you to push that problem much further up the dial. Do you even have the boost sensor with the engine? Without it, you are SOL and will need an aftermarket ECU (or to find a sensor somewhere, god knows where). I can't tell you what the wiring loom differences are in a 34. But what Duncan said above needs to be considered. When you say "loom", does that include the transmission loom? Because you will need to swap out the auto tranny loom for the equivalent manual loom, and get rid of the neutral/park start interlock (basically hot wire it).
    • I have had the r3c in for years now, maybe close to 7 years and it has never missed a beat, anyone can drive it. Super easy to drive around town, the hotter it gets does get a little hard but it holds the power easy as 
    • Shit thing to find eh? I guess the big issue is that whatever "fix" you do now, it might slow the rust down but won't fix it. I just wanted to add that in no way is fixing sheet metal in 3 dimensions the place to start with welding....that is a pro only job because its too hard to work out where things should be, let alone doing a clean enough job that it can look OK and still be strong too.  I needed to get a new rear quarter panel on the GTR and it took a pro weeks to get the old one off cleanly, new one on in the right place and looking somewhat like it should have with most of the previous connecting panels in place. Gluing a couple of bits of metal together with a welder in the garage is doable, but that is totally different to doing panel  replacement
    • This seems to be a very popular swap since all the turbo skyline prices went through the roof! I'll let someone more familiar chime in, but I understand that yes you probably want to swap the loom in to swap out the auto TCM stuff. You should not assume everything just plugs in either, you need to check at least the ECU wiring diagram for any differences at the plug at the left headlight and probably the ones near the ECU that join the dash loom too  
    • hows it fellas, my first post here which seems crazy cos half the forums i read are like the same age as me haha. to make a long story short ive got an r34 sedan (rb25de neo auto) which im swapping to a s0/s1? rb25det, r33 big box and nismo gt pro lsd. i have the motor and gearbox all bolted up outside the car, old motor and trans out. i bought the motor with stock ecu and loom, do i switch over to that? or will it be easier to get a r34 manual ecu and keep the loom if thats even possible.  also engine mounts look different, anything else thats different or incompatible? cheers, hope this all makes sense Paddy
