We need to get hold of the comms and distance tracking gear for targa, and are after people's experience.

The other car in the team runs a Terratrip 303 Plus and a Terraphone, both have worked fine but they are a bit pricey.

Are there any other products worth looking at or should we just bite the bullet?

Features we need (I think):

* Distance indicator (stage and total)

* Stopwatch

* 2x helmet mics and speakers, and noise cancelling mike. Sound output to video camera.

What else should we look out for?

Mychron is useless for heklping the navigator work out how far through a stage they are, and talking the driver. SAwesome pieces of kit for the money, but not really what you need if your doing a rally

Yeh they make killa dash's, and can save having guages everywhere, As i havn't really done any "research" on them, just a suggestion, They use Terratrip in Classic Adelaide also.......... seems to be one to use, might have to bite that bullet and run with one of those then!

Anyone coming over for Classics? Someones gotta knock off Broadbent and Richo in thier Porsches! Starts next month i believe!

yeah, shhhh it's a secret. just dont sit on the bonnet whilst the GTR is hurling along one of the stages at Targa. or you'll hear Jim Richards say:

oh-oh, we've got a 10-38, outsider blabbing about auto-drive system.

Should have a few options for you by weeks end, inc cheapest new Terra Trips in Vic (Price for ppl that know ppl, that know ppl, that know ppl who work with ppl) LOL, which is probably more then retail :P

From what i was just told the only option is Terratrip if you want LCD screen, though if you are happy with LEDs then there are cheaper alternatives like old Haldas/Zeron/Helius...checking on the prices guys want for their old ones laying around

duncan if you want to have a look at a car with the terratrip and a chat with the owner, ray dean with the hr31 gts-r has one in his car. he's done numerous rallies including targa a few times so yeah if you want to check out it's functions in a running car maybe speak to him

he lives up castle hill way. if keen, pm me

cheers, mark

  • 4 weeks later...
Thanks guys

so far they seem to be veeeeeeeeery expensive stopwatches.

No, they are very cheap rally navigation aids... Longhurst's car is one of the rare ones that has none. Poor bugger struggling for budget, I guess he had to cut corners somewhere.

At around 1100 for both, makes for lot less strees in the cab. If you have a big exhaust and the sound deadening removed, even the Terra Phone struggles - without it your navigator might as well be a mute.

It all depends on the navigator. If you have good recce and note many check objects for when he falls off the notes... then Terra trip not required, just use odometer on transports.

However if your nav gets lost, you get wrong call because he cant get back on the notes... Those expensive stop watches will appear very cheap compared to the repair bill.

You have been there Duncan - there are many to things that make the job easier... Trip meters are just part of the equation.

Hook up with a dirt guy and lease theirs for a cartoon of P155. - Another option.

TT

Your TT entry was on my desk an hour ago Duncan... thumbs up from me!

To me distance devices are pointless if you are using pace notes. Just reset the speedo on the touring stages and you'll be fine, at TT you'll generally be following cars anyway on the open road.

I have used Peltor in car comms and work a treat, very clear but you don't have individual controls for nav and driver to raise or lower the sound. Terra Trip do. There is also a cost effective Sparco kit that does the rounds on Ebay (new). A mate bought one and used it at TT last year, worked well. Came with amp and heatsets for the cost of just a Peltor amp.

Duncan, it's my belief that you certainly don't need a 303+ (although we do use one) for an event like Targa, a simple 202 is more than adequate. As a nav (and we always pace-note), I find it absolutely neccessary to have some form of very accurate trip meter in front of me, as often the driver is too busy in his own little word to give me distances even on a transport. AND, they are very useful for notifying the driver when an obstacle may be coming up (car off, dead 'roo, whatever) when you've been notified by stage officials.

As for coms, we use a Peltor with the audio outlet, works fine, but does cancel a fair bit of the car sound out when recording to tape. So maybe there's something better for getting all the sounds onto tape???

Thanks for the input everyone, TT I totally agree a terratrip is a lot cheaper than putting a new front end on the car :teehee: I guess I'm just trying to see how much it will really help keep me on the black stuff.

I'm a novice driver, Kel's a novice navigator so I don't want to spend money I don't have to.

Having said that, the more I ask and research the surer I am that I should grab one (probably 202) just to give ourselves the best chance of getting back in one piece.

We're also going to be buying notes not doing our own (no time for a full rece and we'd have no idea anyway). I guess the main thing is to get as much practice on reading (and listening) to notes as we can.

t01-100, I didn't realise you worked for those guys....guess I didn't get the answers wrong then lol!

    • That still isn't a lot to go on. I don't have a Y50 Fuga Head Unit wiring diagram. I can say that a lot of nissans of that age shared head unit plugs, so if you are in Australia something like this would probably help: https://aerpro.com/app091# You plug that into the car loom, then either plug the head unit ISO into that (if it has ISO), or you buy and ISO adapter harness that you wire in. Bit of stuffing around, but once you have ISO its easy to change things in future.
    • It is a kunfine Android screen . Does anyone know the wirering diagram of the fuga ??
    • just an update to this, poor man pays twice  Tried sanding down the pulleys but it didnt do the trick. Chucked another second hand alternator in the na car which I got for free off my mate and its fixed the squelling. Must have been unlucky with the bearings.    As for my turbo car, I managed to pick up a cwc rb alternator conversion bracket + LS alternator for 250 off marketplace, looked to be in really good nick. Installed it , started the car and its not charging the battery.... ( Im not good with auto elec stuff so im not sure if this was all I needed to do but I verified such by using a multimeter on the battery when the engine was running and I was only getting 12.2v )   I had to modify the earth strap for the new LS alternator , factory earth strap was a 10mm bolt which did not fit the bolt on the LS alternator which was double the size so I cut it off , went to repco bought some ring terminals that fit, crimped it onto the old earth strap and bolted it up to the alternator , started the car and same issue. Ran like shit and was reading 12.2 at the battery.  For a "plug and play" advertised kit thats not very plug and play but alas.  My question is , am I missing something ? Ive been reading that some people recommend upgrading the stock 80 amp alternator fuse to a 140 amp but I dont see how that would stop the alternator charging especially at idle not under load.  Regardless ive pulled it out and am going to get it bench tested by an auto elec tomorrow but it would be handy to know if ive missed something silly or have done something wrong.
    • My wild guess is that you have popped off an intake pipe....check all of the hoses between the turbo and the throttle for splits or loose clamps.
