Whether hung or floor mount is VERY much dependant on the vehicle, and how you sit in it mate. I'd suggest waiting until you have a seat and wheel dummied into place and then make the call.

Floor mount is usually preferable and easier to adjust and service, but, some vehicles just don't suit them, and smaller cars are usually the most challenging.

What master sizes are you after fella? Will see if I can grab an ex Supercar for you, complete with carbon foot shroud etc

Cheers Bris. I am told this is about where I will need to be. 5/8" front, 3/4" rear, 3/4" clutch.

But based on the Woo's advice I might be jumping the gun a little and might need to get the rest of the shitbox built first and leave this component till seats and tiller are all in place. Thanks for the heads up Woo. Is a component I havent dealt with before. I was scratching my head a little comparing the floor mount to the firewall style mounts. As oyu said the floor looked the easiest path for mounting, but may not suit the RX7 considering I might find myself sitting pretty hard against the floor to fit in the thing.

But Bris, I m always a sucker for a bargain. :) Let me know if you turn up anything. :)

Try not to leave it as the "last" thing to go in. They're not a simple fit, and having intrusion bars etc in the road doesn't make it easier.

With the car stripped just try and envisage where the relationship between seat/wheel/cage will be, and take it from there.

Anyone know much about pedal boxes? Am guessing a floor mounted jobbie would be the go for the RX7? My gut feel is tyhe usual spend as much as you can afford to applies as it is an area you dont want to cut corners on. Any experience appreciated.

Seems quick research reveals you can get an OBP unit from the UK for a very reasonable price although a little googling reveals they may have their shortfalls. Dont want dodgey pedal feel and performance.

Then there is tilton 600 series for reasonable money.

Tilton 900 series for more.

Then AP for crack pipe money. :)

I've had an OBP unit, and i on sold it because the qulailty just waas up to scratch, so i bought a Tilton 72-603 and it's a great piece of kit..

pedalbox's really are a get what you pay for sort of thing!!

Room is the biggest thing, they take up a lot more than you think!, i had cut the floor on my GTR to fit it in..

the only other thing is, Tilton will quote you for the box, but it doesn't come with anything, you then have to buy the throttle pivot, and the balance cable

which is another $350 ..

Thanks Woo and Jon. Great info. I was trying to get on to the seat etc early so I can mock up the cabin once the shell is stripped and tackle any additional cutting of metal or welding in any extra metal required when we do the cage so will try to get a feel for the pedal box then. If we have to do a hung one, I guess that would be the time when the dash etc is all out.

Thanks for the first hand feedback on the OBP unit Jon. I had a feeling they might have been a little flimsy and not quite up to the job but that confirms it. Had read there can be a bit of lateral flex in the pedals etc. Not ideal for something as important as brakes. :)Point taken on the Tilton as well. They dont look too badly priced until you add in the master cylinders, brake bias etc.But probabaly the best value of the decent gear. Gonna be a bit spendy but do it once do it right I guess.

Thanks again for all the input fellas.

We test fitted an AP floor mounted setup in the RX3 (that I will probably never finsh), and I just couldn't make it (and me) fit in the car, without cutting and welding the floor/firewall. Needed at least 260mm back from the pedal centreline. I noticed another rotary and a few other cars with exactly this done at High Country, but I don't think it is either legal or within the spirit of the rules..happy to be corrected if I am wrong?

I have used the Tilton firewall mount before with good results, maybe some firewall strengthening required though to stop flex. A friend fitted a "floating master cylinder" type firewall pedal box setup a few years back to an IP car. Cost over $5k from the US but gained over 1sec a lap at QLD raceway, so he was happy! Exchange rate should be better now.

There is some very useful info on pedal box setup etc on the Performance Friction website to do with angles, pivot points etc if you want to build it yourself?

Pretty much carte blanche from my reading of the rules, pedals free, with modifications permitted to be made for installation of same....limits of that work aren't defined....so go crazy with the angle grinder!

Believe bogan v8s are well entrenched in the version of IP in the west, but you'd be well advised to check out an Rx7 in that category if there's any around, it's nothing new there and might save a few pennies. The needle roller masters in some of the newer pedal boxes make the eyes water, price wise.

Smart buying got me my Tilton unit complete pretty bloody cheap..

Pedal box $620 (got the pedalbox and accl pivot through Tas performance Wharehouse down here, Luke's a top bloke..)

Accl pivot $190

Bias cable $65

Cylinder's $93ea 3 of 1x 5/8 1x3/4 and 1x11/16

and looked around at work for a fluid reservoir, so it was free!!!, some kind of old alfa thing..

Total just under $1200, plus around $300 for some new braided line's to plumb it into what i already have..$1500 is pretty cheap..

i only fitted mine to remove the ABS from my 32 GTR, and free up a heap of room in the engine bay, can actually get to my starter motor now,

it does lower the centre of gravitly...,

but if your gunna Build an RX7 it might be worth looking into swinging under dash gear, as i'm sure someone make's a bolt in kit....

Have you considered Wilwood Blaise?

I hadnt seriously looked at em. Although they always seem well priced out of the US. Will have a looksee...

Thanks Jon. It adds up but you got some keen pricing. Will have a sniff around on the IP forum too. Surely someone has crossed this bridge before. No point reinventing the wheel.

So Baw Baw sounded interesting on the weekend. Coupla casualties?? :) ABS failure??? ;) *patiently waits for the incar to be uploaded*

No offence here but seemed to be a bit of a Steven Bradbury by Sammy?? To finish first, first you must finish. Top effort!! Consistent driving all weekend while others in front faltered. Lesson in that I guess.

The important thing that came out of the weekend was that Rugby Union men are tougher then AFL. After hours of debate we cleared the living room and wrestled! Union won!

isn't that just being gay?

Was the road surface Ben, could see on the road where the inside wheel has lit up on uneven road surface and the left wheel was only semi touching the road due to a bit lip/hump in the road. :(

Car with a smaller width wouldn't have even noticed it really.

Great weekend overall though. The WRX that was leading had turbo or manifold gasket failure so unfortunate but not major in terms of damage. Then Traverso came off near the end into a tree (left hand front corner, sizeable hit) in the end section of the last session.

From a touring group point of view I had a ball. Nick was up there also (LotusGTR), had fun playing with him in his GT3 :)

Tarmac Rally is certainly more my "thing" than circuit work, bug well and truly planted.

Went through ~75-85L of fuel, great fun.

Great work from Peter, Tim & Mountain Motorsports to get it up and running. Best piece of road I've driven yet.

WOW. Goes from right to wrong in an instant. Hear what you are saying though Snowy. Setup does seem a little lively for a tarmac rally car. Lots of little slides out of corners. :) Hope the recovery today went well. Top job on the notes Bris. The car definately has pace. Look forward to seeing it back out there.

    • After my last update, I went ahead with cleaning and restoring the entire fuel system. This included removing the tank and cleaning it with the Beyond Balistics solution, power washing it multiple times, drying it thoroughly, rinsing with IPA, drying again with heat gun and compressed air. Also, cleaning out the lines, fuel rail, and replacing the fuel pump with an OEM-style one. During the cleaning process, I replaced several hoses - including the breather hose on the fuel tank, which turned out to be the cause of the earlier fuel leak. This is what the old fuel filter looked like: Fuel tank before cleaning: Dirty Fuel Tank.mp4   Fuel tank after cleaning (some staining remains): Clean Fuel Tank.mp4 Both the OEM 270cc and new DeatschWerks 550cc injectors were cleaned professionally by a shop. Before reassembling everything, I tested the fuel flow by running the pump output into a container at the fuel filter location - flow looked good. I then fitted the new fuel filter and reassembled the rest of the system. Fuel Flow Test.mp4 Test 1 - 550cc injectors Ran the new fuel pump with its supplied diagonal strainer (different from OEM’s flat strainer) and my 550cc injectors using the same resized-injector map I had successfully used before. At first, it idled roughly and stalled when I applied throttle. Checked the spark plugs and found that they were fouled with carbon (likely from the earlier overly rich running when the injectors were clogged). After cleaning the plugs, the car started fine. However, it would only idle for 30–60 seconds before stalling, and while driving it would feel like a “fuel cut” after a few seconds - though it wouldn’t fully stall. Test 2 – Strainer swap Suspecting the diagonal strainer might not be reaching the tank bottom, I swapped it for the original flat strainer and filled the tank with ~45L of fuel. The issue persisted exactly the same. Test 3 – OEM injectors To eliminate tuning variables, I reinstalled the OEM 270cc injectors and reverted to the original map. Cleaned the spark plugs again just in-case. The stalling and “fuel cut” still remained.   At this stage, I suspect an intermittent power or connection fault at the fuel pump hanger, caused during the cleaning process. This has led me to look into getting Frenchy’s fuel hanger and replacing the unit entirely. TL;DR: Cleaned and restored the fuel system (tank, lines, rail, pump). Tested 550cc injectors with the same resized-injector map as before, but the car stalls at idle and experiences what feels like “fuel cut” after a few seconds of driving. Swapped back to OEM injectors with original map to rule out tuning, but the issue persists. Now suspecting an intermittent power or connection fault at the fuel pump hanger, possibly cause by the cleaning process.
    • For race cars, this is one part where I find having the roll cage bar having gone through a hole in the floor better than the build it up on a ledge inside... The Merc I help on, the main hoop ends are marked on the car, and the jack is marked... Jack goes under a few inches and lifts one whole side of the car up... Removes that fight for long slim jacks for race car duties!   My biggest issue for the daily drivers I work on, is my jacks don't go high enough. The jacks start out on a few blocks, jack it up, then start a second jack under it on more blocks, and then I can get an axle stand under it. My axle stands are presently in use, and are nearly fully extended. The car is sitting with barely more than a cm of clearance to get the wheel off the studs! Sarah's Kluger is the same, as it has an ungodly amount of droop available in the suspension and a distinct lack of good jacking points!
    • Happy? Yep, my to do list is getting shorter and shorter. Either this light approaching is the end of the tunnel, or I'm about to be hit by a train... Ha ha ha   Also, Duncan isn't that far out of town that you need to make a multi day drive out of it. 😛
