Hi guys,

just came back from the small dyno day around my area, tried to get the AFR from this dyno .. and end up with the paper without the AFR reading.. talked to them and they said " my exhaust pipe is too big, and no pressure at the back and oxygen is cool down.. and so on..

i saw it when my car was running on the dyno and my car lean out.. that's why i need it for the retune/remap..

is this true or they dont know how to get the read out on the paper?

waste my time/money

did you pay them? I wouldn't have.

99.99% of dyno operators have an extension they can put on their Wideband pipe to make it go right up the exhaust. This actually gives more accurate readings.

But I have a 5inch cannon and never had a problem.

They obviously are tossers.

a lot of places won't give out the AFR's from on a dyno day for the simple reason that they will want you to come in and get them to tune it. if they give you the AFR's then you can go and make some alterations yourself, or take it to your local place to get it done. but if they don't give them out they have more chance of getting you back again to get the car tuned, so they get more money. they are a busniess after all.

Unique Autos didnt have any problem supplying AFR at that SAU dyno day. I dont think any shop that is confident and competent would have a problem providing it to you.

In this particular case they gave you a BS reason for not being able to supply it, so dont go back. If their true reason is that suggested by mad, they're being dishonest with you - another reason not to go back.

I'm not going back there for sure..

the reason I went there this morning because their shop is around my area and i just wanna get the AFR and power figure print out for the remapping in the future..

absolutely wasting my time and $$

I'm going to go to the SAU dyno day next month

hmm I think you might all be a bit quick to judge. big diameter exhausts and 02 sensors right at the rear are a bad mix. You need them as close to the turbos as possible, the 02 sensors up the zorst can read leaner than true due to the extra air back there.

We compared 2 properly calibrated o2 sensors, one at the exhaust, 1 at the dump pipe, and the exhaust one read leaner and responded slower to changes (about 500rpm)

Why the hell do people have to bag a workshop because of a silly thing like this ?

Seriously it drives me up the wall, you might as well bag every tuner thats ever touched a ecu if your going to be like this.

It was a dyno day man, seriously. the whole point of the day is a power read out, yes they should be giving AFR's if the customer asks for one (i have worked the computer at a few dyno days and its not hard) but sometimes your car does not give a correct reading, and the exaust being too big is a damn good reason.

Its a shame that your never going to go back there because those guys are probably really good at what they do, they just didnt want to hold up the dyno day to get you a AFR read out, its a mission to get 50 cars on the dyno in one day so you dont want to f**k around if you dont have to. car goes on, 3 runs.. thats it.

If you have a problem with your cannon being too big at the back (very very very common problem) then go to a exaust shop and ask them to install a bung before your cat and ask the tuner to tune from that point which will give you accurate readings.

Sorry for the rant but it shits me to no end when i hear tuners getting bagged out by someone who has NO idea what they are on about and they start to get a bad name because of it, yes i know the people who listen have no idea either.

But thats what makes the industry so hard for people trying to make a living out of it, they practicly have to charge through the roof just to keep the shop running.

I suggest you go back and talk to them, tell him you were not really too happy that you didnt get a AFR read out and that you have got the bung in your exaust now and ask if he can do you a good deal on a couple of runs! The guy will appreciate what your asking and probly do the runs for the same price the dyno day cost you.

Go easy on those guys, its not a easy job doing what they do, but someone has to do it.

I agree GT, its a good way to handle it, although ive run heaps of dyno days, and IMO for the $50 people pay for 15 min dyno time, they deserve the O2 to be hooked up. Sure its not exact, but all dyno shops will have a way of mounting the extended probe((which is the biggest pain with some of the cannons)

It's a dyno day, not a dyno comp.

If they can't be stuffed putting the probe up the exhaust they are being lazy. I've got a 3.5 inch exhaust with a cannon. It's never been a problem, it's never even been raised. And if they cant be stuffed putting a pipe up the exhaust can you honestly see them wanting to shimmy under the car to install the o2 sensor?

The whole point of these days for most people is that they want to know what their car is doing, whether it's afr's are safe, what boost it's actually running as opposed to what the gauge is saying, whether it's pinging.

Which raises another question. Did the operator hook up for a boost signal subie? Or was it a roll on strap down, run up, roll off. Tell me someone at least listened for knock.

Point taken on the bung duncan. I'm making a new front and dump pipe soon to suit a new setup so i may do this.

that's the point of going to the dyno day for me, i'm not after the power figure number

i've been to many dyno day with my other car (rex) they usually gave the print out between KW and Boost or KW and AFR

I think this is the 2nd time they organized the dyno day there... and i have to tell them to watch out the AFR and stop pushing my car due to the lean out!

dont think so.

well thats good, i would sugged you get the sensor bung welded in before you go to get accurate readings, they cost around $5 each or less and its about $20 to get it installed at any exaust shop, if you go into the shop and tell them what you want they will be able to order it in and fit it for you.

good luck, post the dyno sheet if you can.

just got contact from the owner of the workshop, the oxigen sensor probe shat itself partway through that day

so, he will look after me again

cheers

    • Update 3: Hi all It's been a while. Quite a lot of things happened in the meantime, among other things the car is (almost) back together and ready to be started again. Things that I fixed or changed: Full turbo removal, fitting back the OEM turbo oil hardlines. Had to do quite a bit of research and parts shopping to get every last piece that I need and make it work with the GT2860 turbos, but it does work and is not hard to do. Proves that the previous owner(s) just did not want to. While I was there I set the preload for the wastegates to 0,9bar to hopefully make it easier for the tuner to hit the 370hp I need for the legal inspections that will follow later on. Boost can always go up if necessary. Fitted a AN10 line from the catch can to the intake hose to make the catchcan and hopefully the cam covers a slight vacuum to have less restrictive oil returns from the head and not have mud build up as harshly in the lines and catch can. Removed the entire front interior just shy of the dashboard itself to clean up some of the absolutely horrendous wiring, (hopefully) fix the bumpy tacho and put in LED bulbs while I was there. Also put in bulbs where there was none before, like the airbag one. I also used that chance to remove the LED rpm gauge on the steering column, which was also wired in absolute horror show fashion. Moved the 4in1 Prosport gauge from sitting in front of the OEM oil pressure gauge to the center console vents, I used a 3D printed vent piece to hold that gauge there. The HKB steering wheel boss was likely on incorrectly as I sometimes noticed the indicator reset being uneven for left vs. right. In the meantime also installed an airbag delete resistor, as one should. Installed Cube Speed premium short shifter. Feels pretty nice, hope it'll work great too when I actually get to drive. Also put on a fancy Dragon Ball shift knob, cause why not. My buddy was kind enough to weld the rust hole in the back, it was basically rusted through in the lowermost corner of the passenger side trunk area where the wheel arch, trunk panel and rear quarter all meet. Obviously there is still a lot of crustiness in various areas but as long as it's not rusted out I'll just treat and isolate the corrosion and pretend it's not there. Also had to put down a new ground wire for the rear subframe as the original one was BARELY there. Probably a bit controversial depending on who you ask about this... but I ended up just covering the crack in the side of the engine block, the one above the oil feed, with JB Weld. I used a generous amount and roughed up the whole area with a Dremel before, so I hope this will hold the coolant where it should be for the foreseeable future. Did a cam cover gasket job as the half moons were a bit leaky, and there too one could see the people who worked on this car before me were absolute tools. The same half moons were probably used like 3 times without even cleaning the old RTV off. Dremeled out the inside of the flange where the turbine housing mates onto the exhaust manifolds so the diameter matches, as the OEM exhaust manifolds are even narrower than the turbine housings as we all know. Even if this doesn't do much, I had them out anyways, so can't harm. Ideally one would port-match both the turbo and the manifold to the gasket size but I really didn't feel up to disassembling the turbine housings. Wrapped turbo outlet dumps in heat wrap band. Will do the frontpipe again as well as now the oil leak which promted me to tear apart half the engine in the first place is hopefully fixed. Fitted an ATI super damper to get rid of the worn old harmonic balancer. Surely one of the easiest and most worth to do mods. But torquing that ARP bolt to spec was a bitch without being able to lock the flywheel. Did some minor adjustments in the ECU tables to change some things I didn't like, like the launch control that was ALWAYS active. Treated rusty spots and surface corrosion on places I could get to and on many spots under the car, not pretty or ideal but good enough for now. Removed the N1 rear spats and the carbon surrounding for the tailpipe to put them back on with new adhesive as the old one was lifting in many spots, not pretty. Took out the passenger rear lamp housing... what do you know. Amateur work screwed me again here as they were glued in hard and removing it took a lot of force, so I broke one of the housing bolts off. And when removing the adhesive from the chassis the paint came right off too. Thankfully all the damaged area won't be visible later, but whoever did the very limited bodywork on this car needs to have their limbs chopped off piece by piece.   Quite a list if I do say so myself, but a lot of time was spent just discovering new shit that is wrong with the car and finding a solution or parts to fix it. My last problem that I now have the headache of dealing with is that the exhaust studs on the turbo outlets are M10x1.25 threaded, but the previous owner already put on regular M10 nuts so the threads are... weird. I only found this out the hard way. So now I will just try if I can in any way fit the front pipe regardless, if not I'll have to redo the studs with the turbos installed. Lesson learned for the future: Redo ALL studs you put your hands on, especially if they are old and the previous owners were inept maniacs. Thanks for reading if you did, will update when the engine runs again. Hope nothing breaks or leaks and I can do a test drive.
    • No those pads are DBA too  but they have colors too. I look at the and imo the green "street" are the best.
    • I’m not sure what happened I told them about sonic tunes free OTS tune and the next the I know .. I was booted..   To funny
    • Yea - I mean I've seen my fuel pump which is decades old and uh, while I'm not saying this with real knowledge... but I sure get the ick at using anything in the fuel system that produced the state of that pump. Many years ago I went through multiple pumps (and strainers) before I dropped the tank to clean it out with extreme violence. I'm talking the car would do maybe 50km before coming to a halt, which resulted in me cleaning out the filter with some brake cleaner and going on my way. None of my stuff ever looked like what came out of your fuel tank. I don't think I'd be happy with it unless every single component was replaced (or at least checked/cleaned/confirmed to be clean here).
    • I'm not going to recommend an EBC pad. I don't like them. Just about anything else would suit me better. I've been using Intima pads for a while now.
