Given my car basically was a Z Tune spec wise already all I needed to do was put a kit on it.

It was going to cost me a LOT more to down-grade to an N1 than what this is (the major reason why I'm doing it since my newbness isn't going to make me all that fast straight up).

But we can be sure some Porka and EVO people are going t have a cry about it too which will be fun :banana:

I saw a genuine 400R up at auction a couple of months ago. now that would be cool for rally and the 2.8 and 400ps wouldn't hurt. it's the 33 to have. this particular one may have been a bit nice to race though. I can tell you if I'd had the money at the time I would have bought it. Grade 5A (unheard of generally for cars that old). 5,000 odd kms. would have been a nice collectors piece.

I am not 100% sure how this applies to the CAMS rally or AASA rules, but in CAMS circuit racing to enter as something the car has to be in that exact spec.

ie your chassis does not have to be a real z tune, but every part of the car has to be changed to z tune spec.

In the case of my car in circuit racing it is a 91 gtr running as a 32 Vspec2 n1 which means it must run the bigger brakes, n1 turbos, no rear wiper, factory oil cooler, aero additions (nostrils, rear lip spoiler, sidepods) etc etc. Obviously people are a little liberal with those rules (eg I have no rear wiper but not an n1 rear windscreen with no wiper hole), but in theory it should all be genuine.

Would be interesting to get confirmation from Stuart how closely this is followed in tarmac rally.

powerplay had 2 for sale a while ago. if i had the money i'd quite happly buy a 400r and gut it for racing. what's the tuning potential of a 400r? (injector size, afms, zorst...) the extra torque of the 2.8 would be good for rallys though.

Replica vehicles are required to be mechanically identical to the model they are representing aside from where the regulations lay down a tolerance for modification. There is room for movement within the tarmac rally world where the component that is wrong isn't performance enhancing and there is a plan to correct the problem if it's of significance.

Eg. I used to enter my R32 V-Spec II as an N1, but didn't put the nostrils on it cause I don't like the look of them and left my rear wiper on cause I couldn't be arsed taking it off.

Obviously the wiper and support systems weighed more than not having one and the intercooler isn't as efficient without the nostrils so logic says my car is at a mechanical disadvantage which is Ok if the organisers agree.

I can't remember exactly, but my hazy brain is telling me it was around 5m yen = $50K at the time. quite good buying for one in that original condition.

Awesome stuff, I'd love to own that. They're my favourite GT-R, next to a Z-tune of course :P

excellent...and very practical approach.

in the production car class there is a real fight against replica spec cars, and even moves to ban them every now and then (ie I would have to find an actual vspec2 n1 vin chassis). if they knew my rear window should not have a wiper hole I would be disqualified and all points forfeited. all from the falcadore boys who are upset that

a. their homolgation specials are only a little less shit house than their base models

b. a 20yo datsun can still match or even beat their 2008 spec cars

the practical approach is thanks to targa tasmania as the market leader trying to be client focused. it was a different story five years ago.

that anal approach shits me... nothing like the small minded car club approach to the world of motorsport!

four digit numbers are application numbers, they will swap to three digit once confirmed as invited entries this month.

    • My thinking is that if the O2 sensor is shot then your entire above described experience is pure placebo.
    • Here is the mess that I made. That filler there was successful in filling dents in that area. But in the middle area. I can feel dents. And I've gone ocer it multiple times with filler. And the filler is no longer there because i accidently sanded it away. I've chased my tail on this job but this is something else lol. So I'm gonna attempt filler one more time and if it doesn't work I'll just high fill primer the door and see where the issues are because guidecoat is of no use atm.
    • Ok, so I think I sort of figured out where I went wrong. So I definitely overthinked it, and I over sanded, which is probably a large part of the problem. to fix it, I ended up tapping some spots that were likely to be high, made them low, filled them in, and I tackled small sections at a time, and it feels a lot better.    I think what confused me as well is you have the bare metal, and some spots darker and some are lighter, and when I run my finger across it, it' would feel like it's a low spot, but I think it's just a transition in different texture from metal to body filler.    When your finger's sliding on the body filler, and crosses over to the bare metal, going back and forth, it feels like it's a low spot. So I kept putting filler there and sanding, but I think it was just a transition in texture, nothing to do with the low or high spot. But the panel's feels a lot better, and I'm just going to end up priming it, and then I'll block it after with guide coat.   Ended up wasting just about all of my filler on this damn door lol  
    • -10 is plenty for running to an oil cooler. When you look at oil feeds, like power steering feeds, they're much smaller, and then just a larger hose size to move volume in less pressure. No need for -12. Even on the race cars, like Duncans, and endurance cars, most of them are all running -10 and everything works perfectly fine, temps are under control, and there's no restrictions.
    • Update: O2 sensor in my downpipe turned out to be faulty when I plugged in to the Haltech software. Was getting a "open circuit" warning. Tons of carbon buildup on it, probably from when I was running rich for a while before getting it corrected. Replaced with new unit and test drove again. The shuffle still happens, albeit far less now. I am not able to replicate it as reliably and it no longer happens at the same RPM levels as before. The only time I was able to hear it was in 5th going uphill and another time in 5th where there was no noticeable incline but applying more throttle first sped it up and then cleared it. Then once in 4th when I slightly lifted the throttle going over a bump but cleared right after. My understanding is that with the O2 sensor out, the ECU relies entirely on the MAP tune and isn't able to make its small adjustments based on the sensors reading. All in all, a big improvement, though not the silver bullet. Will try validating the actuators are set up correctly, and potentially setting up shop time to tune the boost controller on closed loop rather than the open loop it is set to now. Think if it's set up on closed loop to take the O2 reading, that should deal with these last bits. Will try to update again as I go.
