what put me off Holdens in general was the Fattening up they did.Commodores platform in the past was always a lighter car with big engine ( Hence the success in the 80's touring cars ) But ever since VN I feel they are heading in the wrong direction so I lost interest. Why the hell are they ( And Ford ) So damn big and heavy ? Has the Australian public fattened up so much that this extra size is required ? I remember years ago people were into WB Statesmans but I always thought they are a heavy luxo cruiser..But compared to now they are not so big and heavy anymore....Listen local manufacturers....Downsize..!!

I would have thought that the kind of person who puts their family of 5 into the car then goes and does 13 sec. quarters would be the exact type of person to keep out of high performance cars.

I sorta disagree with ya on that one.Guy with family of 5 would have had his fair share of experience with horsepower and may use it more responsibly..I would feel safer on the road with that person then the P plate moron in a performance car

Come on. Be fair and think about what you are asking.

The weight comes from the climate control, power windows, trip computers, super stereos, power seats, air bags, sat nav, traction control/ABS sensors. and all the drama associated with crash testing and their ability to pass..the looms in these cars weigh a hell of a lot. Show me Audi/BMW/Mercs of similar size and interior space that are lighter? If you can find them look at the materials used such as alloy panels, alloy and other exotic suspension/sub frames etc etc. What woudl that do to the price of the average family car or the sports sedans derived from them?

The cost of designing and building a car is one thing...the cost to engineer weight out of the things is through the roof. Look at what the new R35 GTR weighs and tell me why are you not branding it as a POS heavy barge? LOL i know i am. :) Its got exotic materials used throughout and is meant to be a 2dr sports car for the global market (GMH/Ford are basically for Aus population) and yet it weighs how much?

Modern cars weigh the earth...Holden and Ford are no different to other manufacturers in this regard.

And to answer the other part of your question, the XD/XE/XF range of Falcons were handing it to the Holden as they were larger sedans with the Commodore barely bigger then the Camira etc. So when they designed the VN they upsized so that the interior/boot space was equivelant to their main competitor

I love any nice example of any car....i know there are dozens of Commodores i would kill for....fat chance that i could ever afford one of them modded the way i would like :(

I understand what you are saying regarding the equipment they come with now will increase weight some what...But I refer to the general size of the car....they are bloody enormous..!! Falcons also..Park one next to a VL or VN and you will see what I mean. Surely they could have made the physical dimensions of the car a little smaller....Not rubbishing the car at all ...local manufacturers really need to consider downsizing...A good look at Corolla sales compared to years gone by will give you some idea of where its all heading.US car manufacturers are in financial problems big time...while toyota and honda are killing in the sales...Now as for the weight of the the new GTR...yeah its heavy but I can always justify some of it on the all 4wd set up...look at the weight difference between a GTS and a GTR...quite a bit...But your right...shame it wasnt 150 kg lighter

Guess it gives something for tuning companies like Nismo and Top Secret something to make......Mmmm carbon and titanium everything.....*drool*

...shame it wasnt 150 kg lighter

LOL...i would go as far as saying 400kgs lighter :( This animal is only 990kg :)

If you want a sports car then you dont need sat nav, traction control, AWD etc etc :P If you dont find the experience of punting arond in it part of the enjoyment of owning the car.... well thats why you get a Maxima or a Commodore for the daily grind :)

its funny how people are saying how much commodores weight compared to skylines when skylines arent much lighter at all.

its funnier how people STILL dont understand that theres cars designed for different target buyers.

Oh now that you mentioned it I am now converted and absolutely totally understand now and will never EVER compare cars, which were aimed at different target buyers, together. :(

Yeap the above was sarcasm. Theres always going to be people comparing apples and oranges no matter what you or others may say... its just part of people's nature to compare one thing to another - sure one thing may not appeal to someone but will appeal to others and everyone probably, and should, know that but they still still compare it to see what interest them or just to make them feel better about the choice they make and to make them seem better than the next person's choice.

No matter what you or others say theres no stopping it! Unless one day all cars will be destroyed and replaced with some form of tube suction thing and space ships like on Futurama to get you from place to place.

Well i dont really agree with you on that one, I mean VE is now up to 1800 kg + Whats the latest sedans from japland weigh in at ? Not bagging the commo but 1800 kg is near toyota landcruiser weight...surely they must find a way to bring it back to 1500 - 1600 kg

Jap sedans are generally still smaller in size compared to our aussie barges. I know myself jumping in mums JZX90 Mark II, well it may have four doors, it hardly has the space my old VR had to chuck in 5 people, let alone throw luggage in the boot. They may be 4 door sedans, but they are still smaller in total size :)

dont u people watch the news?????? 64% percent of australians are overweight LOL. that means if u wanna load up ur car with 5 ppl the odds are 3 of em are gonna be LMAO so we need the 1800kg commodores with the 7L tubo desiel enignes to haurl all these fatties around.... if u tried squezing 5 fatties into ur skylines the doors would burst off n ud needa rev ur car two 9000 rpm n drop the clutch just to get away from the lights.........

u try sitting 5 ppl in a vl or vk its not comforatable at at all n i the 4 door skylines feel even smaller again i think.. dunno about a 2 door tho neva been in the back of 1

It's a well known fact that the japs build cars to suit their people.

the cars are smaller due to the fact that Jap men have small wangs and therefore can keep their legs closer together.

Jap women are usually skinny f*ks as well so fitting 5 japs in to a car is easy in a jap car.

in stralya (that's where we live), more than half the population are what is scientifically classified as "FATPHUCKIS MAXIMUS"

Instead of doing something about this problem, they resolve the issue with bigger motors in cars, bigger cars, relabel clothing sizes so that 110kg bushpigs can say "I'm a size 10", advertise that McDonalds Burgers are 100% lean beef, and repremand the school bully for making fun of the 10 year old boys boobies.

This is the reason for the big cars.

This is the truth.

:) Thats gold...

People in this day and age are only getting bigger. As mentioned, the early commodores aren't the most comfortable in the world. Its quite obvious that the companies that build such big cars these days aren't worries about the weight nor size of the car, as they are taking the comforts of the people buying them as a first priority. You have to remember also, most models are general company cars or the owners have bought it just because its big and it has room for the family + luggage + the dog. The engines they use are certainly big enough to push these cars around.

Mcdonalds is a good example. The sizes of their meals in the USA are huge because people demand more food. They aren't going to make the meals smaller & hope that people lose weight so that they can make smaller meals. The same thing can be said about cars. People want bigger cars as the need is for more room & luggage space. If it wasn't the case, they wouldn't go any bigger. Their sales prove there obviously isn't anything wrong with what they're doing...

Its like comparing a BMW 1200 Touring Bike to a GSXR600. The GSXR is lighter, quicker, smaller engine. Not a bad performance bike at all. The BMW sports shit loads more options & luxuries whilst being able to be a lot more comfortable on any sort of trip. The curb weight indicates you're getting a lot more bike.

Oh now that you mentioned it I am now converted and absolutely totally understand now and will never EVER compare cars, which were aimed at different target buyers, together.

As you said in your post, the only reason people do do it is so that they can feel better about themselves and what they like, without taking into account all of the other different factors that someone would have chosen the completely opposite vehicle, and then, be as happy, if not happier than the other person.

Its all about bringing the other person down & stereotyping. Calling people bogans because they drive Commodores is a perfect example of it. People just cant get on with their life and accept their are two sides to a coin...

some people in this thread have found it offensive to ascribe certain attributes to a whole race of people and have reported it to admin. this is pretty much the basis of what is known as racism. so cut it out. the next person to try and be clever and funny by bagging a whole race of people will get warning and/or temporary banning.

    • You just need to remove the compressor housing, not the entire turbo. I would not be drilling and tapping anything with the housing still on anyways.
    • So, I put my boat on a boat. First of all, I'm going to come out and say it. Why is Tasmania not considered a holy goal, an apex that all road-legal modified cars go to, to experience? This place is an absolute wonderland of titanic proportions. If people are already getting club runs for once in a lifetime 30 person cruises to Tassy then I've never seemed to see it. It is like someone replaced the entire place with an idyllic wonderland for cars, and all of the people living there with paid actors who are kind, humble, and friendly. Dear god. After doing a lap of almost all of the place I've found that it's a great way to find out all of the little things that the car isn't doing quite right and a great way to figure it all out. All in all, I drove for 4 hours a day for a week and nothing broke. I didn't even need to open the engine bay. This is by all means a great success, but it has left me with a list of things to potentially address. I also now have a 3D printed wheel fitment tool which annoyingly hasn't got any threads in it to actually assemble it. I might be able to tape it together to check the sizing I actually want to use, but it'll likely involving pulling the shocks out to properly measure travel at least at the front, and probably raise the car while I'm at it, at least in the rear. I scraped on quite a few things and I'm not sure how else to go about it. I was taking anything with a bump at what felt like 89 degree angles. And address those 10 other tasks. And wash the car. God damn it is dirty. And somehow, the weather was perfect the entire time - And because I was on the top of Mt Wellington it turns out it was very much about to freeze up there. I did something I typically never do and took some photos up there in what must have been -10 and the foggy felt like suspended ice, rather than mere fog. If you own a car in Australia, you owe it to yourself to do it.

    • Hi, I have a r32 gtr transmission. Does any of you guys have an idea how much power it will hold with the billet center plate and stock gearset? At what power level and use did yours brake with or without billet plate? Thanks, Oystein Lovik
    • Saw this replica police car based on a Mitsubishi Starion XX parked next to a 'police box' (it's literally a box) in Hirohata, Himeji City in Hyogo prefecture the other day. It's owned by Morii-san who is a local Mitsubishi Starion enthusiast. According to a local radio station blog post, he always wanted to make a police car himself based on ones he saw in his favourite Manga comics.  As it's illegal to modify a car to look like a police car and drive on the road, Morii-san tried many times to get permission from Aboshi police station headquarters nearby. They refused initially by after they got tired of that they granted him permission. However, the car can only be displayed on private property and obviously can't be registered as long as the police livery is present. The car was completed at a cost of 1.5 million yen (US$ 10,000) in addition to the car cost. A location was chosen outside Hirohata Police box where the car can easily been seen from the street. Morii-san has two other Starion road cars, both widebody GSR-VRs.
