Yes i realise this - but as i said, just once you get pinned and it's all over really.

The EPA aren't idiots, they know probably 95% of people are putting a massively restrictive muffler/baffle onto their exhausts etc etc.

So it's only a matter of time before they clamp down on that as well.

I think so far in this car i have been epad 3 times. 1 full test and 2 noise tests. The guy i know that does the EPA noise test puts that i have a mid muffler on the diagram so the epa dont bother me about it later.

But on a different question here, what is the distinct line between a defect and an epa?

E.g. On a defect notice they will write that a atmo bov is a defect on the vehicle... but it technically is an EPA issue. I was under the impression that a defect is given for a car that is un road worthy. Why do they pick up things that have to do with EPA and put it on a defect??

Just an update, got my defect cleared the other week, took the RWC to Vicroads and they just cleared it.

I thought that they inspect the vehicle for major defects, but they did not. Too easy.

quick query. i own a 94 32gtr and i recently recieved my first full EPA notice, however;

when the police officers pulled me over and found out that it was a "GTR skyline" according to the coppa, he told me my pods were illegal, even though they are dry pods. my intercooler is illegal, even though it is an R33 GTR intercooler (steel end tanks rather than plastic on the 32s) and my bovs were illegal. He also pointed out that my exhaust was rather loud (which it is, fair enough).

So now I have to go get the test even though the legislation clearly states 2 of my intake modifications are legal? So if I put a stock exhaust or have my current one modified to suit and put stock recirculation valves in I should pass?

How is it though the cops can report you to the EPA for modifications that they say are legal? I rang the EPA and they listed the modifications recorded which were;

aftermarket pods

aftermarket intercooler

aftermarket bovs

and aftermarket exhaust.

Is there anyway in the future if I am pulled over of informing the police, shy of pulling out the GTR service manual, that my modifications are indeed legal.

any help greatly appreciated guys

regards,

Gabbo

Police can report you for EPA regardless of whether or not you are actually in violation. They don't care, there is no punishment/reprimand system in place etc etc.

So they can report you for anything based on suspicion, not fact.

That's how the law is, so they get away with it.

I will take the next cop that reports me to court, im sick of it :D

Has anyone ever thought about legal action against the police for continual harrasment? or a group action against the police for continual harrasment? its a pretty well known fact the import scene is targeted over say the v8 scene. i wonder if the xr6turbo forums have a threat purely devoted to EPA dramas.

anyway, got any advice for us dude, your help would be really appreciated

Im running out of ideas to get air into my standard airbox as i cant fit the snorkle in due to fmic piping. Getting a vented cf bonnet which will have a air intake feed for a pod. Was wondering if its classified as a "intake mod" if i cut a hole in the top of the standard airbox and fill it up with thin mesh so that the air can get in from the top?

Cheers

Change the FMIC piping. Keep the snorkel.

Cheers.

according to a previous post, modifying the stock air box is considered an intake mod.

not sure what your car looks like but if it draws attention from the average person, than that's a start. change the car to looks more stock like, have an exhaust closer to the 90db limit, have a pumped back BOV ect.

other than those ideas, you are outta luck unless you move suburbs or change the areas you drive through.

just to let you boys know, its possible to pass a full EPA with a full turbo back 3" system. I JUST DID! @86db.

i have a 3" Xforce cat, middle muffler and rear Fujitsubo Jasma muffler - all 3" piping. - i also passed my 180sx with full 3" system from turbo until rear muffler- rear muffler was 3" to 2" especially made up to be like stock. @87db.

....this might help people save money n time :)

86db exhaust on the stagea is legal too... Racepace do 3.5" legal systems, that flow rather well from what has been said by members on this board...

Keep snorkel same, when modifying FMIC piping I wonder if changing the pipe off the TB to tight bend would be argued to be a separate mod, or part of the FMIC+piping mod :)

Got full epa from pettet, yay! Have a 3" kaikimoto system wif a high flow catco cat. Now i know the exhaust is "Jasma"approved which means 92dba Yes? Which i can swap out for something i get made up. I was just wondering about the emissions. Do i have to worry about my FMIC? Will that play with the emissions? and BTW its a return style so wont get dicked for that

    • My idle is set at 950rpm though - Moving the timing around 20 degrees is not really what I'd call a calm idle. That said... neither is chop, by definition. The LS ECU likes to adjust timing to hold idle as opposed to air. It'd work, but generally speaking there'd be a discrepancy in the base idle and the IACV would want to move the timing around anyway to maintain said idle. I think I'm just going to keep the timing steady anyway. Preserve my engine mounts.  My aircon is now officially regassed. As the guy was reversing I noticed my reverse lights do not operate, along with my reverse cam. This is a bit distressing, because 100% of guides talk about which wire to connect to backup cams as "the goes with the [other color] wire". Often when doing conversions. Unfortunately the R34 colour wires aren't documented Unfortunately I had a T56 Magnum gearbox with it's reverse switch, which also isn't documented. Unfortunately there's definitely not documentation for people with both of these in the one car. Unfortunately I forgot. After many hours of this, I have a reverse cam and reverse lights again. The wire going through the trans tunnel to the reverse switch had broken. Upon inspection, it looks like this one wire had about 7 spade terminals and extensions in it.. for reasons I cannot possibly comprehend. I also spent the 750 hours required to clean up the wiring behind my head unit which now looks like this: This is a monumental improvement relative to what used to be there WRT triple gauges, head unit, traction control, wideband controller, and whatever the f**k OEM stuff still exists there in various states of connectivity/needed. Next step is to check in at the Exhaust shop to see/confirm how much clearance I have, to decide what mid mufflers or 'resonators' (which are just straight through, narrower mufflers) I can add and hopefully cut out a lot of exhaust leaks, pinhole, v-band or otherwise. But first step will be to 'take a look' before the next step.
    • Fark the AFM card and Nistune, Haltech Nexus S3, DBW, cruise control, flex fuel, dis dat.
    • It's most likely the bolt/bush where the cover bolts back wore and allowed cover to move forward.
    • Still haven't put the injectors and R35 AFM in so we can tune the bloody thing for the HG highflow it got mid last year! I think I can forecast the upgrade path to a bigger twin scroll, external gate, Haltech, flex setup, Samsonas, dis dat, etc will be .... a while away!
    • Should have taken that opportunity to slot in a twin scroll turbo setup. Maybe next time.
