It always comes down to your long term goals and how the individual that owns the car wants to drive it. Same goes for any modification, wheather it be turbo's, cams, ecu, exhaust. Its a balance of parts that must work together to achieve a result, and in the end its all in the hands of your tuner anyway.

Ive tuned haltech's, wolfs and FC's in a variety of cars now and they all have their pro's and cons. All ecu's have some advantage over the others. It comes down to what suits your goals and engine recipe the best, and what your tuner can produce your desired result with.

Ive yet to play with a vipec. The ecu was designed/developed by a local (Cairns) resident thats been into ecu's and turbo's for many years. They started out turbocharging landcruisers for toyota and developed toyota's sahara model. More recently was the Autronic, and they are one of the largest Garrett dealers in the country.

Right, I see.

So in Bakes situation he is going for what suites his setup, in which this case the Tech Edge is right for him...

As suggested by his tuner Red R Racing / DiRTgarage...

Cool!

Reason I ask is Iam only familiar to Japanese brand ECU as majority off the JDM car enthusiest worship the APex'i Power FC (in particular) or the HKS F-Con V-Pro or Mines etc...

But like you said they have there Pros and Cons.

Thanks GTRNUR!

Not exactly. The Power FC is so limited in what you can do. If you just have a 250rwkw - 300rwkw street car then a power fc is fine. Once you start stepping it up and push your car further then you will need to upgrade.

Yep and I dont have to drive back and forward to Sydney for tuning either. There are zero power fc tuners in Newcastle.

I tune lots of power fc's, have been for years. I was the biggest power fc supporter but i started to realise all these extra gadgets and extra options i had sitting in my car hanging off the ecu was not the best option. After getting the Vi-Pec I have never looked back.

Can you PM me your phone number Bakes? are you available tomorrow afternoon after 5? I need you to drive the car while i put a base map in it and get it ready for the Dyno because Paul will be racing at WSID.

PM sent

Right,

So your saying you would have to change the whole APex'i Power FC to a totaly different ECU all together when going above 300kW+?

My PFC ran/runs ( I sold the car) my R33 GTR perfectly with 471rwkw. I'm not saying that another ECU may not have been better, but to put a power limit on the FC seems wrong, but I'm no tuner, just a lowly end user.

Wow Bakes, I'll be watching this too, should be a great ride once it's done! :P I've always said if it had 300+kws it would be perfect....... and then i would mumble something about stealing it..... come to Auto Salon! :)

Again, I'm not a pro, but a PFC doesn't seem quite as flexible as a ViPec... I've seen both and if they cost the same price (which they nearly do) I would definately go the ViPec, it is definately a superior and more maluable ECU.

I like my PFC though, does a great job and I don't break anything by fiddling with a hundered million settings! :(

This is not an ecu debate thread...my chocolate vs dogshit call was in jest...hence the open mouthed smiley after the comment.

back on topic or you will all be banned !@*%!

    • You Gregged a whole racetrack!?
    • Look for broken wire or bad connector at the motor. Might not be it, but is worth starting there, as it is easy.
    • Hi everyone, I’m having an issue with my R32 GT-R. Sometimes, when the car goes over a bump or experiences some vibration, the 4WD warning light comes on the dashboard. When I check the code from the control unit in the trunk, it shows Code 19 – ETS Motor. However, everything seems to be working fine — if I turn off the engine and restart the car, the light goes away and everything functions normally. Has anyone experienced this before? Where should I start troubleshooting this issue? Thanks in advance!
    • I'm back from the dyno - again! I went looking for someone who knew LS's and had a roller dyno, to see how it shaped up compared to everything else and confirm the powerband really is peaking where Mr Mamo says it should. TLDR: The dyno result I got this time definitely had the shape of how it feels on the road and finally 'makes sense'. Also we had a bit more time to play with timing on the dyno, it turns out the common practice in LS is to lower the timing around peak torque and restore it to max after. So given a car was on the dyno and mostly dialled in already, it was time for tweaking. Luis at APS is definitely knowledgable when it came to this and had overlays ready to go and was happy to share. If you map out your cylinder airmass you start seeing graphs that look a LOT like the engine's torque curve. The good thing also is if you map out your timing curve when you're avoiding knock... this curve very much looks like the inverse of the airmass curve. The result? Well it's another 10.7kw/14hp kw from where I drove it in at. Pretty much everywhere, too. As to how much this car actually makes in Hub Dyno numbers, American Dyno numbers, or Mainline dyno numbers, I say I don't know and it's gone up ~25kw since I started tinkering lol. It IS interesting how the shorter ratio gears I have aren't scaled right on this dyno - 6840RPM is 199KMH, not 175KMH. I have also seen other printouts here with cars with less mods at much higher "kmh" for their RPM due Commodores having 3.45's or longer (!) rear diff ratios maxing out 4th gear which is the 1:1 gear on the T56. Does this matter? No, not really. The real answer is go to the strip and see what it traps, but: I guess I should have gone last Sunday...
