Tried them on RB's? :ermm:

To get to a 90dB limit for the EPA, a resonator will not get you over the line - that was more the point i was trying to make. So a rephrase of my statement if i may :)

Also remember 2.5" will flow any reasonable amount of power as well (2.5" is not a friend of a modified turbo setup).

Ok if your only chasing 200rwkw, but if you are looking to 250-300rwkw and beyond you are in a very big pickle on PULP.

edit: (talking about a system you can run daily, not swap out for EPA only)

Tried resonators on RB's? Yep. Rb's are great, because they are easier to shut up due to the smaller cylinder capacity (SR20 = 500cc per cylinder, RB26 = 433cc per cylinder, therefore pulses are less in amplitude. A resonator will get you over the line, but it depends on the outer diameter, the packing/hole size and the length. Have a look at the "Helmholtz resonator" and how they work. It's an excellent method of removing exhaust energy with minimal restriction to the exhaust system. Some work and some don't. It depends on the quality and if the exhaust shop knows what they are doing.

The fitment of a quality resonator WILL lower your sound output on your car with minimal restriction. Fitment of an absorption muffler is a larger resonator. Fitment of a reflective muffler will lower your sound even more, but will provide more back pressure.

For the SR20, the fitment of the resonator that I made was a permanent fixture. I value my and others hearing.

Hey guys,

Got defected last night for:

-Manual Boost Controller in engine bay

- HID headlights with 'no washers.'

The cop was a prick, "I wont defect you for the air pods."

Me "Because they're legal mate."

I think he is right with the boost controller and HID's but?

Sigh.

Are they china HID's?

Id imagine so, so yes, they are. Philips i think is legal, but they are expensive hence no-one has them which is kinda silly given the price neutrals the defects

Yeah they are some Chinese brand.

I didn't even know about the Philips ones.

Also manual boost controller....not rw?

i thought hids were legal but legal limit was 6000 or 8000k??? i think 6000k.

btw got rwc & cleared defect on friday arbo..feels good to be back in the 33.

just got epa to worry about..only due end of august though.

n thanks to everyone for the advice.

Yeah they are some Chinese brand.

I didn't even know about the Philips ones.

Also manual boost controller....not rw?

Any after market boost controller is illegal. If cops see something that is a different colour, or something that doesn't look 'factory' it's game over. So either put it back to factory, or hide it and hide it well.

The reason an aftermarket boost controller is illegal is because it changes the 'factory' emissions.

Maybe when you got the rwc they didnt look for or find the hid ballasts or anything. Any HID is illegal if it does not have auto-leveling or a water jet cleaner for the headlight lense.

Currently any HID is illegal if it is aftermarket and not complianced as factory with the car. You cannot fit HID's to your car without them being factory fitted to your model. The reasoning behind this is because you are not in a position to interpret the ADR requirements whereas the automotive engineer/car designers are.

  • 2 weeks later...

okay just paid epa fine arghhhh $584.what a waste.

but still got to fix exhaust. spoke to a exhaust place and they said something about making a flange or something and quieting it down for $150. Was just wondering if i decide to leave this in would it effect performance or anything?? and if i take it out and get caught again will i have to pay another $584? otherwise i may aswel try and find a quieter muffler and do it properly.

or i was thinking of borrowing & putting a stock 33 exhaust back on to pass epa until i know what im going to do about the exhaust.

i have a silencer at home which i could just have welded on but it sounds all sh*% with them lol.

yeah it will benefit me in the long run to do it properly, and that goes for everything and any problem anyone has i guess.

probably just going to get rid of the cannon and put twin pipe muffler on it. just need to find one that still sounds nice but not to loud.

guy i spoke to from dandy exhaust reccomended a magna flow one so ima go down n check it out.

looking at either this u3_11.jpg

mp01(1).jpg

or theres these for $65??? not too sure on them though

What is the current exhaust setup?

To get past the EPA you'll need more than just a rear muffler (& cat).

You'll need a nice sized mid muffler too, infact the mid one is more important as it'll be larger than the rear one

(if memory serves me correct you can fit a larger one in the middle on the R33s)

Ye, one muffler isn't going to get you over the line, i was in a similar predicament and i'm not N/A!

I honestly feel you are gouing to need two very decent mufflers to pass the EPA.

You dont have a turbo to knock out some of the noise which is not helping.

Any by decent i mean more much than a $65 muffler :(

Go down and have a chat to a local exhaust place, there are a few good places Vic people use (if you have a search)

Just do what i did Beau, My exhaust system is a full 3 inch with only a cat and muffler. When i get epad i have a custom pea shooter rear muffler which i chuck on which goes down to 2 and a 1/4 inch. Passed EPA with the full turboback 3 inch to that muffler, with only a cat and got 87db.

Know you have passed it now but me spending $150 on that muffler saved me 3 times already :D

You do know they have now started taking photo's of just about everyone?

That trick wont work forever, recently a few people have been slapped with some fairly hefty fines i've heard around the traps.

Being they have been busted swapping mufflers over and so on.

Now more than ever, do it right

When i went to get the epa done they only took pics of my engine bay and cooler.

Technically on paper my exhaust system looks the same with the pea shooter and with the cannon. Thing is i can always say i had the small muffler on when caught, thats if the cop doesnt take a pic of it on the spot. They cant prove it.

    • What bedding in procedure did you use?   When you say stutter, what exactly do you mean? Like it feels like someone letting go of the brakes momentarily and regrabbing them again to get you to stop? Re-reading your post, and that is what it kind of makes me think you're explaining, like theres a little bit of a jolt, likely just as you're reaching a stop. I've only had this issue once. And if its caused by what caused mine, you will want to get the car up on stands again and check it over. Mine was a case of a caliper mounting bolt coming out and letting the caliper rotate on the other remaining bolt and gave play in a wheel as it came to a stop. But not every stop either!
    • Yeop... binned it   This will be a summary will not many pics atm and cbf  Fixed the samsonas - it was totally munched Put a new precision 7675 T4 on with proper split pulse mani Got to Sydney to get to car - drove to canberra to get racecar - drive back to sydney that night Next day all day at Plasmaman putting on new clamps cleaning some things up and adding another large engine oil cooler sitting at the rear above diffuser to keep things cooler Next day - Tuesday - on Dyno - killer wikid awesome pumped out really good numbers - more mid range and on lower boost levels Wednesday - first prac - all day again getting the suspension right - had to borrow front suspension again - out do a lap come in - out do a lap - in - what i had just couldnt handle the load at the more consistent higher speeds - got a lap in at the end of the day that was pretty reasonable  Put it this way that lap wouldve had me in 4th in Pro am for the whole event - with only 700 hp and used tyres Thurs first official prac day - lap out warm up - then entered a hotlap with above setting and 80% effort took corners 1,2,3 and into 4 car felt awesome -  rear came around out of nowhere bang into the wall near front on at whatever 140 kmph Done, over, gone Just one of those how did that happen apparently as all indications show nothing out of the ordinary Got to spend the rest of the time at the event like I hadnt done before - was actually Ok mainly as I had my family and my boy is 9 and got treated like a rockstar Long trip home, lost a trailer wheel in nowhere land, X5 airbag suspension gave up half way across nullabour and rode on bumps stops (its now completely fine) had to do a 19 hr drive day on day 3 as accommodation got screwed up so just had to keep driving till found a town with some Now to reassess - hopefully the motor and other things are OK but yet to be seen too. There is no easy fix there is no i'll just order that part and get it sent - we'll have a talk to people see what can happen and what the go is but at minimum its rebuild from scratch struts forward and alot of time effort and $ should and if I return and if but maybe/ when  I have the cage tied into the front strut towers - if I didnt have that things couldnt been worse you can say its just a front end but if you know what goes into these cars... you'll know what that actually means in reality   Car was very fast. Disappointing we just didnt get to show it Effort doesnt win you races though     Apparently this is motorsport !
    • Thanks, will do that.  Thankfully they still feel great.
    • Yeah man, absolutely. You can try pushing me all the way in swapping the R34 for an E9x M3
    • It's almost certainly going to be some amount of pads compound transfer onto the rotors. It will probably go away after you've run them for a bit. If not, pull it all out, lightly sand the rotors, scuff the pads, and rebed.
