Just curious as a fairly reasonable offer has come my way.

What are your experiences with this turbo on 25 ?

i can guess at what rpm range it kicked in by the size of the thing, but when did it spool on your application ? what relevant mods did you have that may have increased / decreased this over stock internals + cam gears assuming split front dump and complete 3" exh?

sizing for my application it is a little large (increasing lag understandably) with a target of a max 250, 220-250 is my goal which is well short of the power claims by garret.

Is the version of the turbo released on the ford the same as sold by garret literally ? steel wheels etc double bb cartridge ? same as the GT3540 aka GT35R from garret ??

apparently they are t3 flanged (i haven't seen the thing and personally inspected yet but soon) which would suit my exhuast, are certainly large enough for my application. assuming mod's to the exhaust manifold anything else req changing bar water an oil lines ?

how hard was it to source an appropriate exhaust mani or was it all custom ?

Im having a hard time with searching at the moment on the turbo of the ba/bf xr6's i keep getting hte damed car specs an i want the compressors specs... driving me mad...

You'll be looking at it coming on hard close to 4.5-5k.

You can buy the .63 int gate housing from garrett but they are worth around $500. So s/h xr6t turbo for 1k + 500.. Your really better off buying a newy for a couple hundred more.

Its a very large turbo for your goals. Don't do it. :D

Interestingly enough the new internally gated GT3582 from garrett has a bit of a donkey. Aparently the design doesnt flow the gasses well enough to efficiently get them out of the wastegate hole. This is from one report from a close friend. I say go external gate .63 (You can get these IIRC) and be a man :huh:

Not sure about the .63 but the GT3540 .82 internal gate flows plenty well. Dangerman4 pushes 24psi through his gt3540r .82 IW using a pfc ebc on the same dyno I run on. No spike, no drop; holds boost ruler flat.

So definitely not a donkey.

I do suspect the .63 with the IW may have issues as the smaller the turbine housing you go the larger the wastegate required. BUT, thats only speculation.

Its also interesting to note garrett have revised their IW housings since making the ford version. The new non-ford IW garrett housings completely seperate the exh gas from the wastegate and overall it is slightly better designed. I haven't measured both wastegate flaps so I can't comment on any size differences.

Yeah wheezy i know the car you are talking about the car had uncontrollable boost spiking and creep due to bad flow throught the wastegate, whilst modding this to a bigger hole would have fixed the issue is was beside the point. The turbo was reccommended by a garrett distributor to a reputable workshop as a bolt-on (ish) low mount upgrade for R33... it was not and hence they returned it and supplied at gt35 which has since been high mounted and externally gated.....once bitten twice shy.

How was the dump designed (split or open bell mouth)?

Exhaust manifold?

Interesting one car has perfect boost control yet another doesn't.

Initially dangerman4 did have issues with boost tailing off which was related to another tuners lack of experience with the pfc ebc.

If you only want up to 250rwkws, get a HKS2535 or a highflow

Couldnt agree more. Nail on the head.

A 600-700hp turbo is far to big for 250rwkw.

Your better off with a high flow that sits 450hp or so.

Blistering response, massive mid range... it'll be a true street weapon that will provide more than enough fun

Here is my dyno using a HKS GT-RS 400hp turbo (Slide has an equivalent turbo for much cheaper).

Ignore the red line as the graph is a comparison from an exhaust change. The blue line was my final result with the new exhaust, but i still think there is more in it (mainly mid-range) as i currently still run a "truck core" fmic.

My engine had other mods, but i think 250rwkw is definately acheivable on a std RB25 ;)

easily i know of at least 4 that have been running over 300rwkw for 2years.

i will be installing a gt3540r .84 rear, on my r33 gtst soonish, so i will be able to give some more info as to how it goes.

My previous turbo was a r33 hiflow plain bearing, on 18psi made 237rwkw, so the gt3540r im guessin is going to be fun haha. could possibly run into a tree, but i will let ya know when i head out.

i have on the car at the moment:

PFC

AVCR

FMIC

Walbro fuel pump, fuel reg, 555cc inj

Z32 afm

pod filter

so i'll see how it goes, i know it will be laggy, but shit when it hits 4400rpm, wooohooo shake and bake.

I am considering cams later on, if my car doesnt blow in the meantime, but if it does blow then obviously a whole heap of other stuff.

let yas know what happens.

Q1: Would that turbo (the HKS2535) be suitable with stock internals if pushing for between 260kw and 280kw? Or is that about the time you start thinking of strengthening the motor (RB25neo here).

Q2: How much would the HKS turbo (and fitted) set one back? approximate figure is ok...

hks 2535 no good for 260 to 280 2835 or 3037 and higher in hks better brand plus turbos in that brand are well known in the 2500 and up bracket turbo alone then the lines well est 300 depends what and where you get, custom dump well another 600 for a good split dump/front pipe, fitted that can vary as well pends if you do it yourself, oh and the neo not sure on manifold setup theres the estimate for you

does anyone know what are the flanges on the xr6 turbo?

my mate has a dying bearing in his r33 and get get a brand new xr6 turbo from ford for $900 and is looking at doing that, but we are just trying to find out what flanges they are. i said he should go a slide highflow but it appears as if slide isn't making them anymore.

    • Seat of the pants assessment of the new intake: The car is way less "doughy" when hitting the loud pedal, especially off idle when stopped or in traffic, I did use a cheapo lazer thermal thingo to measure the temp around where the pod filter got its air, it was between 55 - 60°C, in saying this the car was shut off and not moving, so the OEM intake pipe was not supplying any fresh air to where the pod was when the car was at least moving A weird bonus was induction noise on the throttle in the cabin increased a bit,  I was worried that I was actually going to lose some of that induction noise I love so much, outside though, when I got the daughter to do a WOT drive by pass for me, the induction noise has increased alot when on the throttle, not quite ITB doort, but well up there I'm extremely happy with the results and have been exploring the country roads in the region  As for house mods: 1.New front fence is up and is awesome, it really upgraded how the joint looks from the street, and the added security is nice 2. Electricians have replace some interior lights, and with more lighting in the garage, a few new motion detecting lights out the front above the garage, front room, and at the front door, which I have already found heaps helpful coming and going, also now has fancy pants CCTV all round the house The only hold point for power though is the solar and batteries due to supply issues, although this will happen over the next few weeks 3. I have done a heap of landscaping out the front and I'm almost ready to do a new small retaining wall with some nice blocks to replace the brick and cemented in rocks around the raised garden beds cemented in river stone "was the fashion at the time" the house was built. I currently have a pallet of retaining wall blocks and 2 bulka bags of 20mm blue metal to replace the wood chip that is in the raised garden beds around the house 4. I now have 3 big raised garden beds for out the back to grow some vegetables, about 70cm high, 200cm long and 100cm wide 5. My 2 compost bins are already pretty full with brown, green and kitchen waste from the landscaping I'vedone so far, but they will probably take a few months to break down, so anything else that gets chopped, trimmed, and kitchen waste will just start filling the base of the raised garden beds to about 30cm before I start throwing 40cm of good compost, and stuff, for the vegetables to grow in, I'll need a few ton of compost and soil, but the local supplier can sent me bulka bags of the stuff Basically the logs, wood chips and a few strategically placed rocks for drainage, will give the beds some good organic materials down low to break down over time, and they will hold moisture during the warmer months to save the water in my big arse water tank if we don't get alot of rain So, all in all, the car and house mods are going well, and I'm really enjoying being retired, I sleep in too 0700 and slowly plod around inside until I feel like actually doing anything, and only work in the yard for as long as want, which has actually been alot over the last few weeks,  although when you look at it, it seems that not a huge amount of work has been done,  until I look at the before I started the work pics Happy days and good times indeed 
    • hahaha yeah. Plan is to get side skirts and probably just rear pods. But going to do them one-by-one. I've got a set that I really like from RHDJapen, but that one isn't shipped to AU. So need to find someone who can get it for me
    • Here's an idea, answer the questions I asked you as they are trying to work out WHY the LSD will be binding up in a straight line.
    • You haven't driven many modern cars then have you? Most of them have sfa steering feel with their stupid electric bullshit steering systems.
