sup vic ppls,

apparently someone on the forums was/is a good contact for shannon's insurance? I'm with shannons at the moment, but i rang just cars for a laugh, and they ended up being $500 cheaper. I know the Shannons policy is better, but $500 is a big difference.

i'm up for renewal, and just wondering if i could possibly speak to this contact. I know some people here have gone through this person. A vic member has pointed me in a direction for someone to pm, but i've had no response.

cheers,

daniel

Yeah I saw the add in a free mag. I had a feeling that this would be the case and they'd be a massive rip off. Still I'll give them a call and see how they can jerk me round too

GIO = rip off

$3386.21

R34 GTT, 23, clean record

it's like the early days of Just Cars  - although just cars are stupidly cheap now, just that the excess's and choice of repairer options are shit

ryno insurance was even cheaper or the same price thereabouts for both the 180 and R32 and appear to have the same benefits as shannons.. eg agreed value, 14days car hire, lifetime guarantee on repairs, choice of repairer, pay by the month.

Just Cars don't even have choice of repairer and only 3 yrs guarantee on repairs etc... even if Matt from Shannons can't match that $500.. if something happens you might end up having to take your car to Dodgy McShoddy to get it fixed, and not very well.

We'll probably change to Ryno but not until we get the protected rating from shannons, which you get after 2? yrs with no claims. Otherwise we have to serve the same periods again.

They have online quotes too.

The only thing is that I don't know anyone who has made a claim through Ryno yet, so I don't know how hard that is or if they screw you around etc.

Anyway hope that helps :P

~Kaz

cheers Kaz :)

yeah i have written Just Cars off. the piece of mind you get with Shannons far outweights the $500, but it did beg the question if i could get a cheaper premium though.

I rang Vigil, who are very similar to Shannons, agreed value, lifetime guarantee, choice of repairer, etc... it was about $1380.

That's the the thing, i'm not too keen on signing up with someone if no-one has claimed before. Shannons i have no dramas what-so-ever, but some of these newer companies, i'm a little more hesistant.

I gave famous a call, but they tried to call back at a bad time, so i'll see how they go as well.

I'm in the same boat. I'm 23 soon, and need to renew on the 180. My JCI premium renewal for the next year is $1460, so I want to see if Shannons can match that (considering I hardly drive the car anymore). Plus, like you said, the choice of repairer is something I'd prefer to have control over.

might suit you as Shannons has like a "usage" feature. I'm on limited usage as i don't drive the car every day, but there is an extreme limited use policy, might be good for you.

Vigil has something similar i think.

Ryno is no go as you have to have owned a hi-performance car before. That's the first time i've ever heard something like that, but it does make sense.

i know Shannos has an extreme low use policy, which seems like would be what you're after. I *think* Vigil has something as well.

Should be cheaper than J.C., you can pay by the month, and no extra cost. And your repair options are infinitely better. worth a bit extra

  • 1 month later...

Apologies for digging up an old thread again, but I've tried PM'ing 8OO5TED and got no reply. I've tried twice now.

I've also PM'ed GTRSOUL (Chris).

So do we have a shannons contact?

Has Matt (8OO5TED) or Chris (GTRSOUL) helped anyone recently?

Oh, and yes I have read through the entire insurance thread. I've got a nice large list of insurance companies I need to try and contact soon though :P

Was in a similar boat to you. I have PM'd Matt and this is the first time he hasnt replied to me. I ended up calling and the policy had gone up by $200 which I wasnt happy about (no claims, convictions, rating 1 protected etc). Apparently the car had forced it up. They then put our other car on this policy which was supposed to have happened when we insured it back in November. That made a significant saving off setting the increase on the Evo.

As a result the Evo has been reinsured with them but it made life so much easier with Matt.

i got a cheaper quote with Vigil (very similar type of company to shannon's, also based in Melb), but a few little better things with shannon's such as agreed value. So i told shannon's i had a better quote, and the guy said we can do this... and that's all we can do. He was very uninterested, not the usual enthusiast type people i usually get.

so yeah, i asked for a better price saying i had a better quote. Now on about $1390 per year.

23, no bad history, R34 GT-T.

Ryno won't insure you if you haven't owned a hi-performance car previously (makes sense)

    • Well, yes, every CU on the bus is available via the Consult port, but whether the scanner you are using is capable of talking to the TCU, the ABS/TCS modules, etc etc, is what is at question here. Many of them are only for engine codes. So, if you have one of those, you won't know if the ABS is having a bitch.
    • That's now. R chassis Skylines come from a time when the tolerance in the ADRs was a bit more....slack. My car, on 235/35-17, which is damn near the exact same size as the original 205/55-16, is pretty much bang on correct indicated speed across the whole legal range. That's demonstrated with constant speed run over 5km, and GPS speed. It's just the luck of the draw. My particular speedo head has to be the thing that is "calibrated" that way, because everything else (the diff ratio, the gearbox and the speedo drive**) are all same same as most other Skylines. **OK, so the speedo drive is a Navara unit to drive the R32's cable, not the electronic unit than an R33/4 would normally have with teh same gear on it. Otherwise, I applaud your OCD tendencies, and I would do the same if I needed to.
    • Not too sure, I believe the Nissan consult port does everything? Also just filled up the reservoir to full and the light is still on. The float seems to move up and down fine.
    • The speedo's can be very conservative, when my Mazda NC MX5 speedo is showing 118kph, the GPS, and a calibrated radar.... cop mate.....hits me at around 110kph +/- 1 or 2 kph, and that is on a 215/45 17, stock tyres size is 205/45 17 as well, so weirdly conservative with stock tyre size When my Commodore speedo red 116kph GPS had me at 110kph on 255/40 17, so again conservative Google says manufacturers need to set the speedo from 4 to 10% slower than actual road speed.....for safety.....and compliance  After doing some offset and clearance measurements to see what can fit the NC on 17x8 +40, without guard rolling or rubbing anything at my current ride height, I've decided that when my tyres are toast, I'm going to fit 225/45 17 and see where that gets me IRT actual speed of my speedo and GPS/radar From the online calculator I should be still be doing around 5kph under an actual 110kph when the speedo is showing 110kph My ADHD requires that when I'm doing 110kph on the speedo, that the actual road speed is actually really close to that, and not alot slower And going from 205 to 225 still keeps the car within the %/mm allowable in the NSW vehicle rules and regulations, which is nice, as long as I'm looking at the latest version that is.....LOL https://www.nsw.gov.au/sites/default/files/2021-02/RMS-13.464-Light-vehicle-modifications-Vehicle-Standards-Information-No-6-November-2013.pdf
    • Take the value it measured as, and pick the closest range available that is above the reading on the screen.   Also, no point just testing the coils. Read what has been said again. You need to test all your wiring, everything.
