When balancing the crank, my machine shop drilled holes in the the counter weight rather than grinding off material as Twoogle has done. Is one way better than the other?

Gav our balancer has done both grinding and drilling. Tiny little drill marks were on most of the counterweights as well as the large ones from the factory. Grinding is generally done when material near the big end journal needs removing and drilling is done when removal of material from the counterweight has to go.

Hey Paul how do u rate the cp ring sets? i pulled my motor down after the initial dyno tune to check pistons etc and noticed a couple of the ring gaps had lined up with each other, any ideas why? i've not had any issues since reassembly but not something i want to happen if possible. I used to run Jun cosworth pistons and never had any issues, but since my bore is bigger than 87mm i cant use the jun ones anymore :D

coming along nicely.

wats your opinions on the spool rods paul?

Spool rods are manufactured by SCAT in america. SCAT have quite a good reputation as a reasonable quality product and are good value for money. In my opinion they are on par with Eagle and other rods in that price range.

Hi Paul - Just to clarify. Spool rods arent made by Scat or by the company that makes Scat rods or Eagle rods.

Not being picky - I just want that clarification made.

i think you need to clarify where they are made then...why do they use SCAT branded rod bolts??

I was more than happy to think they were made by SCAT as they have been making quality rods in USA for over 45 years and have an excellent reputation.

On your website you even use the same spiel as SCAT on your website "High tensile 4340 forged steel" "doweled cap for precision alignment" etc

When I bring the rods in they do not come with bolts. So I have to source the bolts here in Aus. I was buying bolts from Rocket for a while but they kept running out of the std ARP bolts and would supply me with the ARP 2000 bolts with SCAT on them - like you have there.

I now buy my bolts from Quantum here in Bris as they get them in from the US for me in quantity.

You can talk to Ryan at Rocket or Jason at Quantum to confirm.

All my rods now have ARP 2000 bolts with no SCAT on them.

Cheers

Scat are made in China, it is common knowledge now.

The price alone reflects where they are made.

Whether Spool or Scat are made in Taiwan , China , India , USA or Aus etc is really irrelevant. As the steel in SPOOL rods is 4340 ( had it tested several times ) the tolerances are perfect, the rod bolts are ARP and the quality is exceptional.

There are plenty of cars making power with SPOOL rods ( and the like ) and there are numerous workshops who recommend them ( talk to Mercury Motorsport, Proengines, Harris Engines, 6Boost etc ). Fitzpatrick Speedworks has a RB25 making 460 rwkw with those same SPOOL RB25 rods you have.

Ill email Scat in the US with a link to this thread. They can confirm or deny what you claim.

No doubt about the quality of the product you are selling as even the trained eye cannot pick the difference between the Spool and the Scat product. They were perfectly balanced and tolerances were exact when checked.

Thanks Paul, Im happy you like them.

I will post up some pics soon of the differences between SPOOL rods and Scat rods.

Cheers

cool...are you by any chance doing stroker cranks for anything other than RB30?

you will probably find that these rods are the same as electronics, the cheap and nasty stuff and the top of the range high quality stuff is quite possibly made by the same ppl, but some items are built to a price and others are built to a quality.

    • Thanks Duncan, that's the best info I've read. Furthermore after learning about the PCM programming side controlling the factory boost solenoid, the purpose of the solenoid is to "bleed" boost when pin 25 is earthed, thus allowing spring pressure in the wastegate actuator to overcome diaphragm boost pressure, thus closing or reducing the position of the wastegate flap creating more boost as the turbo is able to spin faster. It's pretty cool to see a designated Pill to do exactly this, would have liked to have seen it with a tiny filter over the end for those moments in vacuum.  The constant bleed pill has now been removed completely from the system and solenoid boost control has been restored once again.   Case closed 😂
    • The wideband reading is meaningless if it's not running. Why are you using shitty old sidefeeds on any engine, let alone a Neo? What manifold and fuel rail are you using to achieve that? Beyond that, can't help you with AEM stuff as I've never been their ECU/CAS combo.
    • Manual boost controllers (where a little of the boost was bled off) were quite common back in the day, because they were cheap and easy. Generally they had a manual adjustment screw rather than being fixed like yours. Down side is they always bleed boost, not just when you want them to so an electronic boost controller that uses a solenoid will have less lag.
    • Hello , im new here and i have A31 home build  RB25det neo stock eng / turbo  aem ems 2 blue connector  aem 3.5 map aem cas disk aem wideband connected to ecu  355 lph pump 550 nismo yellow injectors side feed aftermarket regulator  and won’t start with base aem tuner basic tune eventually flipped cas 180 degree so it triggers on correct stroke not in exhaust cycle  Now it won’t start Wideband reads 10 and 11 at lowest fuel setting  and will share calibrations soon for aem tuner i think something is wrong in aem tuner    please if you have any information, am very grateful
    • Legend. I ended up finding the facebook account of the owner of the first car i sent but sadly he deactivated the account. I think you’re right in saying it’s some sort of well done custom job. Really appreciate your help anyways.
